Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 96: Too Many

Xavier’s whole body went rigid the moment the distant crash reached him, stone grinding against stone somewhere deep within the territory, a section of the northern wing collapsing in a cloud of dust and debris visible even from where he stood battling the spreading mist’s chaos.

"that’s near his room," Xavier said, voice cracking with sudden, sharp terror. "Ian, that’s—"

"I know," Ian said, already turning, his usual flat composure cracking wide open for the first time since the entity’s warning. "move. now."

They tried. A wave of rogues, corrupted fresh and violent by the entity’s mist, surged into the corridor between them and the northern wing, gray shapes shrieking and clawing with none of the coherent, controllable behavior their creations usually displayed. Xavier cut through the first three without slowing, but more kept pouring in from every side passage, the entity’s direct influence overriding whatever careful control the brothers had once held over their territory’s population.

"there’s too many," Xavier snarled, driving his fist through another attacker’s skull, gray blood spraying across his sleeve. "Ian, we need another route—"

"there isn’t one," Ian said, blade flashing as he cut down two more, breathing hard for the first time in longer than Xavier could remember seeing from his usually unshakeable brother. "it’s flooding every corridor between us and him deliberately. this isn’t chaos, Xavier. this is containment."

The word landed like a physical blow. "it’s keeping us away from him on purpose," Xavier said, horror and fury tangling together as he fought forward another few feet, only to be forced back by a fresh surge of shrieking, hungry bodies. "it’s using our own creations to keep us from reaching him."

"then we cut through faster," Ian said, though even his usually certain voice carried a thin, unfamiliar edge of desperation now.

They fought forward together, brutal and coordinated in a way that mirrored their earlier battlefield efficiency, but for every rogue they cut down, two more seemed to pour in from side passages and collapsed doorways, an endless, relentless tide that no amount of skill alone could fully overcome.

"the northern wing’s still collapsing," Xavier said, chest heaving, watching another section crumble in the distance, dust billowing thick and choking through the corridor ahead. "if he’s still in there when it fully comes down—"

"he won’t be," Ian said, cutting down another attacker with brutal precision, though something in his voice carried more hope than certainty. "if my theory is correct about what he actually is, he has more capability than either of us have given him credit for. trust that, if nothing else, right now."

Xavier didn’t answer, too consumed with fighting forward another desperate few feet, fear for Julian’s safety burning hotter and more consuming than any fear he’d felt even for himself since the entity’s cold, ancient voice had first curled through his private chamber.

Back at the academy, the mobilization Reid had called for arrived in staggered, exhausted waves throughout the afternoon, Guides and Sentinels pouring in from every corner of the Empire, drawn by the emergency summons and the sheer, undeniable scale of the crisis unfolding across the capital.

"formation groups, report to your assigned district leads," a captain shouted across the crowded courtyard, directing streams of newly arrived personnel toward waiting squad leaders. "Guides to the medical staging area first, we need triage before deployment—"

Among the chaos, a contingent of Sentinels from the eastern provinces marched in tight, disciplined formation, weapons already drawn, faces set with the grim determination of people who’d traveled hard and fast the moment word of the crisis reached them. A cluster of Guides followed close behind, satchels heavy with medical supplies, murmuring quiet, focused strategy among themselves as they moved.

Reid met the new arrivals at the courtyard’s edge, exhaustion carved deep into every line of his face after hours of continuous, brutal fighting, though something in his posture straightened with grim relief at the sight of reinforcements finally arriving in real numbers.

"Commander Calloway," the eastern captain said, saluting sharply. "provincial forces reporting as ordered. where do you need us."

"the merchant quarter’s barely holding," Reid said, already turning to point toward the smoke-hazed skyline in the distance. "civilians are still trapped in several buildings there, and the defensive line’s stretched thin trying to hold the perimeter while managing evacuation at the same time. I need your Sentinels reinforcing that line immediately, and your Guides working triage behind it."

"understood," the captain said, already relaying orders to his assembled formation, the disciplined ranks breaking into fast, coordinated motion toward their assigned district.

Jayden staggered in from the opposite direction moments later, blood-streaked and exhausted, gold light flickering low and unsteady around his knuckles after hours of continuous combat. "the palace grounds are holding," he reported, voice rough. "barely. Logan’s coordinating the defense there now, but we lost another six Sentinels in the last hour alone."

Reid’s jaw tightened at the number, grief and grim, exhausted determination warring visibly across his scarred features. "we’re stabilizing," he said. "slowly. with these reinforcements, we might actually be able to hold the line properly instead of just barely surviving each new wave."

"might," Jayden repeated, exhaustion bleeding through the single word.

A young Guide broke away from the newly arrived formation, hurrying toward Reid with a hastily scrawled report clutched tight in one hand. "Commander," she said, breathless, "word from the eastern watchtower — the source of the incursion seems to be intensifying rather than stabilizing. whatever’s causing this, it’s not slowing down."

Reid took the report, scanning it fast, jaw tightening further with every line. "then we don’t slow down either," he said, voice hard with renewed, exhausted resolve. "get every fresh squad rotated into active defense the moment they’re briefed. we hold this capital no matter how long it takes, or how many waves keep coming."

The courtyard around them continued its controlled, urgent chaos, newly arrived reinforcements sorting fast into formations, Guides setting up triage stations with practiced efficiency, exhausted veterans briefing fresh arrivals on exactly what horrors waited beyond the academy’s walls.

Reid stood at the center of it all, coordinating the defense with grim, unwavering focus, though somewhere beneath the exhaustion and duty, a quiet, aching thought kept surfacing no matter how hard he tried to bury it beneath the crisis demanding every ounce of his attention.

’Julian,’ he thought, watching another wave of reinforcements march out toward the burning districts, ’wherever you are right now — please, just hold on a little longer. we’re coming. I swear it. we just need to survive this first.’

He didn’t know, coordinating the capital’s desperate, grinding defense against an entity’s overwhelming assault, that hundreds of miles away, in a territory being torn apart by that same ancient power, Julian had already stopped waiting entirely, and was, for the first time since this entire nightmare began, fighting his own way free.
