Chapter 51: The Choice
Nobody moved to hand him over. Not for a single second.
"you can turn around and walk back wherever you crawled out from," Reid said, voice low and lethal, blade angled steady despite the cold radiating off Xavier in waves. "he’s not going anywhere with you."
Xavier’s gaze didn’t so much as flicker toward Reid, still locked entirely on Julian, patient and possessive. "you’re all very brave," he said, "for people who don’t understand what they’re standing in front of."
"we understand plenty," Jayden snapped, gold light crackling bright and furious around his fists. "we understand you kidnapped him, poisoned him, marked him against his will."
Julian pushed himself upright despite the exhaustion still dragging hard at every limb, the fox bracing tight against his leg, ignoring Reid’s sharp, immediate protest as he stepped forward, past every arm trying to hold him back.
"Julian, don’t..." Reid started.
"I’m done letting other people fight my battles for me," Julian said, voice rough but steady, and closed the distance between himself and Xavier before anyone could stop him.
Xavier’s expression shifted, something almost pleased flickering behind his eyes at the sight of Julian approaching under his own power. "there you are," he said softly. "I knew you’d..."
Julian’s hand cracked across his face before he finished the sentence, the sound of it sharp and final in the quiet clearing, Xavier’s head snapping sideways from the force of it.
Silence swallowed the whole camp. Xavier straightened slowly, one hand rising to touch his own cheek, disbelief flickering raw and unguarded across his face for just a moment before it hardened into something much colder.
"you don’t get to look at me like that," Julian said, voice shaking with fury now, refusing to back down even as every instinct screamed at him to. "like I’m supposed to be grateful. like any of this was ever a gift. you don’t get to decide what I want. you don’t get to touch me, mark me, chase me across an entire kingdom, and then act surprised when I finally hit back."
Something in Xavier’s expression cracked wide open, fury bleeding fast through the shock, his composure shattering entirely for the first time since Julian had ever known him.
"you hit me," he said quietly, voice gone flat and dangerous.
"yeah," Julian said. "I did."
Xavier’s jaw tightened, and for one terrible, suspended second, nobody in the clearing breathed.
Then he threw his head back and screamed. It wasn’t human, the sound tearing loose from him, raw and furious and ancient, and the ground itself seemed to answer it, distant shrieks and moans rising up from every direction at once, gray shapes bursting from the tree line in every possible direction, no longer converging on the camp but scattering outward instead, dozens of rogue Aberrations breaking off in every compass point like a wound spraying outward instead of closing in.
"what is he doing," Jayden shouted, already moving to intercept the nearest rogue.
"he’s not attacking us," Reid said, horror dawning fast as he watched the horde disperse in every direction, away from the camp entirely, toward the distant lights of scattered farmhouses and villages beyond the tree line. "he’s spreading them out. he’s sending them after everyone."
Xavier’s fury cooled into something colder and infinitely more controlled, watching Julian with dark, simmering eyes as his creatures scattered wide across the countryside, hunting for anyone unlucky enough to be caught outside tonight.
"every person those creatures reach," Xavier said quietly, "will be bitten. infected. turned, eventually, into exactly what you’ve spent your whole life fighting against. farmers. children. travelers on the road. hundreds of ordinary lives, Julian, unraveling one by one, spreading further with every hour that passes."
"you’re insane," Julian breathed, horror crashing through the fury, watching gray shapes vanish into the darkness in every direction, faster than any search party could possibly track them all.
"I’m patient," Xavier corrected, voice mild again now, terrifyingly calm despite the chaos he’d just unleashed. "and I’m willing to be exactly as patient as this takes. every hour you refuse me, more of them spread further. more villages. more towns, eventually, if it comes to that. I have all the time in the world, Julian. do you?"
Reid’s blade trembled slightly in his grip, torn between the urge to strike Xavier down where he stood and the horrifying knowledge that doing so wouldn’t call back a single one of the creatures already loose in the dark.
"call them back," Jayden demanded, voice cracking with fury. "call them back right now..."
"I will," Xavier said simply. "the moment Julian comes with me. not a second before."
Julian’s chest heaved, mind racing through every possibility, every angle, and finding nothing, no clean answer, no way to fight his way out of a choice that had nothing to do with strength at all.
’he’s not asking me to fight him,’ Julian thought, ice settling deep and absolute in his stomach. ’he’s asking me to choose between myself and every innocent person those things are about to find in the dark.’
"Julian, don’t you dare," Reid said, low and fierce, catching the look on his face. "don’t even think about it."
"how many people," Julian said quietly, ignoring Reid entirely, eyes locked on Xavier. "how many did you send out there."
"enough," Xavier said. "enough that by morning, several villages within a night’s walk of here will have new residents joining my collection, unless something changes before then."
The old couple, still huddled safely behind the line of Sentinels, watched with wide, horrified eyes, and Julian’s stomach turned violently at the thought of them, of anyone like them, caught alone on some quiet road with no idea what was coming for them out of the dark.
"Julian," Jayden said, voice breaking slightly, moving to stand directly in his line of sight, forcing Julian to look at him instead of Xavier. "don’t. whatever he’s threatening, we can hunt those creatures down. we have people. we have time..."
"do we really," Julian said quietly, and the raw uncertainty in his own voice scared him more than anything Xavier had said all night.
Xavier watched the exchange with patient, terrible calm, entirely unbothered by the desperation rippling through the camp around him.
"the choice is yours, Julian," he said finally, voice soft, almost gentle now, which somehow made it worse. "come with me, and I call every single one of them back before they reach anyone at all. refuse, and by morning, you’ll have to live with exactly how many lives you decided were worth less than your own freedom."
The clearing fell utterly silent, every eye turning toward Julian, waiting, and Julian stood there, chest heaving, fists clenched hard at his sides, caught between everything he’d just fought so hard to reclaim and a horror he couldn’t fight his way out of no matter how many times he’d already proven he could take a hit and keep standing.
