Chapter 122.
Emilia waited until Rowan disappeared down the hallway before she turned back toward Adrian’s bedroom.
She stood outside the door for a few seconds.
Her hand hovered over the handle. She wasn’t sure whether she should go back inside.
She had promised herself she wouldn’t force anything.
If Adrian wanted to talk, he’d talk. If he didn’t, she wouldn’t push him. However, leaving him alone when he was clearly struggling felt wrong.
So she opened the door.
Adrian looked up.
His eyes immediately found hers.
He hadn’t moved much from where she’d left him.
He was still sitting on the edge of the bed, with his elbows resting loosely against his knees, and his head slightly lowered.
Emilia stepped inside.
She closed the door behind her.
Adrian watched her without saying anything.
She walked toward the bed, then she stopped. Slowly, she took off her sneakers.
She placed them neatly beside the bed before climbing onto the mattress.
Adrian’s eyes followed her.
Emilia moved across the bed until she was lying on her side, facing him.
A small smile touched her lips. She had positioned herself directly between him and the balcony.
Whatever he had been staring at out there was no longer visible.
Only her.
Adrian looked at her for a long moment. "I didn’t know you were coming." He finally said something.
Emilia’s smile softened. "School is currently over." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "At least, I have three weeks’ break."
Adrian remained quiet.
His eyes stayed on her face.
Emilia could tell he was thinking. Maybe too much. She reached down and pulled the duvet upward, then she lifted it toward him.
"Come here."
Adrian looked at the duvet, then at her.
She held it open.
"Come here. Be my baby now."
His expression softened. He chuckled softly, and finally moved. Adrian shifted backward onto the mattress.
Emilia pulled the duvet over both of them. Then she moved closer. Just enough for their shoulders to touch.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Emilia looked at him.
Adrian was staring at the ceiling. Then his eyes shifted toward her.
"I’m sorry."
Her heart tightened. She knew exactly what he meant.
"About yesterday." His voice was low.
Emilia swallowed. "Okay."
Adrian looked at her. "I’m not asking you to forget." He gave her a small smile. "I should’ve handled it differently."
Emilia’s eyes lowered.
Silence returned.
Emilia studied his face.
There was something different about him today.
He looked as though he’d spent the entire night fighting with thoughts he hadn’t been able to put into words.
She hesitated before asking, "Do you feel this way because of yesterday?"
Adrian’s gaze moved away from hers.
For a moment, he didn’t answer. Then he exhaled deeply. "I’ll snap out of it really soon."
Emilia remained quiet.
"I just need to think." He looked back at her. "There’s a lot of things I need to figure out right now."
She watched him carefully. "What kind of things?"
Adrian’s lips parted, then closed again.
He didn’t seem ready to explain.
Emilia didn’t push. Instead, she reached toward him. Her fingers slipped into his hand beneath the duvet.
Adrian looked down at their joined hands.
She gave his fingers a small squeeze. "You don’t have to tell me everything."
His eyes lifted.
"But you don’t have to lay here alone either."
He looked away.
Emilia smiled faintly. "I’m not going to interrogate you, and I’m not going to tell you to cheer up."
A faint smile appeared across his lips.
Emilia shrugged, thinking deeply. "I hate when people tell me to cheer up."
Adrian looked at her. "You’ve never struck me as someone who listens when people tell you what to do." He teased.
Emilia gasped quietly. "Are you insulting me?"
"No."
She pointed at him, narrowing her eyes. "You definitely are. You’re lucky you’re sick."
"I’m not sick."
Emilia smiled. "Fine."
Adrian stared at her. Then, unexpectedly, he reached toward her. His arm slipped around her waist, and he pulled her against him.
Emilia’s smile softened.
She didn’t resist. She settled against his chest, and Adrian wrapped both arms around her.
His chin rested lightly against the top of her head.
For a while, neither of them said anything.
Emilia rested her hand against his chest. She could feel his heartbeat beneath her palm.
She closed her eyes. "I still have to go home tomorrow."
Adrian hummed.
"To my mum."
He chuckled softly.
"I miss her." Emilia tilted her head upward. She searched his eyes, and then rested her cheek against his chest again. "I haven’t seen her properly in a while."
Emilia smiled. "I’ll come back."
Adrian’s arms tightened slightly around her. "Your mum has a warm smile."
She watched his face. "You’ll be okay while I’m gone?"
His eyes held hers. "I’m always fine, Emilia. This is nothing."
"That’s not what I asked."
He gave a quiet chuckle. "I’ll be okay."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Emilia smiled. She settled back against him.
After a few moments, Adrian spoke. "I need to visit Sophie tomorrow too."
Emilia looked up. "Sophie?"
"My mother."
