Chapter 104: Fastening Screws on the Assembly Line
Hearing this, Su Jun was stunned. It hit him hard.
"What happened to him later?" Su Jun asked.
"Later, there was an accident at the construction site. He fell to his death," Chu Feng said.
Hearing this outcome, Su Jun was stunned for a good while.
Su Miaoke sighed when she heard the story.
"Compared to what he went through, what are your little problems?" Su Miaoke said.
Su Jun lowered his head in silence. After the stir-fried pork over rice was served, he kept his head down and began to eat.
He secretly swore to himself, ’I have to find a job. After all, I’ve already said I would.’
This was the worst meal Su Jun felt he had ever eaten. It wasn’t that the food tasted bad, but his mood made it hard to swallow.
After the meal, the three of them continued their job search.
Chu Feng took Su Jun to some industrial parks. Beihai City’s industry was well-developed, so many industrial parks had job openings.
The notice boards outside company gates were covered in recruitment ads.
The three of them looked at the postings as they walked.
"General laborer, monthly salary 4,000-6,000, three rotating shifts, 8 hours per shift, room and board included, the more you work the more you earn."
"Office clerk, monthly salary 3,000-5,000, 2 days off per month, meals provided but not housing..."
Seeing these job postings, Su Jun rejected them without a second thought.
’Are these even jobs?’
"Brother-in-law, are these really jobs? These fucking capitalists don’t even treat people like human beings! They wouldn’t even work an ox this hard! Only three to four thousand a month? Screw that." Su Jun cursed out loud when he saw the companies’ job postings.
In truth, some general laborer jobs had decent pay, reaching seven or eight thousand, but the hours were just too long.
"You think jobs are that easy to find? In this day and age, you’re lucky to have a job at all," Chu Feng said.
"These clerk jobs, why is the salary so low? Not even five thousand," Su Jun complained.
"An office clerk in a factory—how high did you think the salary would be? You’d be lucky to get it. With your personality, you’d probably get fired after a few days as a clerk," Su Miaoke mocked.
"I suggest you pick one with higher pay. You could try being a general laborer. After all, some of them can make seven or eight thousand a month," Chu Feng said.
Su Jun thought for a moment, then nodded.
"Fine, a general laborer then," Su Jun said helplessly.
He didn’t really have a choice. He’d been looking all day and hadn’t found a single job that satisfied him.
Even when he tried to be a security guard, they said he wasn’t qualified—he didn’t have the height or the build.
Other skilled trades or jobs requiring a degree were all out of his reach. After looking around, being a general laborer was the only suitable option left.
"Alright, I’ll go with you. I don’t have anything going on anyway, so I’ll work with you for a while," Chu Feng said.
The truth was, he was mainly afraid Su Jun would cause trouble even as a general laborer, so he wanted to keep an eye on him.
"Okay, Brother-in-law, you can’t go back on your word. If you’re there, I won’t be scared. I’ve never been a general laborer before, so I’m a little afraid," Su Jun said.
Su Jun had been coddled since he was a child and had never suffered a day in his life. How could he possibly do this kind of work?
"As for being a general laborer, it’s one word: tiring! The hours are long. With overtime, you’re looking at thirteen or fourteen hours. Sometimes fifteen or sixteen hours is normal," Chu Feng said.
"Alright, it’s a deal then," Su Jun said with a nod.
"Now that’s more like it." Seeing that Su Jun had agreed, Su Miaoke’s expression softened slightly.
Then, the three of them went home.
By the time they got home, Su Jun felt like his legs were about to break. He flopped onto the sofa and groaned.
Chu Feng’s mother-in-law saw this and her brows furrowed, her heart aching for him.
"Jun-jun, Xiao Feng, Miaoke, how did the job hunt go today?" Chu Feng’s mother-in-law asked.
"Mom, don’t even bring it up. Just thinking about it fills me with rage. Those bastards at the recruitment agencies were infuriating. They said I was from some diploma mill and wasn’t qualified at all. It pisses me off so much!" Su Jun grew angry just thinking about it.
"Of course companies are looking for highly educated talent. Who would want a low-skilled person with a poor education like you? According to our own company’s hiring requirements, you wouldn’t even get in the door," Su Miaoke shot back immediately.
"Dad, is what Sis just said true?" Su Jun asked, looking at his father.
"Nonsense. Your sister was putting it mildly. With your education, you don’t even have the basic qualifications. The company’s HR department wouldn’t give you a second glance," Su Linsheng said dismissively.
"So? Do you finally see what you’re really worth?" Su Linsheng asked again.
"Is education the only standard for measuring ability? Ability is more important than education! Why do you guys only care about degrees?" Su Jun retorted, completely unconvinced.
"Who said education is useless? Not having a sufficient education shows you don’t have enough self-awareness or a solid knowledge base. All the major companies now want highly educated talent, not some unskilled person with no degree!" Su Linsheng said bluntly.
"Ugh, forget it. I can’t win against you guys. I found a job as a general laborer, working on the line in a factory. My monthly salary will definitely be over five thousand. Just you wait and see!" Su Jun said.
"With your education, working on an assembly line is about all you can do. If we put you in the company, you’d probably run it into the ground," Su Linsheng scoffed.
Although he doted on his son, the Su Jun of today was truly a lost cause.
"Hmph, so what if I’m working on the line? My salary will definitely be over five thousand. Once I get paid, we’ll see who dares to look down on me then," Su Jun said.
"Oh, Jun-jun, you can do it! Mommy believes in you," Chu Feng’s mother-in-law encouraged from the side.
"Sure. If you can last until payday, come to the company. I’ll arrange a salary for you. I’ll give you a hundred thousand a month," Su Miaoke said with a smile.
Her smile was filled with mockery.
It was obvious Su Miaoke didn’t believe for a second that Su Jun could last a month working on a factory line.
"You! Just you wait!" Su Jun said through gritted teeth.
He refused to believe it. It was just over a month. He could definitely stick it out. He would endure until payday no matter what, just to prove his sister wrong.
Chu Feng sat to the side, shaking his head helplessly. ’With Su Jun’s personality,’ he thought, ’lasting a month on an assembly line will be a real challenge.’
Given the intensity of the labor, Su Jun probably wouldn’t even last half a day.
After eating and drinking their fill at his in-laws’ house, Chu Feng and Su Miaoke left.
"Honey, want to bet my brother will be whining tomorrow that he’s quitting?" Su Miaoke asked.
"It’s hard to say. Maybe he’ll actually stick with it," Chu Feng said.
