Chapter 91: The snob and his lover

Noah’s POV

A little chirp coming from a distance wakes me up.

I breathe a sigh when I realize how close I am to Elias. We are basically cuddling right now. All I have to do is move a bit closer and our lips would meet in a soft kiss.

My lips lift in a small smile as I realize this is a rare moment when I get to wake up before Elias. This little knowledge makes me feel proud of myself and it gives me a bit of time to study his face.

He has a handsome face that was created to intimidate the entire world, but in his sleep, he looks adorable with his bottom lip jutting out in a little pout.

I want to take a picture, he’s so cute!

I put my hand over my mouth as I laugh silently at the thought of getting a phone and taking a picture of a pouty Elias Deus.

I’ll post the picture on X and caption it ’hey, so, this is your scary Elias ’Death’ Deus’.

If I don’t do that, I’ll probably sell the picture to a journalist.

I know Elias would definitely kill me, the journalist, and everyone who would see the picture, but the idea of embarrassing him is fun to imagine.

I return to staring at him and I notice the tiny mole under his nose. It’s small, yet it elevates his good looks.

The Goddess played an unfair game of giving a crazy man these looks. It’s like giving a schizophrenic a loaded gun. Innocent people are going to get hurt along the line.

"Jerk" I murmur and Elias’s breath stutters in his sleep. Out of concern, I move closer to see what’s wrong. Is he having a bad dream?

The alpha seems to have heard the question and he answers with a small whimper and a downturn of his lips.

The playfulness in my head disappears as I realize how lonely he looks right now.

Whenever he’s awake, he looks so untouchable and confident in his cold and distant world, but now that he’s asleep, he looks like he needs a hug.

My heart aches for him.

I’ve gotten myself addicted to running my fingers through his silky hair, so I do it again. I bury my fingers in his hair and he flinches.

Elias’s face hardens into a scowl at my touch but after two seconds, he softens to me.

"You’re always on edge" I say quietly, lightly rubbing the tips of my fingers into his scalp. I keep on doing it till his breathing deepens.

He more looks relaxed now, so I take it a step further by singing for him.

I start to sing a song from one of my favorites movies, A thousand years by Christina Perri from Twilight, as soft as I can.

The memorized lyrics fall out of my mouth as I keep on massaging his hair. Even the breeze from outside seems to like this as the curtain moves lightly.

Everything about this moment feels too domestic for the kind relationship me and Elias have, but it’s okay...I can love him openly when he’s asleep.

There’s a bird twittering closer to the window and the sweet sound relaxes me too.

I change the song from A Thousand Years to singing Nervous by The Neighbourhood.

Finally waking up, Elias lets out a long breath and opens his eyes to look at me. The alpha’s sleep heavy eyes hold mine, and I stay frozen by his side with my fingers in his brown locks.

"I like your voice" he murmurs, eyes drooping shut and voice rough.

"Uh...thanks" I say shyly.

I move my hand to take my fingers out of his hair, but he catches my hand and puts it back in his hair.

"Don’t stop yet" he orders and I swallow nervously.

"Okay" I whisper and continue to massage his head.

I hope he didn’t hear any of the songs I sang. Why do I keep shooting myself in the foot by talking and singing my feeling in his ear?

’Noah, get your act together’ I swallow and bring myself back to studying my enemy-crush-hated-husband.

I love the way his brows pull together when he likes a particular spot, and I especially like the way his lips press together to hold back happy sounds.

"What’s the time?" the alpha asks groggily and I scowl.

"I don’t know" I say.

I’m not a magician, am I?

"There’s a clock in your line of sight, Noah" he says and I look up. Truly there’s a clock hanging on the wall.

The ivory and gold designed clock is beautifully made. It’s round, it has roman numerals instead of numbers, and the tiny clock hands do their job.

The clock hands move really well and the sound is smooth, soothing even.

"The time, Noah" Elias says and I blink at the device.

It’s a really pretty clock, but I have a problem; actually it’s two problems, if I’m being honest.

One problem is that, I have trouble reading roman figures. And the second problem is that I don’t know how to read an analog clock.

"The time is...uh..."

"You can’t read it?"

"Yes I can" I snap.

"Then what’s the time, Noah?" he asks calmly.

"What kind of psychopath uses an analog clock in a digital world anyways?" I huff in frustration and Elias shakes his head with laughter.

"There’s beauty in exercising one’s brain. In a lazy world, isn’t it better to have a form of beauty and supremacy with knowledge?" he asks and I make a face at him.

"You’re just a snob" I say pointedly.

"What is beautiful to you then?" he asks, looking at me with seriousness on his face.

Of course, he wants to have a philosophical conversation at Goddess-knows-when in the morning.

"There’s already beauty in living. Enjoying the flowers, taking a walk on the beach, playing around with friends...just living" I shrug.

"What’s the point of living like that when everyone and everything dies?" Elias asks, eyes holding mine in a compelling stare.

"What if I convince you that living is worth it?" I ask him back.

"How do you intend to do that? I’m called death for a reason. Everything I touch dies, Noah" his voice dips low and I purse my lips.

What can I possibly say to beat him?

I look at my own reflection in his eyes, and I see how beautiful I am through his gaze. I might be hyping myself up, but I look alive to him.

"But I’m alive...aren’t I?" I ask and his lips lift in a small smile.

"Happy birthday, Noah" he says and my jaw drops.

Wait...is it already my birthday?

"How’d you know it was my birthday?" I ask and he sighs, breaking our eye contact and turning to lie on his back.

"I know a lot of things. I also know you need to leave before my mom comes to check on me" he laughs and I gasp.

I have to get out before Lucas comes looking for me.

"Oh no" I whisper and jump off the bed. In my panicked movements, if I didn’t sneak a peek at Elias, I would have missed the longing look in his eyes.

"Bye, Elias. I’ll come see you later" I say and head for the door.

"Noah" he calls and I pause.

"Yes?"

"Do you want sixty-nine positions for a birthday gift?" he asks and my jaw hits the floor for the second time in this morning.

"Shut up" I hiss, blushing hard as I sneak back out with the goofiest smile on my face.

Oh goddess...I’m gone. I’m so gone for him. If my dad ever come for me and he’s actually being misunderstood by the Deus, would I be able to convince him to let me stay?
