Chapter 35: The Sapphire Dress and the Serpent’s Charm
Location: Sunderland Nation - Port Triton, Lord Sterling’s Coastal Estate
The grand ballroom of Lord Sterling’s coastal estate was a breathtaking fusion of eras. The towering architecture boasted the heavy, gothic stone pillars of the Middle Ages, yet the illumination came from the early industrial revolution—intricate brass gas-lamps and humming, mana-powered crystal chandeliers that bathed the room in a warm, golden glow.
The elite of Port Triton had gathered in full force. High-ranking military officers, portly merchant lords adorned in heavy jewelry, and elegant noblewomen gossiping behind feathered fans filled the room. Near the grand staircase, several High Cardinals of the Church stood in their immaculate white and gold robes, their presence a silent reminder of the continent's true ruling power.
At the entrance, Lord Sterling stood greeting his guests. When the Vileblood party arrived, conversations throughout the immediate vicinity ground to an absolute halt.
Sofia Vileblood was a vision of devastating, lethal elegance in a floor-length, blood-red evening gown. Sebastian stood flawlessly behind her in a crisp, midnight-black butler’s tailcoat.
And then, there was Ashford.
Cain, entirely against his will, had been forced out of his standard attendant suit. Sofia had practically wrestled him into a breathtaking, deep sapphire-blue ballgown that exposed his delicate shoulders and cascaded to the floor in layers of expensive silk. His midnight-black hair was pinned up elegantly, with a few stray strands perfectly framing his striking, golden-ringed eyes. He looked every inch the flawless, untouchable noblewoman.
Internally, Cain was committing spectacular acts of mental violence against Sofia.
"Ah, Lady Vileblood! You honor my home with your presence," Lord Sterling beamed, stepping forward to kiss Sofia’s hand. His oily gaze immediately shifted to Cain, lingering entirely too long on the exposed curve of 'her' neck. "And you have dressed your attendant exquisitely for the occasion. A bold choice."
"Ashford is far more than a mere attendant, Lord Sterling," Sofia smiled mysteriously. "I simply wanted her to experience the heights of Sunderland society."
Sterling was quickly pulled away by a group of his sycophantic nobles. The moment he was gone, Sofia turned to Cain, offering a wicked, amused smirk. "Mingle, my dear Ashford. I have Cardinals to speak with."
Without another word, Sofia vanished into a throng of aristocratic women, leaving Cain completely alone in the center of the room.
I am going to feed her to a dungeon boss, Cain thought, letting out a soft, exasperated sigh.
He seamlessly navigated the crowd, moving with a practiced, gliding grace that hid his murderous intentions. He plucked a crystal glass of red wine from a passing waiter's tray and retreated to the darkest corner of the ballroom, hoping the shadows would swallow him.
It was a vain hope.
"Lady Ashford?" a hesitant, cultured voice called out.
Cain turned to see Lord Julian Vance. The young nobleman looked dashing in his formal navy-blue military coat, though he seemed incredibly out of place amidst the corrupt, greedy faces of the other nobles.
"Lord Julian," Cain replied, pitching his voice into its soft, feminine register. "I did not expect to see you here."
"I... I did not wish to come," Julian admitted, glancing around nervously. "But my family requires a presence at these events to maintain our political standing. To be entirely honest, I am glad I did, if only to speak with you again."
Cain took a slow sip of his wine, his golden-ringed eyes watching the young man carefully. "Is that so?"
Julian stepped closer, lowering his voice into a hushed, urgent whisper. "Lady Ashford, I do not know the full extent of your family's relationship with Lord Sterling, but you must be careful. This party... it is his hunting ground. He is a knavish, cruel man, especially toward beautiful women who owe him favors. If he attempts anything, or if you feel unsafe tonight, please come to me. I will help you, regardless of the consequences."
Cain paused, genuinely surprised by the young lord's earnestness. Amidst a sea of vipers, this boy was actually trying to play the heroic knight to a complete stranger. If he only knew he was trying to protect a Calamity-Class Abyssal Demon from a fat merchant, Cain thought, feeling a rare twinge of pity.
"Why are you so eager to help me, Lord Julian?" Cain asked.
Before he could answer, the grand orchestra at the far end of the ballroom began to play. The soft, melodious wail of a violin filled the hall, perfectly matched by the rhythmic, heartbeat-like vibration of a grand piano. The nobles began to pair off, drifting toward the center of the polished marble floor.
Julian’s face flushed slightly red. He stood up straight and offered his hand. "Would you... do me the honor of this dance, Lady Ashford?"
Cain stared at the outstretched hand. He debated rejecting the boy, but causing a scene would draw more attention. Reluctantly, Cain placed his gloved hand into Julian's. "I accept."
Julian’s face broke into an incredibly bright smile as he led Cain to the dance floor.
As they fell into the rhythm of the waltz, Cain realized just how terrifying Sofia’s training had been. His body moved perfectly, effortlessly mirroring Julian’s lead, gliding backward without once looking at his feet. The sapphire dress twirled beautifully around them.
