Immortal Ascension Through Marriage: Investing in My Wife Get Returns

Chapter 169 - 168: Continental Court

The morning sun of Sky Jade City was completely eclipsed by the sheer majesty of the gathering.

Adjacent to the hovering Celestial Summit, built directly into the bedrock of the capital’s highest mountain, was the Central Continent’s Grand Court. It was a colossal, open-air amphitheater vast enough to hold a hundred thousand cultivators. Yet today, the air within it was so suffocatingly dense with absolute power that even breathing required deliberate effort.

At the absolute zenith of the Grand Court, seated upon five towering thrones, were the true rulers of the mortal plane.

The Five Emperors.

Each of them had long since shattered the boundaries of what ordinary cultivators believed possible, stepping firmly into the legendary VoidRefinement Realm. They were existences standing at the pinnacle of the mortal world, figures whose names alone were enough to make entire provinces tremble.

They did not need to release their cultivation.

They did not need to speak.

Their mere presence distorted the surrounding heavens. The light around their thrones bent and fractured as though even space itself struggled to bear their existence.

Above each throne, massive banners stretching for nearly a kilometer snapped violently in the high-altitude wind. Each bore the divine symbol of its respective continent: the sacred image of one of the Five Divine God Beasts.

These were not merely symbols of authority.

Each Emperor was said to possess the Elemental Spirit of the Divine God Beast represented by their continent, allowing them to command its primordial power to an almost unimaginable degree. Their mastery had long since surpassed ordinary elemental laws, reaching a level where even the surrounding heavens seemed to bend beneath their will.

To the East sat Emperor Dongyu, beneath the banner of the Azure Dragon (Qinglong). His aura pulsed with the boundless, ancient vitality of Spring and Wood. Vines of ethereal green energy constantly bloomed and withered around his throne, representing the infinite cycle of life and the crushing growth of the eastern forests.

To the West sat Emperor Xiyan, beneath the banner of the White Tiger (Baihu). Representing Metal and Autumn, Emperor Xiyan was a brash, heavily scarred warlord. His aura was composed of millions of invisible swords that constantly sliced the air around him. He radiated a pure killing intent.

To the South sat Emperor Nanheng, beneath the banner of the Vermilion Bird (Zhuque). She was a vision of terrifying beauty, representing Fire and Summer. The air around her throne boiled, the space completely distorted by an invisible, searing heat that could melt a Nascent Soul cultivator into ash with a single glance.

To the North sat Emperor Beiming, beneath the banner of the Black Tortoise (Xuanwu). Representing Water and Winter, his presence was like staring into a bottomless, freezing abyss. The dark energy swirling around him depicted a colossal tortoise entwined with a massive serpent, projecting a defense so absolute that it seemed the sky itself could fall and he would remain entirely unmoved.

And finally, seated in the absolute center, hosting this monumental gathering, was Emperor Tianxu of the Central Continent. Above him flew the banner of the Qilin (Huanglong). Representing Earth and the ultimate balance of the other four directions, Emperor Tianxu was the anchor of the realm. He wore imperial robes of gold and yellow, his eyes radiating a serene authority. The Qilin spirit within him grounded the chaotic energies of the other four Emperors, establishing the Central Continent as the undisputed heart of the world.

"Tianxu!" Emperor Xiyan’s voice suddenly boomed, the warlord of the West leaning forward on his throne, his White Tiger aura flashing. He possessed a well-known delight in attempting to publicly embarrass his host. "You dragged us all the way from our continents to watch your provinces squabble. I hope for your sake the bloodletting today is entertaining. If your Central Continent’s ’geniuses’ are as soft as the silk you wear, I will be severely disappointed!"

Emperor Tianxu did not even turn his head. He merely smiled, a terrifying expression that caused the earth beneath the amphitheater to rumble.

"Patience, Xiyan," Emperor Tianxu replied, his voice echoing with the heavy resonance of the Qilin. "The Central Continent does not breed soft men. We forge gods. And today, you will witness the crucible."

With a subtle wave of Emperor Tianxu’s hand, the grand trumpets of the court sounded, their notes shattering the clouds above.

