Chapter 49: The Abyssal Reaper’s Embrace and the Shadow Weaver’s Smile
Location: Kingdom of Sunderland - Outskirts of Vanguard City
The early morning fog rolling off the eastern moors was thick, blending seamlessly with the industrial smog of Vanguard City. In an empty, abandoned field far from the prying eyes of the capital's steam-knights, three figures stood in absolute silence.
Cain closed his eyes, inhaling the damp, metallic air. He released the intricate magical bindings holding his disguise together. The elegant gothic dress and the feminine features of Lady Ashford dissolved into a flurry of dark particles. When the ambient mana cleared, he stood in his true, original male form.
He wore a sharply tailored, pitch-dark suit that absorbed the faint morning light. His hair was a messy, stylized dark black, with striking violet streaks running through the fringe. When he opened his eyes, they were a piercing, deep violet, encircled by an ethereal, glowing golden ring—the physical manifestation of the demonic aura he had absorbed.
Standing to his right was Sofia Vileblood, the true Demon Lord. The frigid morning wind whipped across the field, catching her incredibly long, dark hair, sending it flying behind her to reveal the striking, blood-crimson underlayer. Her crimson eyes were narrowed, tracking the shifting shadows in the fog.
To Cain’s left, Sebastian stood perfectly straight, his white gloves pristine. Though his posture was that of a flawless butler, the subtle, terrifying condensation of dark matter around his fingertips indicated he was entirely prepared to rip reality apart at a moment's notice.
"They are here," Sofia murmured, her voice carrying over the wind.
The atmosphere instantly skyrocketed in density. It felt as though gravity itself had doubled. The air grew so thick and oppressive that the very grass beneath their feet began to wither and turn to ash.
From the dense fog, two silhouettes slowly materialized, walking toward them with terrifying, synchronized precision.
As they closed the distance, their faces became distinct. On the left was Duchess Zephyra, the Shadow Weaver—a stunningly elegant woman wrapped in a dress woven entirely from living, shifting darkness. On the right was Crimson Scarlet, the Higher Abyssal Reaper. Despite possessing a title that struck absolute terror into the hearts of humanity, Scarlet looked like a delicate, petite young girl, her gothic lolita attire adorned with heavy, lethal-looking scythe motifs.
The five beings came to a halt, standing a mere ten paces apart.
The tension was apocalyptic. A single misstep here would level Vanguard City in a matter of seconds. Cain stared at them without blinking, his violet and gold eyes tracking their micro-movements. Sebastian subtly shifted his weight, preparing to intercept the Reaper.
Scarlet’s eyes narrowed into crimson slits. She stared intensely at Sofia, the air around her crackling with pure, destructive energy. She took a step forward.
And then, the terrifying, world-ending aura completely vanished.
"Sofia-sama! I found you!" Scarlet squealed, her voice suddenly shifting to a high-pitched, incredibly childish octave.
Before anyone could react, the Abyssal Reaper launched herself forward like a missile, completely ignoring Sebastian's defensive stance, and crashed into Sofia. She wrapped her arms tightly around the Demon Lord's waist, burying her face into Sofia's chest, nuzzling affectionately.
Cain blinked, completely stunned. His defensive magic fizzled out.
Beside him, Sebastian’s jaw physically unhinged, his mouth dropping open in a rare, uncharacteristic display of utter shock. The flawless, demonic butler stared at the clinging loli with blank disbelief.
Zephyra simply stood behind Scarlet, covering her mouth with a delicate, black-lace fan, chuckling softly. "Oh dear, she has been quite impossible to manage these past few weeks."
While Scarlet was happily hugging Sofia, she turned her head, stealing a glance at Cain. Her eyes immediately widened as she registered his magical signature. The exact same, distinct, overwhelming Demon Lord aura that belonged to Sofia was radiating outward from the human in the dark suit.
Scarlet gasped dramatically, pointing an accusing finger at Cain. "Sofia-sama! Is... is he your husband?!"
Zephyra’s chuckling instantly stopped. The Shadow Weaver lowered her fan, her eyes widening in genuine, profound surprise as she finally analyzed Cain's aura.
Cain let out a long, heavy sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Let's calm down," he said, his voice flat and exhausted. "We can discuss this without fighting, correct?"
"Yes, of course," Zephyra agreed smoothly, quickly recovering her aristocratic composure. "We came for answers, not a war."
