Chapter 161.
Kylie knocked twice before opening the door. She didn’t wait for Emilia to answer.
"I’m coming in."
Emilia looked up from her phone just as Kylie stepped into the room.
"You know," Emilia said, setting her phone aside, "people should wait to be invited inside."
Kylie shut the door behind her. "People don’t have your emergency contact privileges."
Emilia smiled.
Kylie crossed the room, dropping her handbag onto the chair beside the bed.
She was dressed casually, her blonde hair was pulled into a loose ponytail, and her blue eyes were still carrying the slight tiredness of someone who hadn’t gotten enough sleep.
Emilia noticed. "You look tired." she pointed out.
"You look nosy."
"I am." Emilia accepted.
Kylie climbed onto the bed without asking and stretched her legs out. She glanced toward the other side of the bed.
Three gift bags sat there.
Her eyes narrowed, and she sat upright. "What are those?"
Emilia followed her gaze. "Oh."
Kylie pointed.
Emilia looked at the bags again. "They’re from Adrian."
Kylie’s eyebrows rose. "All three?"
Emilia nodded.
Kylie stared at the bags, then at Emilia. Then back at the bags. "Your boyfriend is trying to spoil you."
Emilia laughed. "He’s always been like that."
"No." Kylie reached for the first bag. "This is not normal."
"Don’t open it."
Kylie paused. "I wasn’t going to."
"You absolutely were."
Kylie giggled. She picked up the first bag anyway. The logo caught her attention immediately.
Her eyes widened.
"Hermès?"
Emilia nodded with thinned lips. "You haven’t opened this?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I wanted to wait."
"For what?"
"I don’t know."
Kylie stared at her. "Emilia."
"What?"
"You have an unopened Hermès bag sitting casually on your bed."
"Yes."
"And you’re just sitting here." Kylie slowly placed the bag back down. "I don’t understand you."
Emilia laughed quietly. "Open it."
Kylie looked at her. "You just told me not to."
"I changed my mind."
Kylie smiled. She carefully lifted the tissue paper. Inside was a small Hermès box. She pulled it out and placed it between them.
"Okay."
Emilia leaned closer.
Kylie opened the box. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Inside was a delicate silk scarf.
It was soft and elegant, patterned with tiny stars scattered across a deep midnight-blue background.
Emilia’s expression softened. She touched the fabric. "It’s beautiful. And so soft."
Kylie looked at her. "He really likes stars." she joked, making a reference to the birthday necklace.
Emilia smiled.
Kylie gave her a look. "That’s disgustingly romantic."
Emilia laughed. "He is romantic."
Kylie picked up the scarf again. She studied the tiny stars, then she glanced at Emilia. "He knows you."
Emilia’s smile became smaller. "Yeah."
She folded the scarf carefully and placed it back into the box. Kylie reached for the second bag.
"And this?"
Emilia shrugged. "Open it."
Kylie pulled out the box. The familiar black-and-gold packaging made her eyes widen.
"No way."
Emilia blinked at her. "What?"
"YSL." She opened the box. Inside was a pair of heels, black, elegant, and simple enough to wear without looking like she’d tried too hard, but striking enough to make anyone notice.
Kylie lifted one shoe. "These are gorgeous."
Emilia smiled. "I don’t even know when I’m supposed to wear them."
"To a date." Kylie shrugged. "I’m just saying."
Emilia looked at the heels again. "Maybe."
"Definitely." Kylie placed the shoe down. "Your man has taste."
"He does." Emilia agreed.
Kylie grinned. Then she pointed at the final bag. "And that one?"
Emilia’s eyes moved to it. "That one is smaller."
"Which means it’s either jewelry or something adorable."
She pulled the final bag closer. It was smaller than the other two. The paper was a soft cream color, tied with a thin black ribbon.
Kylie looked at Emilia. "Can I?"
Emilia nodded.
Kylie opened it.
Inside was a small leather travel jewelry case. It was a deep wine color, soft and compact, with a tiny gold clasp.
