Chapter 62: My Little Cat

Julian woke to a heat that had nothing to do with the room around him.

His whole body ached, a deep, bone-heavy pain radiating from somewhere he couldn’t quite place, sweat soaking through his shirt despite the chill of the stone walls surrounding him. His vision swam faintly at the edges, the ceiling blurring and sharpening in slow, uncomfortable waves, and every breath felt like it cost more effort than it should.

"fox," he rasped, voice thin and unsteady, throat dry and raw.

[This unit is here, host, though not in a form you can currently see.]

Julian frowned weakly, confusion tangling with the fever fogging his thoughts. "where..."

[The fox has been temporarily withdrawn for a necessary discussion regarding host’s development. This unit assures you it has not abandoned you. There is a matter requiring attention that cannot yet be resolved, though this unit believes the timing may soon change.]

’that’s not an explanation,’ Julian thought weakly, too exhausted to properly press the point, the words swimming sluggish through his fevered mind. ’what’s wrong with me. why do I feel like I’m burning from the inside out.’

[Host is experiencing delayed physiological consequences from the displacement ability used to first escape Xavier’s territory. This unit warned at the time that recovery could take months, and that the strain would manifest unpredictably. This fever, and the accompanying weakness, are part of that cost. This unit recommends rest. There is nothing else to be done for it at this stage beyond allowing host’s body the time it requires to stabilize.]

Julian let out a shaky, humorless breath, closing his eyes against the swimming ceiling. "of course," he muttered, voice cracking. "of course there’s nothing to be done. why would there be. why would anything ever just be simple."

[This unit understands host’s frustration. This unit shares it, to whatever extent this unit is capable of sharing anything.]

’small comfort.’

[This unit apologizes for the limitation.]

Julian didn’t answer, too tired to keep the conversation going, letting his head fall back against the thin pillow beneath him, sweat-damp hair sticking uncomfortably to his forehead. He drifted in and out after that, time losing all meaning, the fever pulling him under in long, hazy stretches broken only by brief, disorienting moments of half-clarity.

At some point, distantly, he registered Vess moving... a rare shift after so many hours of perfect, unbroken stillness... pressing something to her own throat, murmuring low words Julian’s fever-addled mind couldn’t quite parse, some manner of communication passing silently between her and someone far beyond this room. Her hollow eyes never left him even as she spoke, patient and unblinking, watching his deterioration with the same detached, clinical attention she gave everything else.

Julian tried to focus on her words, some old instinct insisting the information mattered, but the fever dragged him back under before he could catch more than fragments, and the room dissolved back into feverish, half-formed dreams of walls and gates and blood that wouldn’t stop no matter how hard he pressed his hands against it.

---

Xavier arrived faster than Julian expected, the door opening with none of his usual unhurried grace, urgency plain in the sharp, immediate way he crossed the room and knelt beside the bed.

Ian followed a moment behind, expression as flat and unreadable as ever, though something in the careful, measured way he studied Julian suggested even he’d registered the shift in condition as noteworthy, his gaze lingering a beat longer than his usual clinical assessments required.

"Vess reported you weren’t well," Xavier said, and Julian, through the haze of fever, caught something raw and unguarded flickering behind his usual composed possessiveness, something that looked disturbingly close to genuine fear. "how long has this been happening. why wasn’t I told sooner."

Julian didn’t answer immediately, too exhausted to summon the energy for defiance right now, and that alone seemed to alarm Xavier more than any sharp retort could have. His hand hovered near Julian’s shoulder, hesitating, like he wasn’t sure whether touching him would help or make things worse.

"Julian," Xavier said, voice tightening, and reached out finally, fingers brushing feverish skin with a gentleness that felt disturbingly at odds with everything he’d done to get Julian here in the first place, with the chain still locked cold and heavy around his ankle, with every cruelty stacked up between them since the very first night in the bathhouse.

"it’s the displacement," Ian said flatly, studying Julian with clinical, detached focus, arms crossed as he observed from a short distance away. "the ability he used to escape. it’s not native to a Guide’s body. the strain was always going to manifest eventually, given what it demanded of him."

"I know what it is," Xavier snapped, sharper than Julian had ever heard him speak to his brother, something raw and possessive bleeding through the words. "I want to know how to fix it."

"you can’t," Ian said simply, voice utterly without inflection despite the tension crackling between them. "not directly. the body needs time to recover from misusing power it was never built to hold. there’s no shortcut around that, no matter how much you’d prefer one to exist."

Xavier’s jaw tightened, frustration and something that looked disturbingly close to genuine worry warring behind his expression. He reached out again, this time cupping Julian’s jaw with careful, deliberate gentleness, tilting his face up despite the weak, half-hearted attempt Julian made to pull away, his strength nowhere near enough to actually resist.

"look at me," Xavier said, voice softer now, almost tender in a way that made Julian’s skin crawl worse than any of his previous cruelty had.

Julian forced his eyes open, vision swimming, and found Xavier’s expression twisted into something he’d never seen from him before... not possessive satisfaction, not cold calculation, but something that looked, disturbingly, almost like fear, raw and unguarded in a way that felt far more dangerous than his usual composed menace ever had.

"what is wrong with my little cat," Xavier murmured, thumb brushing gentle along Julian’s fevered cheek, voice dropping low and strangely gentle, the possessive nickname landing with none of its usual mocking edge, just something closer to desperate, worried tenderness.

"don’t," Julian managed weakly, voice barely more than a rasp, "call me that."

Something flickered behind Xavier’s eyes, equal parts fond and pained, and he didn’t pull his hand away despite the protest, thumb still tracing slow, careful circles against overheated skin.

"he needs rest," Ian said, voice flat but not unkind, watching the exchange with unreadable, careful attention, something almost like impatience threading through his tone now. "and time. pushing him now accomplishes nothing except making you feel better about your own helplessness."

Xavier’s jaw tightened at that, something sharp passing between the brothers, silent and loaded, a tension Julian could feel even through the fever fogging his senses, some old, familiar friction resurfacing between them that had nothing to do with him directly and everything to do with however long they’d been locked in this particular dynamic together.

"watch him closely," Xavier said to Vess finally, voice tight with barely restrained frustration, rising slowly from where he’d knelt beside the bed. "if anything changes, I want to know immediately. not an hour later. immediately."

Vess inclined her head slightly, silent as ever, and Xavier rose fully, casting one final, lingering look toward Julian before following Ian toward the door, voice dropping low as they exited, though Julian, fevered and half-conscious, still caught fragments drifting back through the closing door.

"...can’t lose him to something this stupid," Xavier was saying, voice tight, edged with something raw. "not after everything it’s cost to keep him here..."

"you won’t," Ian’s flat voice answered, utterly calm against his brother’s rising tension. "his body will recover. it simply requires patience, which has never been your strongest quality, even before any of this began."

The door sealed shut with its familiar, final click, and Julian lay there in the heavy silence that followed, sweat soaking through his shirt, exhaustion dragging him back down toward uneasy, feverish sleep, Vess’s silent, unblinking presence the only thing left keeping watch as darkness closed back in around him, the fever finally pulling him under completely.
