Chapter 98: Fading

Far beyond the collapsing territory, in the vast, formless space between worlds, the entity finally stirred fully awake.

*it is time,* it thought, something that might have been anticipation rippling cold and ancient through its awareness. *time to meet him properly.*

It had watched long enough. Watched Xavier’s desperate possession, Ian’s careful calculation, watched the legend it had sensed weeks ago grow sharper and more dangerous with every passing day of captivity, resistance, and quiet, patient defiance. It had tested him indirectly — the mist, the collapsing structures, the chaos unleashed across an entire territory — and found, with something close to satisfaction, that he had not simply survived it. He had transformed because of it.

*enough waiting,* it thought. *let us see what you truly are.*

---

Xavier staggered mid-strike, the rogue he’d been fighting forgotten entirely as something vast and cold pulled sharp and sudden at the very core of him, like a hand closing around something he hadn’t realized was tethered so precariously in the first place.

"Ian," he gasped, catching himself against the corridor wall, strength draining from his limbs in a way that had nothing to do with exhaustion or injury. "something’s wrong—"

Ian staggered too, several feet away, his usual flat composure cracking wide open into something raw and frightened. "I feel it," he said, voice tight. "it’s— it’s pulling something from us. drawing on us directly."

The corridor around them seemed to dim, the corrupted residents still fleeing past them flickering strange and unstable, several stumbling and collapsing entirely as though whatever force sustained them had suddenly, violently thinned.

"it’s using us," Xavier said, horror dawning cold and absolute through the weakness spreading fast through his body. "using our own connection to it, to power whatever it’s doing right now."

"it warned us," Ian said, forcing himself upright despite the visible effort it cost him, jaw tight with grim, dawning understanding. "it said it would decide what he’s worth in its own time. I believe that time has arrived."

Xavier’s knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself hard against the wall, staring down at his own trembling hands with something close to genuine terror. "we’re fading," he said, voice cracking. "Ian, we’re actually fading—"

"not fully," Ian said, though his own voice carried none of its usual certainty. "diminished. weakened. it’s drawing enough of our shared power to focus its attention elsewhere, without fully unmaking either of us. that restraint alone tells me it hasn’t decided we’re expendable yet."

"yet," Xavier repeated bitterly, forcing himself to stand fully despite the hollow, draining weakness still pulling at every limb. "that word’s doing a lot of work right now."

Around them, the territory’s chaos took on a new, more desperate edge, corrupted residents everywhere stumbling and faltering as the same draining weakness spread outward from whatever the entity had begun doing, the entire population that Xavier and Ian had spent years carefully building now flickering and thinning like candle flames caught in a wind neither brother could see or stop.

"the horde," Ian said suddenly, some old, sharp focus cutting through his own weakness. "look."

Xavier followed his gaze toward the nearest breach in the territory’s crumbling outer wall, and felt fresh horror crash through him at what he saw. Gray shapes, dozens of them, then hundreds, began moving in slow, coordinated unison, no longer scattered and chaotic the way the entity’s earlier mist-driven rage had left them, but organized now, purposeful, streaming steadily southward in a single, relentless tide.

"where are they going," Xavier breathed, though some cold, sinking certainty had already begun answering the question before he finished asking it.

"south," Ian said grimly. "toward the capital."

"it’s not just testing Julian anymore," Xavier said, horror crawling cold through his chest despite the weakness still dragging at every limb. "it’s moving against the entire Empire. using us, using every creature we’ve ever converted, as its instrument."

"we built an army it never had to lift a single hand to command," Ian said quietly, something bitter and broken finally cracking through his usual flat composure. "and now it’s simply taking that army for itself, the same way it’s taking whatever strength it needs from us directly."

The two brothers stood together amid the crumbling wreckage of everything they’d spent years building, watching their carefully consolidated territory dissolve into raw, controlled chaos, the horde streaming steadily south toward a capital that had no idea, yet, exactly what was about to descend upon it.

"we have to warn them," Xavier said suddenly, something desperate and unexpected cutting through his own weakness and fear.

Ian turned toward him sharply. "warn who. the same Empire we’ve spent years fighting against? the same Sentinels we’ve killed by the dozen?"

"the same Empire Julian’s been trying to protect this entire time," Xavier said, voice hardening despite the exhaustion dragging at every word. "whatever we are, whatever we’ve done — if that thing succeeds in whatever it’s planning, it won’t stop with the capital. it’ll keep expanding, keep consuming, the same way it’s already draining us right now just to fuel its next move. and eventually, it’ll decide neither of us matter at all anymore either."

Ian was silent for a long moment, weighing the impossible calculation with the same careful precision he applied to everything, even now, even weakened and afraid in a way he’d clearly never expected to feel again.

"if we warn them," Ian said slowly, "we risk everything we’ve spent years building. our territory. our forces. whatever remains of our own survival, assuming it doesn’t finish us off directly for the betrayal."

"we’re already losing everything," Xavier said quietly. "right now. in real time. I’d rather lose it trying to stop something worse than lose it doing nothing at all."

Something shifted behind Ian’s exhausted, flat expression, old grief and old fear both finally, fully surfacing after years of careful, methodical suppression. "our parents tried to fight it," he said quietly. "and failed."

"then we do better," Xavier said, voice hardening with fierce, desperate resolve. "we’re not helpless children anymore, Ian. whatever it’s made us, whatever it’s taken from us — we’re not what we were that night. we might actually stand a chance at stopping this, if we try."

Ian studied his brother for a long, silent moment, something old and complicated passing between them, weeks of friction and rivalry and fear all finally, fully settling into something closer to the bond they’d shared before either of them had ever become what they now were.

"then we try," Ian said finally, voice quiet but resolute. "together."

---

Far to the south, the horde’s steady, relentless advance carried on unabated, gray shapes streaming across open countryside with terrifying, coordinated purpose, drawing steadily closer to a capital already stretched thin defending against everything it had already faced.

The entity, distant and formless, watched the horde’s advance with cold, patient satisfaction, its attention already turning elsewhere, toward the crumbling territory where a man wearing an unfamiliar face moved swift and lethal through chaos of its own making, cutting a determined path toward freedom he had no idea was about to collide, catastrophically, with everything else now converging on the world around him.

*soon,* it thought, ancient and unhurried even as everything else rushed toward its own devastating momentum. *soon, Julian. let us finally meet properly.*
