My F-Rank Sagea is Secretly an EX-Rank Calamity

Chapter 41: Veiled Sanctum

The air got colder the higher Asher climbed, turning sharp enough to bite at his skin.

He wasn’t on the standard student pathways anymore.

Following Nova Vesta’s silent, blue waypoint pulsing at the edge of his vision, Asher took a sweeping stone staircase that wound far above the Auric faction’s quarters.

The architecture up here was ridiculous—massive white marble arches, gold-threaded tapestries hanging from pillars, and pristine stone floors without a speck of dust.

’Nova, are you sure this is where the Veiled Sanctum is?’ Asher thought, pulling his coat tighter against the draft.

Nova didn’t bother answering. She just kept the glowing marker moving forward, guiding him straight toward a set of massive ironwood doors guarded by two tall guys in heavy, rune-etched plate armor.

As Asher stepped into the main hall, both guards instantly snapped their heads in his direction, hands dropping to the hilts of their broadswords. Their eyes narrowed at the dark Umbrax trim on his coat.

"Halt," the guard on the left grunted, his voice bouncing off the high ceiling. "This sector is restricted to the Veiled Sanctum. Turn around, kid."

Before Asher could come up with a halfway believable excuse, the green crystals embedded above the ironwood doors flashed bright gold.

The heavy doors unlocked with a deep, hydraulic thud, slowly swinging inward on silent hinges.

When the doors opened, all five High Lords turned toward the entrance at once. A sharp, heavy ripple passed through the room—their oppressive mana flaring for a fraction of a second before they reined it back in.

"Let him enter," Lord Malovik’s deep voice echoed from the central throne.

Asher blinked, feeling completely out of place as he stepped over the threshold.

The room was stunning, just like Nova had described back in the early days. High above, open-air arches showed off a panoramic view of the afternoon sky, where warm sunlight glinted off cascading waterfalls that spilled into glowing crystal pools below.

Thick, ancient runes carved into the floor hummed with raw, concentrated power.

’Wait...’ Asher scanned the room, looking at the pristine walls and open water features. ’Where are the actual bookshelves?’

Before he could process the fact that he’d been baited, his vision flared gold.

Asher gasped as a sudden burst of light erupted directly from his chest, condensing right in front of him before solidifying into Nova Vesta’s human form.

Her translucent hair drifted like starlight, her glowing eyes completely calm. Without saying a word to him, Nova turned on her heel and walked casually toward the empty seat on Malovik’s immediate right.

She smoothed out her shimmering robes and sat down beside the High Lords like she was taking her usual spot at the dinner table.

Asher’s jaw practically hit the floor.

’Nova?! What the hell are you doing over there?!’

Nova didn’t look at him. Her voice simply resonated directly inside his head.

"You wanted answers about your beast’s instability, Asher. But you cannot play the game if you do not know who is sitting at the table."

Lord Malovik leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the armrest. "Asher Flynn. You walk into the Sanctum unannounced right before your challenge. Though considering the reports about your beast’s plasma spike during the finals, I suppose your timing makes sense."

"Reports?" Asher asked, keeping his voice flat despite feeling like an ant under five massive magnifying glasses.

"The Cabal of the Sunless Eye," Lady Vespera said smoothly from her throne, her dark eyes tracking his posture. "They’ve finally made a move. Our scouts picked up their mana signatures near the outer perimeter during the Crucible finals. They’re watching you."

Asher’s stomach sank.

"They see your beast’s destructive output as an asset," Malovik said, his voice heavy as granite. "Their goal is simple: push your mana output past its breaking point during your next public match and trigger a complete, uncontained rampage in the heart of the academy. The Sovereign Challenge on the third dawn isn’t just a test of your ranking anymore. It’s a trap designed to force their remaining sleeper agents inside our walls to step into the light."

Asher looked from Malovik to Nova. Nova gave him a single, barely perceptible nod.

"So I’m just the target on the wall," Asher said, a bitter edge entering his voice.

"You are the anchor," Nova corrected out loud, her voice ringing clearly across the hall.

"Survive the challenge, keep your heat output controlled, and their leverage disappears before they can use it."

Malovik waved a dismissive hand. "You have your briefing, Flynn. Go back to your quarters and prepare yourself. The third dawn comes fast."