Stepping forward onto the central platform was Elder Xuanji, the Chief Dao Adjudicator of the Central Continent’s Cultivation Court. He was a Peak Soul Transformation expert, a man whose word was absolute law within the confines of the tournament.

"Silence!" Elder Xuanji commanded, his voice sweeping over the tens of thousands of cultivators, instantly plunging the colossal arena into a breathless hush.

"The formal registration for the Peerless God Tournament has concluded. However," Elder Xuanji paused, his sharp eyes sweeping over the delegations, "by decree of Emperor Tianxu, and in honor of the esteemed Emperors gracing us with their presence, the structure of this century’s tournament has been amended."

A ripple of uneasy whispers broke out among the provincial lords. An amendment? Now?

"For the first time in the tournament’s history, there will be two preliminary rounds before the main bracket commences," Elder Xuanji announced. "This is not merely a warm-up. It will determine the true worth of those claiming to be champions. Every province was instructed to bring a retinue of their finest cultivators. In these preliminary rounds, you will be thrown into a collective crucible. Only the top-ranked cultivator from each province’s retinue will earn the official title of Participating General and advance to the main tournament."

The crowd murmured loudly. This meant that the sect prodigies brought as backups or elite guards were suddenly thrust into a brutal, free-for-all qualifier against their own designated champions just to secure the spot.

Elder Xuanji raised his hand, silencing them again.

"The rules of the crucible are absolute," the Chief Adjudicator continued, his voice turning lethally cold. "Contestants may fight with full lethal force. You may use any weapon, any artifact, and any method at your disposal. Accidental or battle-related deaths are an accepted, anticipated risk of the tournament. However, there is one explicit prohibition."

Elder Xuanji’s gaze swept over the cruelest faces in the Upper Division.

"Intentionally executing an opponent out of personal grudge or malice once they have explicitly admitted defeat, yielded, or lost consciousness is strictly forbidden. If an opponent surrenders, your blade stops. If you violate this rule, you will not just be disqualified. You will be executed by the Dao Court on the spot. Is this understood?"

The heavy, oppressive silence served as their collective agreement.

"Now," Elder Xuanji unrolled a massive scroll of golden silk. "We shall announce the Upper Division nominations."

The Adjudicator began listing the core provinces. With every name, the terrifying auras of the Six Peerless Geniuses flared, reminding everyone of the insurmountable mountains standing at the peak of the Central Continent.

There was Jiang Wan, the sword genius of the Wan Jian Sword Sect, who brought a retinue of fifty elite swordsmen, though everyone knew he would effortlessly claim the top spot. There was Ye Ao, arrogant and sneering, backed by the beast-tamers of the Ye Province. There was Ling Chuan, standing honorably with his sect brothers. There was the terrifying sixteen-year-old anomaly, Feng Yao, staring blankly at the sky. And there was Xuan Mingzhe, the tri-Dao cultivator, the undefeated legend who stood at the absolute threshold of Soul Transformation, radiating an oppressive aura that warped the space around his retinue.

"And finally," Elder Xuanji read, his brow furrowing slightly as he reached the bottom of the scroll. He looked up, his gaze finding Lord Zhao Shenming and the small delegation from the Zhao Province.

"The Zhao Province," Elder Xuanji announced, his voice carrying a note of profound incredulity, "has invoked the new Ascension Clause. They have forfeited their position in the Lower Division entirely to gamble in the Upper Division."

Loud gasps and murmurs of shock rippled through the Upper Division delegations. For a Lower Division province to willingly step into the meat grinder of the core provinces was unheard of. It was viewed as suicidal arrogance.

"Because the Zhao Province invoked this clause," Elder Xuanji continued, reading the strict stipulations of the law, "they are permitted to nominate only one cultivator to brave the preliminary round. Furthermore, the nominee, Lin Yuan, must place within the Top Five of all Upper Division participants in these preliminary rounds. If he fails to secure a Top Five ranking overall, the Ascension Clause is immediately forfeited, and he will be demoted back to the Lower Division in disgrace."

The Adjudicator looked directly at Lin Yuan, who stood calmly beside Bai Qingyue.

"The Zhao Province nominee: Lin Yuan. Cultivation Realm: Early-Stage Spirit Severing...."
