Chapter 54: Two of Him
The plan should have worked. Julian could feel it, the exhaustion in Xavier’s movements growing sharper with every passing minute, his attention visibly fraying between the fight in front of him and whatever thread still connected him to the horde spreading chaos across the countryside. For one brief, hopeful stretch, it looked like the strategy was paying off exactly as intended, Xavier’s strikes coming slower, his footwork less certain, some crack finally forming in the composure he’d worn like armor through every encounter so far. Then it didn’t.
[Host. Anomaly detected. Horde coordination remains stable despite Xavier’s divided attention. This unit cannot account for the discrepancy.]
Julian’s stomach dropped. "that’s not possible," he said, breathless, ducking under a strike from Xavier’s clawed hand, the effort costing him more than it should. "his focus is split, it has to be affecting them..."
"apparently not enough," Reid snarled, driving his blade forward again, sweat and blood mixing at his temple from a shallow cut he hadn’t had time to notice yet.
Xavier, despite the punishment he was taking, wore something disturbingly close to amusement through the strain twisting his features. "did you really think," he said, breath ragged but voice still carrying that same maddening calm, "that I’d leave something so important with only one point of failure?"
"what are you talking about," Jayden demanded, gold light flickering unsteady around his fists as exhaustion finally began chipping away at his own reserves too.
Xavier’s mouth curved, blood at the corner of his lips from a strike Logan had landed moments earlier. "allow me to introduce someone," he said, and lifted his head toward the tree line, voice carrying out into the dark with unnerving ease. "brother. they’ve grown curious."
A second figure stepped out from the shadows beyond the firelight, unhurried, and Julian’s whole body went rigid with cold, creeping horror.
It was Xavier. Same face. Same build. Same unsettling stillness in the way he moved, except where Xavier’s eyes carried possessive, calculating warmth beneath their coldness, this one’s eyes held nothing at all, flat and empty in a way that made the hair on the back of Julian’s neck stand straight up, worse somehow than anything Xavier himself had ever done to unsettle him.
"my brother, Ian," Xavier said, still fighting even as he spoke, parrying Reid’s next strike with barely a glance. "we’ve always shared everything. power. patience." His eyes flicked toward Julian, something dark and possessive sharpening behind them. "interests."
Ian said nothing at all, simply raised one hand, and somewhere far beyond the clearing, Julian felt the horde’s coordination sharpen instead of falter, doubling down exactly where it should have been breaking apart, like some second, steadier hand had simply taken up the slack the moment Xavier’s grip loosened.
"two of you," Julian said, horror crawling cold through his chest, voice barely above a whisper. "you’ve had two of you controlling that thing this whole time. this entire plan was doomed from the second we tried it."
"insurance," Xavier said, almost fond, wiping blood from his lip with the back of one hand. "Ian handles things when I’m otherwise occupied. and I’ve been rather thoroughly occupied with you these past weeks, wouldn’t you agree?"
"he’s a contingency plan," Ian said, voice flat and toneless, so unlike his brother’s warmer, more theatrical cadence that it sent a fresh chill down Julian’s spine. "we don’t fail from single points of vulnerability. we never have. everything Xavier builds, I safeguard. that’s simply how we function."
Jayden’s face had gone pale, the weight of the revelation crashing down hard, his stance faltering just slightly under the strain of understanding exactly how badly they’d miscalculated. "so the whole plan," he said, "splitting his attention, hoping the horde would falter..."
"was based on incomplete information," Reid finished grimly, blade lowering slightly as the full scope of the trap became clear, jaw tight with the bitter taste of a strategy unraveling in real time. "there were always going to be two of them. we walked into this thinking we understood the shape of the problem, and we didn’t."
Ian moved then, fast and silent in a way that mirrored his brother’s uncanny speed exactly, and Logan barely got his weapon up in time to block a strike that would have taken his head clean off, the force of it driving him back several stumbling steps.
"he fights the same," Logan gritted out, breathless. "identical. every movement, every angle..."
"we are identical," Ian said, voice utterly without inflection, advancing again with mechanical, relentless precision, each strike as calculated as the last. "in every way that matters."
Julian’s mind raced, horror and desperation tangling together as he watched the fight shift from difficult to nearly impossible in the span of a few terrible seconds. Two of them, coordinated, matched in power, matched in speed, and the horde now steady and unbroken no matter how hard they pressed the fight, no matter how much strength everyone around him poured into a strategy that had just been proven fundamentally hollow.
"we can’t win this," Jayden said, breathless, blocking a strike from Xavier while Reid and Logan scrambled to hold off Ian’s relentless advance. "not like this, not two against four with the horde still active..."
"we don’t have a choice," Julian snapped, forcing another unstable pulse of light from his aching hands, driving it hard into Xavier’s already-wounded shoulder, the effort leaving spots dancing at the edges of his vision.
Xavier hissed, staggering, but Ian simply pressed harder against Reid and Logan’s combined defense, utterly unbothered by his brother’s pain, as though the two of them, despite sharing a face, didn’t share anything so simple as concern for one another’s wellbeing. It struck Julian, even through the chaos, how wrong that felt... twins who fought in perfect tandem but seemed to hold nothing between them resembling actual care.
"you should have run the moment you realized," Xavier said, breathing hard now, blood soaking dark through his shoulder, "instead of wasting your strength on a plan built on half the truth."
"we’re not done yet," Julian said, though even as he said it, exhaustion dragged hard and heavy at every limb, guiding energy flickering low and unstable in his palms, the fox pressed trembling and spent against his leg, having already given everything it had trying to shield him earlier that night, its small chest heaving with effort it could barely sustain.
Ian’s flat, empty eyes turned toward Julian for the first time, studying him with the same cold, possessive interest his brother wore so much more openly, though something about the total absence of warmth behind it made it somehow worse.
"he really is exactly as valuable as you said," Ian said quietly, to Xavier, as though Julian himself weren’t standing right there listening to every word. "we should stop wasting time fighting for him and simply take him. this has already gone on longer than necessary."
"agreed," Xavier said, something settling cold and decisive behind his exhausted composure, and a silent understanding passed between the two brothers, immediate and complete, needing no further words at all between them. They moved together.