Julian was utterly captivated. He stared at Cain’s face, his eyes wide and completely unblinking. He looked as though he had been put under a divine spell.
Poor noble, Cain thought, watching the boy's infatuation deepen with every step. He is falling in love with a ghost. A highly dangerous, male ghost. The rest of the ballroom seemed to fade away for Julian, but Cain’s hyper-aware senses tracked everything. He saw the other nobles stopping to watch them. He saw Sofia standing on the mezzanine, sipping red wine and watching him with deep amusement. And, most worryingly, he saw Lord Sterling standing with his companions, his greedy eyes locked entirely on Cain.
"You are... dancing perfectly," Julian whispered quietly, his voice full of awe. "I have never met anyone like you."
"You are too kind," Cain replied smoothly, perfectly playing the part.
As the final note of the piano echoed through the hall, Julian bowed deeply, thanking her with absolute sincerity before respectfully excusing himself to rejoin his family.
As Julian walked away, Cain let out a quiet sigh, walking back toward the edge of the room. How much longer do I have to endure this charade?
Suddenly, the harsh sound of whispering reached his ears.
"Look at her," a portly noblewoman sneered behind her fan. "She dances well, but it is entirely inappropriate. A mere butler—an attendant!—wearing Gander silk and waltzing with the son of Commander Vance?"
"Disgraceful," another muttered. "Lady Vileblood has forgotten her place, dressing her servants like royalty."
Cain ignored them, but the whispers grew louder, drawing the attention of the surrounding crowd.
Just as the tension peaked, the sharp, commanding clink of a spoon against a wine glass rang out. Sofia stepped down from the mezzanine, her presence instantly demanding absolute silence.
"I hear whispers regarding my dear Ashford," Sofia announced, her voice carrying clearly across the grand hall. "It seems I have done her a grave disservice by hiding the truth. Ashford is not a servant. She is the last surviving daughter of the fallen Noble House of Ashford. When her family perished, the Vilebloods adopted her in secret to protect her lineage. But tonight, she steps back into the light of society."
The ballroom erupted into a collective gasp.
Lord Sterling’s jaw practically hit the floor, his eyes widening with newfound realization. Julian, watching from across the room, looked equally stunned.
By declaring Ashford a true noblewoman, Sofia had completely changed the game. Cain was no longer untouchable "property" of the Vilebloods; he was an unmarried noblewoman with no male patriarch to protect her. He was suddenly the most valuable prize in the room.
Instantly, a swarm of young lords and older, wealthy merchants descended upon Cain, tripping over themselves to introduce themselves, kiss his hand, and offer him drinks.
Cain forced a polite smile, but his eyes screamed murder as he looked at Sofia. She planned this from the very beginning.
Before the mob could completely crush him, the crowd suddenly parted. Lord Sterling, flanked by two High Cardinals of the Church, cut through the throng.
"Gentlemen, gentlemen, please give the lady some room to breathe," Sterling commanded smoothly. The male nobles immediately backed away, too terrified of Sterling's influence to argue.
The Cardinals nodded politely to Cain, offering a brief blessing before excusing themselves to speak with the King's envoy.
Left entirely alone with Cain, Lord Sterling stepped uncomfortably close.
"The attention of so many suitors can be quite overwhelming, Lady Ashford," Sterling said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "The ballroom is dreadfully hot. How about you step out onto the eastern balcony to get some fresh air? Do not worry, I will not follow you and disturb your peace. I will merely guide the way."
Cain looked at Sterling. Suddenly, he felt a strange, invisible pressure against his mind.
[System Alert]
Warning: Hostile Mana Detected.
Spell Type: [Hypnotic Suggestion - Eye of the Viper]
Effect: Subjugates the target's free will, compelling obedience and extreme docility.
Resolution: [Absolute Resistance] applied. Spell effect NULLIFIED.
Cain’s golden-ringed eyes met Sterling's. The corpulent noble's irises had briefly flashed a sickly, unnatural shade of violet. Sterling was using an illegal charm spell, likely the very method he used to trap so many other women into his debt and his bed.
He wants me isolated, Cain analyzed in a fraction of a second. He promises not to follow, but his men are likely waiting on that balcony to abduct me while I am 'hypnotized'.
If Cain broke the spell, the cover was blown. But if he played along, he could see exactly what Lord Sterling was hiding in the dark.
Cain purposely let his eyelids droop slightly, letting his expression go entirely blank and docile.
"Thank you, Lord Sterling," Cain said, his voice flat and perfectly monotonous, mimicking the effects of a charmed victim. "I will go to the balcony."
Lord Sterling’s face broke into a massive, guileful smile of pure triumph. "Take your time, my dear. The night is young."
As Cain turned and walked obediently toward the heavy glass doors of the eastern balcony, he felt the cool night air brush against his face. Sterling thought he had successfully ensnared a helpless bird. He had no idea he had just opened the cage for an apex predator.
