Chapter 82: The Anchor Point
Ian visited Julian the following evening without his usual pretense of business, settling into the chair beside the bed with none of the flat, clinical distance he normally maintained.
"you’re here without a reason this time," Julian observed carefully, watching him with cautious attention.
"I have a reason," Ian said. "I simply haven’t stated it yet."
Julian kept his expression neutral, waiting.
"our arrangement has proven satisfactory," Ian said finally. "cooperation, in exchange for stability. I’ve found it more efficient than I initially calculated." He paused, something almost deliberate in the silence before he continued. "I’ve also found myself reconsidering certain assumptions about what this arrangement could become."
Julian’s stomach tightened. "meaning."
"my brother wants to possess you," Ian said, flat and precise as ever, though something beneath the words carried more weight than his usual detachment allowed. "he wants your affection, your surrender, your eventual willingness. I have no interest in any of that. I don’t require you to want anything at all."
"comforting," Julian said dryly, though wariness sharpened underneath it.
"what I find myself considering," Ian continued, ignoring the sarcasm entirely, "is a partnership. not affection. not possession the way Xavier understands it. simply two minds capable of operating with clarity neither he nor anyone else in this territory currently offers me."
Julian studied him carefully, turning the words over, searching for the angle, the trap, the thing Ian actually wanted buried beneath the clinical phrasing. "So you’re saying you want to work with me. instead of controlling me."
"I’m saying," Ian said, "that control has proven inefficient with you specifically. you adapt. you negotiate. you extract what you need from situations that should offer you nothing at all. that quality has value beyond simple containment."
"and what happens," Julian said carefully, "when Xavier finds out you’re proposing something like this behind his back."
Something flickered behind Ian’s flat expression, brief and calculating. "that," he admitted, "remains a variable I haven’t fully resolved."
Julian filed that away with careful, deliberate attention. ’friction. real friction, and Ian’s aware of it too. that’s something.’
"I’m not agreeing to anything," Julian said finally, choosing his words with care. "but I’m listening."
"that’s sufficient for now," Ian said, rising from the chair with the same unhurried precision he brought to everything. He paused at the door, glancing back once. "consider carefully what my brother offers you, compared to what I’m proposing. affection built on possession rarely survives contact with reality. a partnership built on mutual benefit tends to last considerably longer."
He left without further explanation, and Julian sat in the silence that followed, mind racing through the implications.
’he’s not just interested in me anymore,’ Julian thought slowly. ’he’s actually considering breaking from Xavier’s plan entirely. that’s not just friction. that’s a fracture I could actually use, if I play this exactly right.’
---
The following afternoon, during another of Xavier’s now-routine visits, Julian steered the conversation carefully, still turning Ian’s words over in the back of his mind.
"can I ask you something," Julian said, keeping his tone soft and idle. "about before. before either of you became what you are now."
Xavier’s expression shifted, old caution flickering behind his usual warmth, though the loneliness Julian had spent weeks cultivating won out easily, the way it always did now. "what do you want to know."
"how did it happen," Julian asked carefully. "the change. I’ve never actually understood the mechanics of it."
Xavier was quiet for a long moment, something distant and old passing behind his eyes. "there was a place," he said finally, voice low. "before either of us remember clearly, honestly. something that reached across from somewhere else entirely, and touched us both at once, the way it apparently touched a scattering of others across this Empire’s history. we were twins already. it simply— found that connection useful. easier to work through two minds that already shared everything, rather than starting fresh with someone unconnected."
Julian’s pulse quickened despite his careful, neutral expression. "something that reached across," he repeated slowly. "from somewhere else. you mean it’s not native to this world at all."
"I don’t fully understand it myself," Xavier admitted, something uncomfortable flickering behind his usual composure. "there’s a place we’re still tied to, somehow. Ian understands the mechanics of it better than I do — he always concerns himself with the structural details I find tedious. but yes. something from elsewhere. something that made us what we are, and continues, in some fashion, to sustain it."
"tied to it how," Julian pressed gently, careful to keep his tone curious rather than urgent. "like a connection you could lose, if something happened to it?"
Something sharpened behind Xavier’s expression, brief suspicion flickering through before the loneliness smoothed it back over. "why do you ask."
"just trying to understand you better," Julian said carefully, forcing warmth into his voice despite his racing thoughts. "isn’t that what you keep telling me you want? for me to actually know you?"
Xavier’s suspicion faded, replaced with something soft and pleased instead. "it is," he said. "and yes. I suppose, theoretically, severing whatever ties us to that place could destabilize what we’ve become. Ian’s mentioned something similar once, in passing, though he dismissed the possibility as functionally impossible to achieve without knowledge neither of us actually possesses."
Julian kept his expression carefully neutral, though his heart was hammering now, every instinct screaming at the significance of what he’d just heard.
’the anchor point,’ he thought, though he had no way of knowing that was the exact phrase sitting in a dusty ledger hundreds of miles away in the academy’s archive wing. ’there’s a connection. something that made them what they are, something that could theoretically be severed. and Ian understands it better than Xavier does.’
"that sounds frightening," Julian said gently, steering the conversation back toward safer emotional ground before suspicion could resurface. "not knowing exactly what you’re tied to."
"it is, sometimes," Xavier admitted, some of his earlier caution fully dissolving now beneath the careful sympathy Julian offered. "though it matters less, now that I have you to think about instead."
Julian forced a soft, careful smile, revulsion and cold, calculating triumph both tangled together in his chest in equal measure.
---
That night, alone again, Julian turned the information over and over, urgency burning bright beneath his exhaustion.
’a connection to somewhere else. something that could be severed, if anyone actually understood how. Ian knows more about it than Xavier does. and Ian’s already circling me, proposing some kind of partnership instead of possession.’
[Host,] the System said quietly, breaking through his racing thoughts. [This unit has been monitoring the conversation. The information regarding a severable connection is significant. This unit recommends continued investigation, carefully, through whichever brother proves more forthcoming.]
’you heard all of that.’
[This unit hears everything host experiences while conscious, within its monitoring capacity. This unit believes this information could prove critical, should it ever reach those searching for host.]
Julian let out a slow, unsteady breath, exhaustion and sharp, renewed purpose tangling together in his chest. ’then I keep pulling on this thread,’ he thought. ’carefully. from both of them, if I have to. because if there’s actually a way to cut whatever’s keeping them what they are, that’s worth more than anything else I’ve managed to gather so far.’
He closed his eyes, turning the fragile, dangerous plan over one final time before exhaustion finally dragged him down toward uneasy sleep.
’a connection to somewhere else,’ he thought, drifting. ’something that could be severed. I just need to figure out exactly what it is before either of them realizes how much I actually want to know.’