Kylie opened it.
Inside were two small pieces.
A pair of tiny star-shaped earrings made of pure gold, and a delicate bracelet with a miniature silver compass charm.
Emilia’s lips parted slightly in awe.
Kylie smiled. "That’s cute."
Emilia picked up the bracelet. The compass caught the light. She turned it over. There was a tiny engraving on the back.
Kylie leaned closer. "What does it say?"
Emilia read it quietly. "A smile on your lips is my idea of luxury."
Kylie went silent. Then she looked at Emilia. "Okay."
"What?"
"That one wins." she clapped once.
Emilia smiled.
"He’s so in love with you." her eyes glistened. "I would readily give up anything to make sure this remains pure."
Emilia’s fingers closed gently around the bracelet. "No, Kylie. You are my best firend. I’m happier when you are happy. Give up nothing more for me."
Kylie smiled. She watched Emilia for a moment.
Emilia had spent months carrying fear, uncertainty, heartbreak, and the constant feeling that something could be taken from her. She watched her reduce herself just so Noah would remain.
Now, when she talked about Adrian, there was something steadier in her. Something warm.
Kylie was happy for her. Truly.
She leaned back against the headboard, and tried not to cry. One more tears, and her eyes would get irritated.
She already cried at dawn.
Emilia eventually smiled, and turned to her. "I’m going to Brazil."
Kylie’s eyes widened. "What?"
"Brazil."
"When?"
"Tomorrow."
Kylie sat up straight. "Tomorrow?"
Emilia nodded.
"For how long?"
"A week."
Kylie stared at her. She blinked twice, and then she smiled so wide. "Emilia."
"What?"
"That’s amazing."
Emilia laughed. "I thought you’d be excited."
"Excited?" Kylie grabbed her hand. "I’m already mentally packing your bag."
Emilia laughed harder. Her mouth curved i to a smile. "Are you?"
Kylie blinked. "Am I what?"
"Coming."
Kylie shrugged playfully. "Am I invited?"
Emilia smiled. "It’s Adrian."
Kylie waited.
"He wouldn’t say no to me." she urged. "Besides, you’ve always wanted to see Copacabana Beach and the Escadaria Selarón Steps."
Kylie’s expression changed. She knew that. She had talked about Brazil with Emilia more times than she could count.
Not because Brazil was some lifelong dream. But because the photographs had always fascinated her.
The bright colors, and the ocean.
Kylie looked at the gifts again, then at Emilia. She could go. She could spend a week in Brazil with her best friend.
She could walk along Copacabana, eat ridiculous amounts of food, take photographs, laugh, and forget everything else for a few days.
It sounded perfect.
Her lips parted, then something consiously stopped her.
Christian.
The thought arrived so quickly that she almost frowned at herself. She hadn’t seen him since the last time they spoke.
No.
That wasn’t entirely true. She had seen him leave. She had watched his back disappear through her doorway from the kitchen.
Kylie lowered her gaze. He was grieving, and she invited him into her house. Then, while he still grieved, she asked him to leave.
Just because she couldn’t have a simple conversation. She wasn’t entitled to him, but she felt guilt wash over her.
Kylie forced a smile. "Nah."
Emilia blinked. "What?"
"I’ll stay back."
The excitement in Emilia’s face disappeared. "Why?"
"Because you should enjoy your time with Adrian."
"You’d be coming with me." Emilia frowned. "Kylie."
"I don’t want to third wheel."
"You wouldn’t."
"I absolutely would."
"You wouldn’t, Kylie."
"Yes, I would."
Emilia shook her head. "Besides, he asked me earlier if someone else could tag along."
Kylie went still. She kept her expression neutral. "Someone else?"
"His friend." Emilia told her. "I was suprised."
Kylie’s throat tightened. She looked down at the bracelet in Emilia’s hand just to not meet Emilia’s eyes. "His friend is joining?"
"Yeah." Emilia folded her legs together. "Christian is his name."