Asher swallowed the thirty different questions burning in his throat. He gave a brief, tight nod, turned around, and walked out of the spire, his brain completely overloaded by the mess he’d just been dropped into.

By the time Asher made it down the long outer staircases and reached the lower grounds, the afternoon sun was finally dipping behind the mountains, casting long shadows across the stone paths.

He didn’t go back to the medical ward to let the healers poke at him. He didn’t head to his own room in the male quarters either.

His feet just moved on autopilot, taking him across the central courtyard toward the Umbrax female dormitories.

The cold, distant look in Remi’s eyes from earlier kept playing on loop in his mind, bugging him way more than any warning about underground cults or sleeper agents.

He stopped outside Room 104.

Asher took a breath, knocked three times on the heavy dark wood, and waited.

For a second, nothing happened. He thought she was going to ignore him entirely. But then he heard the quiet rustle of footfalls on the stone floor inside.

The latch clicked. The door pulled back just a crack, revealing Remi in a loose gray shirt, her dark hair still damp from a shower.

When she saw him standing there, her eyes flickered with surprise, but her expression shut down almost instantly.

"Asher," she said, her voice completely flat. "It’s late. You’re supposed to be in the infirmary."

"Remi, wait," Asher said, taking a step forward. "Just give me two minutes. Please."

"We don’t have anything to talk about. Go rest."

She swung the door forward to shut it.

Before it could click into the frame, Asher slammed his boot straight into the gap, stopping the door from closing shut.

Remi pulled back, startled. Before she could push against the door again, Asher grabbed the edge, forced his way inside, and pulled the door shut behind him. He reached back and flipped the heavy iron deadbolt, locking them in.

"Asher! What is wrong with you?!" Remi snapped, stepping back with her fists clenched. "You can’t just break into my—"

"I’m sorry," Asher cut in, his voice rough. He took another step toward her. "I’m sorry, Remi. I completely messed up."

"Stop," she muttered, backing up until her heels hit the base of her bookshelf. She looked away, her bottom lip tightening as her eyes filled up. "Just stop. You completely ignored me after the Semi-finals. You walked off without saying a word like... like I was just some random spectator sitting in the bleachers."

"I just felt a lot of pressure at the time" Asher said, rubbing a hand over his face in frustration.

"I didn’t know if I was going to blow up or lose my mind, and I couldn’t risk dragging you into that."

"I don’t care about the risk!" Remi shouted, her voice cracking as a tear finally slipped down her cheek.

"I care about you, you idiot!"

Looking at her - seeing how angry, tired, and genuinely scared she actually was; the knot of nervous hesitation Asher usually carried just snapped.

He stopped worrying about saying the wrong thing. He stopped trying to manage the situation.

He took two quick strides, closing the distance between them before she could retreat any further.

Remi gasped as his shadow fell over her, but before she could say another word, Asher reached out, cupping the back of her neck with his hand and pulling her in.

He kissed her, firm and direct, shutting down every bit of noise between them.

Remi froze for a split second, her brain completely short-circuiting as the heat of his mouth hit hers.

Her heart slammed against her ribs like crazy, a sudden, electric wave crashing through her chest.

She let out a quiet, breathless sound, her hands automatically flying up to grab the fabric of his jacket, pulling him tighter instead of pushing him back.

Asher didn’t give her space to pull away. He wrapped his other arm securely around her waist, pulling her flush against him until her feet were barely brushing the floor, anchoring her right there.

When he finally pulled back, he didn’t step away entirely. He kept his forehead resting against hers, both of them breathing hard in the quiet room. He reached up, his thumb gently wiping the damp tear line off her cheek.

Remi opened her eyes, her face completely flushed red, her chest heaving as she stared at him with her hands still tangled in his collar.

The anger that had been driving her all afternoon was completely gone, replaced by a sudden, dizzying haze.

Asher looked down into her eyes, his voice low, steady, and quiet.

"Do you forgive me now?"

Remi tried to speak, but her mouth just parted slightly without making a sound. Her brain felt like it had completely short-circuited.

Between the heat of his hand on her waist, the lingering sting of his kiss, and the sudden, overwhelming closeness between them, she was completely locked up—totally at a loss for words.