"Oh." She said quietly.
He paused. "I’ll probably go with you after visiting Sophie.."
Emilia’s eyebrows lifted. "You’re coming with me?" She stared at him. "I thought you had work."
"I can rearrange it."
Emilia smiled. She watched him carefully. "Is she still going to the appointment?"
Adrian nodded. "She has another appointment tomorrow." His voice became quieter.
Emilia’s smile faded. She shifted slightly closer. "How is she?"
Adrian looked toward the ceiling. "Some days are better than others."
Emilia didn’t respond.
He stared past her for a moment. His fingers moved slowly through her hair. "I don’t like seeing her like this."
Emilia’s hand moved across his chest.
"I can deal with almost anything." His voice was quiet. "Business. People trying to hurt me. People trying to betray me."
He paused. "But that..." His eyes lowered. "I don’t know what to do with that."
Emilia listened.
Adrian gave a small, humorless laugh. "All this money." He looked down at his hands. "All these companies." His jaw tightened. "All these connections."
He looked toward the ceiling again. "And I can’t save her."
Emilia’s eyes softened. "Adrian."
He shook his head. "Money can buy the best doctors." His voice remained painfully calm. "It can get her treatment. It can get her into hospitals that would take years for someone else to reach."
He swallowed.
"But I can’t walk into a room and buy the disease out of her body."
Emilia remained silent.
"I hate that." His eyes became distant. "I hate that there’s something I can’t control."
She understood then.
Emilia slowly lifted herself onto one elbow.
Adrian looked at her.
She reached up and touched his cheek.
He stared at her.
"Sometimes loving someone means staying."
His eyes softened.
"You don’t have to fix everything."
Adrian said nothing.
Emilia smiled gently, and added. "You can just be her son."
His hand came around the back of her neck. He pulled her down against his chest again.
Emilia settled into him.
For several seconds, he simply held her. Then his lips touched the top of her head. He gave her a quiet kiss.
"You’re too good to me."
She smiled against his shirt, and wrapped her arms around him. "I’m just here."
Adrian closed his eyes. After a moment, Adrian’s fingers found hers beneath the duvet.
He intertwined them. "Thank you for coming back."
Her eyes closed. "I didn’t come back for you."
His eyebrow lifted.
"I came because Rowan needed her books."
"Of course." He chuckled.
"And because I wanted to make sure you were okay."
"That’s contradictory."
She smiled. "Don’t ruin the moment."
Adrian’s smile returned. "Yes, ma’am."
Emilia squeezed his hand. Her other hand moved to his hair, as her fingers moved slowly through his hair.
Adrian shut his eyes slowly.
Emilia stayed beside him for another few moments. Then, suddenly, she pushed herself upright.
Adrian opened his eyes. "What?"
She smiled. "Come on."
She reached for his hand and gently pulled him up.
Adrian followed, though his expression became increasingly confused as she guided him toward the middle of the mattress.
Emilia climbed to her feet. She tugged lightly on his hand until he stood with her.
Adrian looked down at the bed beneath his feet, then at her. "I don’t stand on my bed, Emilia."
She chuckled. "Of course, you don’t."
She stepped closer, still holding his hand. "But can you let this slide?" Her eyes softened. "Just this once?"
Adrian stared at her. For a second, he looked like he was about to refuse. Then he sighed. "Just this once."
Emilia’s smile widened. "Thank you."
She moved closer until there was barely any space between them. Then she placed his hands gently around her waist.
Adrian looked at her. "What are we doing?" he asked softly.
"We’re dancing."
He glanced around the room. "Without music?"
She nodded. "Without music." A small smile touched her lips. "We should use our heartbeat."
Adrian went completely still.
His eyes searched hers.
Emilia lifted her hands and rested them lightly against his shoulders. "Listen." She smiled. "Listen to me."
For a moment, he didn’t understand. Then he felt it. He felt her soft steady heartbeat. Close beneath his hand.
Adrian’s gaze lowered briefly, then he pulled her a little closer.
His own heartbeat had changed.
Emilia noticed.
Her smile softened. "See?"
He looked back into her eyes, and held her gaze with his smoldering ones. "I hear it."
She began to move slowly. It was barely more than a gentle sway.
Adrian followed.
Emilia rested her cheek against his chest while Adrian lowered his chin onto her hair. His arms tightened around her.
A strange feeling he had been feeling for days now became frighteningly clear. He didn’t want this moment to end.
He didn’t want to return to a life where she wasn’t beside him. He wanted her laughter in his home, and he needed her voice in his mornings.
He needed her ridiculous little demands. Her fingers running through his hair, and her warmth against his chest.
He needed all of it.
Adrian closed his eyes. He held her a little tighter.
