Chapter 155.
By ten, the first batch was in the oven.
Christian stood beside the counter, looking at the tray through the glass.
Kylie leaned against the opposite side.
Christian smiled.
He loved the sound of her laugh. He hadn’t known he would. He had never known Kylie was this funny.
He had known she was blunt. He had known she had a smile that could make him forget what he was saying.
But this was different.
He liked making her laugh. More than he probably should.
The timer went off.
Kylie jumped. "Don’t ruin this for me."
He opened the oven.
The smell immediately filled the kitchen.
Kylie inhaled. "Oh."
Christian looked at her. "Good?"
"Very."
He pulled the tray out, and they stood over it.
The cinnamon rolls were golden, and the edges slightly crisp. The centers were soft.
Kylie looked impressed despite herself. "You actually made those."
"We made them."
She glanced at him. "We." She twisted her lips. "Okay."
....
They made another batch, then another.
By two, the kitchen looked like a bakery had exploded.
Kylie had flour in her hair.
Christian had flour on his shirt.
She shook her head, and sighed softly. "Give me that." She reached for the spoon.
Christian handed it to her.
Their fingers touched.
Neither immediately pulled away.
Kylie looked at their hands, then at him. They had been in contact over a thousand times. She was always caught off guard each time.
Christian’s gaze was already on her.
The moment stretched.
She slowly took the spoon. "Thank you."
"Anytime."
She turned back to the tray. Her heart was beating faster than it should. She hated that. She hated how easily he could make her feel something without doing anything at all.
Christian stepped behind her. "That’s too much icing."
She looked over her shoulder. "You don’t know anything."
....
They ate the first cinnamon roll standing in the kitchen.
Kylie took one bite, and her eyes widened.
Christian watched her. "Well?"
She chewed slowly. Then swallowed. "That’s really good."
His face lit up. "Really?"
"Really."
"I told you." he bragged.
She took another bite, then another.
Christian watched her. "You like it."
"I do."
"More than you like me?" he asked.
She glanced at him. "Much more."
He placed a hand over his heart. "Cruel. Competing with a cinnamon roll now."
Kylie smiled. She broke off a piece of her roll. Then held it toward him. "Here."
Christian looked at it softly, then at her. "Are you feeding me?"
"Don’t make it weird."
He leaned forward, and took the piece from her fingers. His lips barely touched her fingertips.
Kylie glared at him.
Christian straightened. He chewed. "Good."
She stared at him. "You did that on purpose."
"Did what?"
"That."
"I don’t know what you’re talking about."
She pulled her hand away, and turned away from him. The remaining cinnamon rolls sat cooling on the counter.
Kylie began to pack several into a container.
Christian looked at her. "Where are those going?"
"Emilia."
"And?"
"Her mum."
"You’re sending them food?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because they don’t deserve to miss out."
Christian chuckled. "That’s sweet."
Kylie closed the container. "I’ll drop these off later."
Christian nodded. "Want me to come?"
She looked at him. "You’ve already invaded my kitchen."
"That’s not a no." he raised a teasing brow at her.
’Remain here." Kylie shook her head. "You’re very comfortable here."
"I like it here."
The words came so naturally that neither of them reacted at first. Then Kylie held his gaze.
Christian looked back. He wasn’t joking.
"You do?"
"Yeah." His eyes moved around the apartment. "It’s quiet."
Kylie nodded. "It is."
"Feels different from everywhere else."
She watched him. "Different how?"
He thought for a moment. "Like I can breathe."
Kylie’s expression softened.
She knew exactly what he meant. She had felt that way with her mother sometimes. She understood the strange relief of finding a place where you didn’t have to explain yourself.
"Thank you."
Kylie shrugged. "For the guest room?"
"For all of it."
She looked away. "You needed somewhere to stay."
"I needed more than that."
Kylie gave him a small smile, and continued parking.
......
As evening approached, the sunlight turned gold across the windows.
Kylie stood at the counter, packing the last of the cinnamon rolls after the both had eaten more than necessary.
Christian watched her from the couch.
She had changed into a loose sweater.
Her hair had fallen out of its tie, and her bangs looked so cute. She looked comfortable, beautiful, and real.
He wondered how long it would take before she realized what she did to him. Maybe she already knew.
Christian stood. He walked toward her.
Kylie watched him approach. "What?"
He stopped in front of her. "Nothing."
He reached up. There was a tiny piece of flour near her hairline. She hadn’t wiped that off.
He brushed it away.
Kylie didn’t move.
His fingers lingered for half a second, then dropped. "Better."
She swallowed. "Thanks."
He nodded. He could hear her breathing.
She could feel the warmth of him, and could smell the faint trace of cinnamon and his cologne.
He looked at her.
She looked at him.
He gave her a smile of disbelief, and shook his head.
And suddenly, Kylie laughed.
Not because anything was funny, but because she needed to breathe.
Christian laughed too. "What?"
"Nothing."
"You’re laughing."
"I know." She shook her head. "I don’t know why."
He smiled. "You don’t know what?"
"Why are you like this?" she said between her breathless laugh.
"Like what?"
"Like..." She gestured helplessly. "Like you."
He laughed. "That’s not an explanation."
He stepped closer, and she didn’t move. He made contact with her, and his hand settled gently at her waist.
Kylie’s breath caught again. Always again. She looked down briefly, then back at him.
Christian’s eyes moved over her face. "I can’t help it." he said quietly. Almost like a whisper.
Kylie swallowed. She stared at his mouth, then back at his eyes. She shook her head, as if to kill the thought. "You’re really trouble."
He smiled at her, and she returned the smile. And then, somewhere between one breath and the next, Kylie moved first.
She rose slightly onto her toes.
Her hand caught the front of his shirt, and she kissed him. It wasn’t planned. It simply happened.
Christian went still for one heartbeat.
Then his hand tightened gently at her waist, and he kissed her back softly, and slowly. He kissed her, giving her every chance to change her mind.
She didn’t.
Kylie smiled against his mouth.
The kiss broke for barely a second.
She looked at him, and then she kissed him again.
This time, Christian laughed quietly against her lips as he deepened the kiss, and pulled her close.
She laughed too. And somehow they were both smiling when they pulled apart.
Kylie rested her forehead against his. "This is a bad idea." she said with quick breaths.
Christian’s eyes remained closed. "Probably."
"We shouldn’t."
"Probably not."
She opened her eyes. "This was a good day."
Christian’s expression softened. "Yeah. It was."
He brushed his thumb lightly across her cheek. "Thank you for letting me have it." He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
Kylie closed her eyes, and accepted the little kiss. For a moment, she simply stayed there. Then she opened them.
"Don’t get comfortable."