Scarlet, however, puffed out her cheeks and scoffed, looking up at Sofia with teary, betrayal-filled eyes. "I can't believe it! Sofia-sama, you left me... you left the entire Demon Realm... just for this handsome guy?! I thought we were going to conquer the world together!"
Despite her terrifying combat capabilities, Scarlet was incredibly childish and silly outside of battle. Sofia couldn't help but smile, her terrifying persona melting away. She raised her hand and gently patted Scarlet's head, smoothing out the girl's chaotic hair.
"I did not leave you for a romance, Scarlet," Sofia said softly. "I have to do something very important. Something far more crucial than simply attacking the human kingdoms."
Sofia snapped her fingers. A complex array of spatial runes expanded beneath their feet, flashing with brilliant crimson light.
Location: Vileblood Family Mansion - Private Parlor
Space warped, and the five of them seamlessly materialized inside the luxurious, soundproofed private parlor of the Vileblood Mansion.
Zephyra immediately took a seat on one of the velvet sofas, crossing her legs gracefully. She looked directly at Cain, her mind clearly connecting the dots at lightning speed.
"So," Zephyra purred, her eyes glinting with dark intelligence. "That human... Kyouya Kusanagi, or should I say, Cain. You absorbed Lady Sofia's Demon Lord Aura. That is how you bypassed the absolute divine seal on Floor 100 of the Outland Dungeon. It actually succeeded. Fascinating."
Scarlet scoffed again, crossing her arms and turning her nose up at Cain. "I don't understand all that complicated seal stuff! But I'm just glad this weird guy didn't take my precious Sofia-sama away from me as a trophy!"
Cain felt a vein throb in his temple. He glared at the petite demon general. "Why does this one keep spewing negative nonsense about me? My patience is already wearing thin dealing with a childish Loli girl, let alone one parading as the terrifying Crimson Scarlet."
Scarlet squeaked indignantly. She immediately scrambled behind Sofia, grabbing the back of the Demon Lord's coat and peeking out from behind her waist. "Sofia-sama, protect me! That guy is staring at me creepily!" Scarlet then stuck her tongue out at Cain, pulling down her lower eyelid to taunt him.
Cain exhaled a breath of pure, unfiltered exasperation. He looked at Sofia dead in the eyes. "I completely understand why you ran away from the Demon Realm."
Zephyra’s low, melodic chuckle returned, cutting through the bickering. But as the laughter faded, the ambient temperature in the parlor plummeted. The shadows in the corners of the room began to writhe and stretch unnaturally toward the Shadow Weaver.
Zephyra leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. Her elegant, composed demeanor vanished entirely, replaced by something deeply, horrifically twisted.
"So, the rumors I sensed from your residual mana are true," Zephyra whispered, her voice dropping to a sinister, breathy rasp. "We are going to eliminate the Goddess Kamiya, right?"
Cain tensed. Zephyra was smiling, but it was a terrifying, ear-to-ear creepy grin that stretched far too wide across her face. Her eyes began to glow with a blinding, toxic-purple light.
"How absolutely... fascinating," Zephyra breathed, bringing both of her hands up to cup her own face, her long, dark nails digging slightly into her porcelain cheeks. Her body trembled with an ecstatic, unholy excitement. "What will it feel like, I wonder? To tear the flesh of a divine being? What will her holy blood taste like on my tongue? Oh, I am so very excited to see her fall."
Cain took a subtle step back, a chill running down his spine. Forget the bratty Abyssal Reaper, he thought, eyeing the trembling Shadow Weaver. Zephyra is infinitely creepier than Scarlet.
Sofia, however, remained completely unfazed. "Your loyalty remains unchanged, then, Zephyra?"
"I am always loyal to you, Lady Sofia," Zephyra purred, her eyes still glowing with that mad, fanatical light as she slowly lowered her hands. "To the very end of reality."
Scarlet poked her head out from behind Sofia, looking confused but fiercely determined. "Yeah! What she said! I don't really understand all the complicated goddess-killing stuff, but I'm loyal to Sofia-sama too!"
Sofia smiled, a genuine expression of relief washing over her features. She looked at Cain, then back to her two generals.
"Good," Sofia commanded, her voice ringing with the absolute authority of the Demon Lord. "Rest for tonight. Tomorrow, we depart for the Easternmost region of Sunderland. The hunt for the Goddess begins."
