Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 86: The Real King

Mika’s POV

Mika’s dreams had grown increasingly elaborate over the past week, spun from equal parts wishful thinking and stubborn, willful denial.

In this one, Logan knelt before him in the middle of the academy’s grand hall, tears streaming down his face, voice cracking with desperate sincerity. "I was such a fool, Mika," dream-Logan said, gripping his hands tight, the whole hall gone silent and reverent around them. "I never should have let you go. Julian was never anything more than a distraction. you’re the one I’ve always wanted. I see that now."

Dream-Mika, magnanimous in victory, allowed himself to be pulled into an embrace, Logan’s mouth finding his in a kiss so tender it made the entire hall around them erupt into applause, nobles and Sentinels alike rising to their feet.

"I want to have children with you," dream-Logan murmured against his lips. "two of them, at least. we’ll name the first one after your mother, and raise them somewhere far from all this chaos, just the three of us. four of us, eventually."

Mika woke with a soft, satisfied sigh, blinking up at his ornate bedroom ceiling, the fading warmth of the dream still clinging pleasant and comfortable to his chest.

’soon,’ he thought, stretching lazily beneath his silk sheets, sunlight filtering warm through gauzy curtains his family’s wealth had ensured were the finest available. ’once enough time passes, once he finally sees the reason, he’ll come crawling back exactly like that.’

He didn’t let himself examine, even briefly, the growing pile of evidence contradicting that particular fantasy — the fact that Logan had personally led rescue expeditions, had bled from wounds earned defending strangers who’d sheltered Julian, had spoken his name with raw, unwavering devotion in every report that filtered back to the capital, reports Mika had gone considerably out of his way to acquire secondhand purely so he could dismiss them properly.

Mika had built an entire private mythology around Logan’s supposed regret, and reality, inconveniently persistent as it was, simply hadn’t been invited to participate in the story he’d constructed for himself.

He rose, humming softly, already planning his morning routine with the same misplaced confidence that had carried him through every delusion since his transfer to the Elite Academy.

Somewhere in his mind, a version of events existed where his careful political sabotage would eventually starve Julian of support entirely, where the noble council’s mounting doubts would strip away every reason for the Emperor to keep chasing him north, where Logan’s attention would drift naturally back toward him the moment the "distraction" finally lost its shine and everyone simply moved on.

Everything would return, in Mika’s careful private fantasy, to how it should have always been from the very beginning, before an F-Class nobody upended a natural order Mika had spent his entire life comfortably assuming would remain fixed in his favor.

That version of events had absolutely nothing to do with what Logan actually felt, currently marching north through hostile terrain with blood on his blade and Julian’s name carved permanently into every reason he had left for fighting at all, or with the way Reid checked his own reflection each morning wondering whether he’d finally earned the right to say certain words aloud, or with Jayden’s careful, folded letter tucked against his chest, rehearsed a dozen different ways for a proposal he intended to actually mean this time.

Mika hummed on, blissfully unaware, sketching out his morning schedule with the same careful, deluded optimism he’d carried for weeks now, utterly convinced the story would eventually bend itself around his own preferred ending, calling for his morning tea with the easy, practiced confidence of someone who had never once, in his entire privileged life, been forced to seriously reckon with wanting something reality simply refused to give him.

---

Far beyond the reach of academies and noble councils and desperate rescue expeditions, in a place that existed somewhere between the fabric of two separate worlds, something vast and ancient stirred.

It had been patient. It was always patient, existing across a span of time that made mortal urgency seem almost quaint by comparison, watching civilizations rise and collapse across countless worlds with the same distant, unhurried interest a gardener might show toward the slow, inevitable progress of an especially long season.

It had planted Xavier and Ian generations ago, watched them grow into exactly the kind of steady, capable extensions of its will it required, content to let them expand and consolidate and prove their usefulness across an entire territory while it simply waited, elsewhere, for something worth its direct attention to finally emerge.

Something had emerged. It felt Julian the moment his rank manifested, the same way it had felt every significant disturbance across every world it had ever touched — a ripple, sharp and unmistakable, carrying the unmistakable signature of someone who didn’t fully belong to the world he currently occupied. Not corrupted, not exactly. Something else.

Something that had crossed the same fundamental boundary it had crossed itself, long before Xavier and Ian’s parents ever drew breath, arriving through means that owed nothing at all to its own careful, deliberate design.

It had watched with distant, patient interest as its own creations circled the anomaly, as Xavier’s possessive obsession deepened week by week, as Ian’s clinical calculations slowly, inevitably arrived at the same conclusion the entity itself had already reached weeks earlier, watching two grief-forged brothers spiral around a truth neither of them yet fully understood.

*a legend,* it thought, in whatever fashion something so vast and ancient thought at all, formless concepts unfolding across dimensions no mortal mind could properly perceive. *the kind that occasionally rises to challenge what I’ve built, across every world I’ve ever touched. rare. precious. worth watching closely, before I decide whether to consume it, or simply wait to see what it becomes.*

It had let Xavier and Ian handle the containment thus far, patient enough to observe how their possessive, competing interests played out, curious whether either of them might prove capable of properly breaking something this resilient before its own attention became necessary at all, curious, too, whether the strange resilience it sensed in Julian might simply crumble the way everything else eventually did, given enough pressure and enough time.

It had, so far, been disappointed in that particular hope, and something that might have been grudging respect rippled through its ancient, formless awareness at the thought.

*soon,* it thought, watching from whatever vast, formless distance it observed the world through, *I will need to see this Julian myself. not through Xavier’s obsession. not through Ian’s calculation. directly.*

It felt no urgency in the thought, no fear, simply the same distant, methodical curiosity it applied to every anomaly significant enough to warrant its personal attention across however many worlds it had touched before this one. Xavier and Ian believed themselves independent, believed their possessive rivalry over Julian was purely their own invention, born from grief and loneliness and the strange, aching hollowness that had defined both their lives since the night everything was taken from them.

They had no idea, either of them, that the thing which made them what they were had already begun, quietly, patiently, turning its vast and ancient attention toward the very man they were both so desperately trying to claim for themselves, weighing him the same way it had weighed every legend it had ever encountered before deciding, finally, whether he was worth destroying, or worth becoming something far more dangerous entirely.

*let them play their game a while longer,* it thought, something that might have been amusement rippling faint and cold through its formless awareness. *let the legend grow a little more before I decide what to do with him.*

Somewhere in a chained room hundreds of miles from any academy or capital, Julian slept beside a small, fiercely protective fox, utterly unaware that something far older and far more dangerous than either Xavier or Ian had already noticed him, already begun considering him, already started deciding, patient and unhurried, exactly what role he might play before this was all finally, truly over.
