59. Beyond this singular eye
The sea was a blazing red. Fire and blood tainted the water, pouring forth from a great wound struck into the shadow of a giant. Beyond it, still lost to the shore, came the bellowing cry of rage and grief and promised war.
The sky opened up, and out came things unimaginable. Beasts and monsters of titanic size. Swarms of tendrils made from teeth and still dripping throats. Eyes shot with blood, and mouths full of malformed hands. It was a tide born of disaster and destruction. Piranhas smelling a meal freshly made. All surging towards it's source.
A blackened silhouette standing over an island made dead.
Again.
The sea was gone. There was sky, endless, a mix of blues and greens. And beneath, there was a mountain. A fortress that had stood for eons, hidden in plainest sight. A barrier of azure wrapped around it.
Laughs echoed up out of its depths. Spiders made from corpses erupting out it's age old orifices. A tomb come to life.
Laughter became soil and a scream.
Again.
Nine stood over nine over ten and ten over forty. Highest ideals of hidden name. Fangs sinking deep and true into all the Beyond. Pervasive touch bringing forth destruction. Cruel eyes seeking to fill their maw.
Cruelest eye amongst them to set itself upon a throne true. A self delivered lie. Seed of it becoming scythe and harvest and twisting string girded with black ash and ugly enamel.
Lingering truth turns toward// Reaches back, Reaches back and grabs and twists and turns and starts the clock earl-
Enough.
Celia awoke to the quiet of the night. Alone. Still on the coast, laid out flat on her front. And slowly the screaming of her mind caught up to her. Terror unfiltered flowed through her. Surrounded her waking self like a sea of monsters she lacked the ability to comprehend.
Yet, she was also totally and utterly exhausted. Too tired to actually muster up the energy to be afraid. She wasn't even sure if she could stand. Or if she should even try.
And for a little while - or maybe a long while, she wasn't sure - she didn't. She simply laid there. Processing all that had transpired. Which in the grand scheme of things, wasn't much. It was also, still a whole lot. And was a good bit more confusing than the crazy she was slowly getting used to.
Which is to say that, when she finally did decide to get up, she did so with a load of questions in tow. A number of which had to do with the visions she'd just experienced. And a greater number with the Beyonder who had forced said visions on to her. Unfortunately she was wholly unqualified to even begin forming any sort of opinion about any of it.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
At the same time, she couldn't just forget it either. That felt like it would be a dangerous kind of stupid.
Oh and it would be. Spoke a stranger in the depths of her mind. Their voice a dark mirror of her own.
And upon hearing it, Celia froze.
Slowly, she gained the courage and mental wherewithal to speak.
"Who are you, and why are you in my mind?"
The voice laughed. I think we both know. But I'm a nicer thought, kinder, more... Matured. So I'll explain it for the both of us.
You can call me future. Or eventuality. Paradox works just as well if we fancy it.
Celia, who are you talking to? Came the familiar concern of discipline.
Yes, on this we are in agreement, loathe as I am to admit it. Who are you talking with. Vice added.
Paradox made no reply.
"I think another version of myself. Which is... Yeah." Celia sighed. Already halfway to acceptance of this.
Her other selves however, were far more reluctant. The both of them turning their attention inward, scanning their shared mind for the would be addition to their crew.
They did not find her.
Can't find me. I am of a higher echelon. A reflection no longer, but your shadow staring back. Not of this time. Not yet.
Celia didn't have the energy to even ask. She wasn't even sure if it would be wise.
It would not be.
"Of course it wouldn't." She said with a long suffering sigh.
Which immediately drew the attention of her other selves. And that quickly led into explanation of what was going on. And the vision. And the possibility that a future version of herself was meddling with the past for some reason. The implications of which made Celia very uncomfortable.
Alas, there was nothing for it. The only choice she had was to accept this new weirdness and keep going forward.
No. Paradox disagreed. We actually have a banquet of options. Allow me to show you.
And at her beckoning, a screen flashed to life.

Celia couldn't stop herself. She fell backwards onto her enormous rump. A crater left in the ground beneath her as nausea assaulted her. Dizziness encroaching. The feeling that she had seen something beyond what she should've arriving like a thunderous storm. The force threatening to plunge her once again into darkness.
But it couldn't. It lacked the strength to do so. To wrench her away from the hand she felt holding her up. A hand that seemed to loom over all the world. A specter of a thing that had its attention solely focused on her.
Celia realized, with a certain horror, that it was "her" hand.
And she only had one question to ask.
"How?"
Let's just say that trying to manufacture a Beyonder beyond all others is a terrible idea. Well for everyone that isn't us, that is.
