Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 106: The Hood Falls

The illusion shattered all at once, Mira’s face and Hale’s desperate shouting and the collapsing gate all dissolving back into darkness before resolving, sudden and disorienting, back into the real battlefield.

Julian staggered, vision swimming, the crushing weight of the entity’s presence still pressing down heavy around him, though something in its posture had shifted, subtle and strange.

*bored,* the entity said, and the word carried none of the cold satisfaction Julian expected, just something flat and almost disappointed, like a puzzle solved too quickly to properly enjoy. *most break long before that point. you didn’t.*

Julian forced himself upright despite his legs threatening to buckle entirely, exhaustion tearing through every limb, reserves scraped down to something dangerously close to empty.

*you passed,* the entity said, drawing back slowly, formless edges rippling like smoke finally dispersing on some unseen wind. *this time. but understand, legend — this was only the beginning. I will return. and next time, I will not be nearly so gentle.*

The horde surrounding the frozen battlefield stirred all at once, gray heads snapping back into motion, and the vast, ancient presence simply dissolved, folding itself away into nothing with the same impossible ease it had arrived, the entire remaining horde following in its wake, streaming back north in eerie, coordinated silence, leaving the battlefield deathly, disbelieving quiet in its absence.

Julian stood there a moment longer, breath heaving, the fan finally slipping from his trembling fingers to clatter against the ground.

"I did it," he breathed, voice cracking with disbelief and exhaustion both. "I actually—"

His knees gave out entirely. He didn’t hit the ground. Arms caught him instead, fast and desperate, and Julian’s vision swam too badly to properly register whose grip had closed around him, only that it felt steady, and strong, and achingly familiar in a way that cut straight through the exhaustion dragging him under.

"I’ve got you," Reid’s voice said, rough with something raw and urgent. "I’ve got you, easy—"

The hood, already loosened from hours of combat and the illusion’s violent toll, finally slipped free entirely as Julian’s head tipped back against Reid’s arm, dark hair damp with sweat, exhausted features settling back into their true, unmistakable shape.

Silence crashed over the battlefield. Reid’s whole body went rigid, staring down at the face he’d carried in his memory for weeks, the face he’d promised himself, alone in an empty war room, that he’d find no matter what it cost.

"Julian," he breathed, voice breaking entirely on the name.

Jayden’s blade clattered from his hand, forgotten entirely, disbelief and raw, overwhelming shock crashing across his exhausted features. "that’s— it’s actually him. it’s actually—"

Logan pushed through the stunned, frozen crowd of Sentinels, breath catching hard in his throat the moment he saw Julian’s face clearly, exhaustion and grief and desperate, aching hope all colliding at once. "Julian," he said, voice cracking. "god, it’s really you."

Julian’s eyes fluttered, barely conscious, exhaustion pulling hard at every fragment of awareness he had left. "Reid," he managed, voice thin and rough. "you’re— you’re really here."

"I’m here," Reid said, voice shaking, holding him carefully, protectively, like something too precious and fragile to risk losing again after everything. "I’m here, I’ve got you, you’re safe now—"

The captain of the Elite Academy stared at the scene unfolding in front of him, disbelief plain across his exhausted features. "that’s the missing Guide," he said slowly. "the SSS-Rank. the one the entire search effort’s been mobilized for."

"Yep that’s him," Jayden confirmed, voice thick with emotion, crouching down beside Reid, hand hovering uncertainly near Julian’s shoulder like he didn’t quite trust himself to touch him yet, like some part of him still feared this might dissolve the same way the entity’s illusions had. "Julian. we found him."

Word rippled outward fast through the exhausted, battle-worn ranks, disbelief and relief and fierce, overwhelming joy spreading in waves across the battlefield as the news carried further and further — the missing Guide, found, alive, the mysterious stranger who’d single-handedly turned the tide of the capital’s defense revealed as the very person half the Empire had spent weeks searching for.

"someone get a healer," Reid barked, voice sharp with urgency despite the emotion still cracking through it. "now. his reserves are completely depleted, he needs immediate care—"

Healers rushed forward through the parting crowd, and Reid reluctantly, carefully passed Julian into their waiting hands, though he stayed close, refusing to let more than a few inches of distance settle between them even as the medical team began their careful assessment.

Julian’s eyes cracked open again, hazy and unfocused, finding Reid’s face hovering close above him. "the entity," he managed, voice barely above a whisper. "it said it’ll come back. said this was just the beginning."

"we’ll deal with that when it comes," Reid said, voice firm despite the fresh alarm the words sent through him. "right now, you just need to rest. you’ve done enough. more than enough."

"Mira," Julian murmured, something distant and raw crossing his exhausted features, the illusion’s grief still clearly lingering close beneath the surface. "it used Mira. and Hale. it tried to break me with them—"

"it didn’t work," Jayden said firmly, gripping his hand tight. "whatever it tried, it didn’t work. you’re here. you’re safe. that’s what matters right now."

Logan knelt beside them, exhaustion and grief and desperate relief all warring plainly across his face. "I have so much I need to say to you," he said quietly. "so much I’ve wanted to say for weeks. but it can wait. it can all wait until you’re properly rested."

Julian’s eyes drifted toward him, something faint and exhausted flickering behind the pain. "Logan," he murmured. "you’re here too."

"we’re all here," Logan said, voice thick. "everyone. we never stopped looking. not once."

Julian’s eyes slipped shut again, exhaustion finally, completely overwhelming him, and the healers worked fast and careful, stabilizing him with practiced urgency as Reid, Jayden, and Logan remained close, none of them willing to step back even an inch, weeks of grief and desperate hope finally, fully crashing into overwhelming, disbelieving relief.

"get word to the Emperor," Reid ordered, voice rough but steady despite everything. "immediately. tell him—" his voice caught, something raw and overwhelmed finally breaking through his careful composure. "tell him we found Julian. tell him he’s alive."

The messenger sprinted off without hesitation, and Reid remained kneeling beside Julian’s stretcher as the healers prepared to move him, one hand still resting protective and steady against his shoulder, refusing to let go even for a moment.

"you’re safe now," Reid murmured, quiet enough that only Julian, barely conscious, might have heard it at all. "whatever that thing wants, whatever comes next — you’re not facing it alone again. not ever again."
