Chapter 278: Ascending Wangyue Tower
In the winter, Xixiang City was famous for its snowscapes.
Especially on the mountains, where from a distance, the snow-laden pines created a vision of pure white, a world draped in silver.
Wangyue Tower was located within a scenic area, but it was currently closed to the public.
The Chu Family was holding a conference here to recruit agents, so only top-tier tycoons and a few Martial Arts Families were allowed entry.
At this time, a considerable number of cars were driving up the mountain.
A lot of people got out of these cars, all dressed in a bizarre variety of outfits.
Some wore tunic suits, others wore Western suits and ties, and many were dressed in traditional Tang-style jackets. A lot of them also carried long cases or what looked like sword boxes.
Clearly, these were weapons.
Their attire and the items they carried drew plenty of curious stares—and who wouldn’t be intrigued?
Anyone who didn’t know better might have thought some kind of festival was about to take place.
It took Chu Feng a good two hours to drive from Zhongnan City to Xixiang City.
They eventually arrived at the foot of the mountain where Wangyue Tower was situated.
At the entrance to the mountain path, there was a checkpoint guarded by Chu Family disciples to prevent outsiders from entering.
In fact, this entire scenic area was Chu Family territory—one of their properties.
But after so many years in seclusion, the Chu Family had actually become quite poor. After all, they had a large number of disciples to support, and Cultivation Resources were incredibly expensive.
It had gotten to the point where many Chu Family disciples started farming their own food just to save money.
"Do we park the car here?" Chu Feng asked.
Chu He and a few others were in the car with him.
The three of them had hitched a ride on the way over.
Chu Feng had ended up chauffeuring the three of them, much to his exasperation.
"Young Master Chu Feng, this car of yours is amazing! It’s so comfortable, and it drives like a beast!" one of the young men from the Chu Family said with a delighted expression.
They were practically drooling over Chu Feng’s car, clearly infatuated with it.
In truth, if the Chu Family hadn’t spent the last several decades in seclusion, it would have been nothing for disciples like them to own several cars each.
So, for these guys to be envious of a mere car just showed how pathetic their situation had become.
"Don’t worry," Chu Feng said. "Once we’ve recruited the agents, you’ll all be rich."
"Yeah! When we’re rich, I’m definitely going to buy a car just like Young Master Chu Feng’s!" a Chu Family disciple declared.
Just then, the Chu Family disciples guarding the checkpoint at the base of the mountain hurried over to greet them.
"Uncle Chu He! Young Master Chu Feng!" a few Chu Family disciples called out, hurrying over.
After all, Chu Feng was the man of the hour today; their own Ancestor had given them special instructions regarding him.
"Yes. I’m taking your Young Master up the mountain," Chu He said. "How have things been the last few days?"
"There are a lot of people," one of the disciples replied. "Representatives from all the major families are here, as well as some of the reclusive Sects. It’s crowded."
"Good, I understand. You two, stay sharp. Guard this place well and make sure there are no incidents," Chu He instructed.
"Yes!"
The disciples at the checkpoint weren’t very old. They were quite young, probably only in their early twenties.
After all, this was the first time in their lives they had ventured out into the world like this, and they were thrilled to see so many people.
Further up the mountain, there were several more checkpoints, each requiring identity verification.
This was to prevent any unauthorized individuals from showing up.
"Our own people," Chu He said.
Wangyue Tower was part of Xixiang City’s most famous scenic area. The mountain was seventeen or eighteen hundred meters high, and it would take several hours to reach the summit on foot.
The area at the summit was relatively flat and had numerous buildings.
Wangyue Tower was originally built as a tourist attraction, so it had a full range of amenities. The surrounding scenery was beautiful.
Every winter, many people, drawn by its reputation, would come here to admire the unique winter vistas.
Chu Feng and Su Miaoke walked slowly up the stone steps toward the summit.
The scenery along the way was stunning, with everything draped in a blanket of silver-white snow.
From time to time, they would pass people from other Martial Arts Clans.
"These people must have way too much time on their hands," Chu Feng grumbled. "Aren’t we just here to recruit agents? Did they really have to hold it all the way up here? Isn’t it exhausting?"
"Young Master, this is for security and secrecy," Chu He explained. "Ordinary people won’t know what’s happening up here on the summit. This helps us avoid disturbances from the secular world. Many families choose to hold their major conferences in remote places like famous mountains, far from the public eye."
"So what if ordinary people see it? Is all this really necessary?" Chu Feng asked.
"Young Master, you don’t understand. These are the rules we’ve followed for many years. It’s always been done this way," Chu He said.
"What? So you all think you’re some kind of transcendent masters, above the rest of the world?" Chu Feng said with a laugh.
’In truth, he could understand their reasoning. After all, there was a considerable gap between the members of a Martial Arts Family and ordinary people. They were simply too strong.’
’If Martial Arts Families were allowed to freely integrate into the secular world, all sorts of incidents could easily occur.’
