Behind the wedding veil,The Dairy of April

36:A Shadow in the Rain

A Shadow in the Rain

The rain began just before sunset.

Soft at first.

Then steady enough to blur the city lights into streaks of gold and silver.

Ophelia stood by the window of her apartment, a cup of untouched coffee cooling in her hands.

Her eyes remained fixed on the street below.

The black sedan from the previous night hadn't returned.

Or perhaps...

It had.

Just not where she could see it.

She let the curtain fall back into place.

"Paranoia keeps you alive," she murmured.

It was something her commanding officer had told her during her first year as a military operative.

"Never ignore the feeling that you're being watched."

She hadn't survived years in the field by dismissing her instincts.

Her phone buzzed.

Ethan.

"Good morning... or should I say good evening? Busy?"

A smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

She typed back.

"Trying to organize my work."

His reply came almost instantly.

"Then I have the perfect excuse to interrupt you."

She laughed quietly.

A second message followed.

"There's a charity art auction this Saturday. My grandmother, Elena, insists you come."

Ophelia read the message twice.

Another Ashford event.

Another opportunity to observe.

"Tell Elena I'll be there."

A few seconds later, Ethan replied.

"She'll be thrilled."

Across the city...

Inside Ashford Holdings.

Celeste Harrison closed the file on her desk.

A knock sounded.

"Come in."

Her secretary entered.

"Ma'am, Mr. Nathan called from Singapore."

"Put him through."

Nathan's voice came over the speaker.

"Has anything unusual happened while I've been away?"

Celeste leaned back.

"Nothing that concerns you."

"And Ophelia?"

There was a brief silence.

"She's been spending time with Ethan."

Nathan's voice remained calm.

"I expected that."

"You still don't trust her?"

"I don't trust people I can't explain."

Celeste looked out her office window.

"You've only met her once."

"Once was enough."

After a pause, Nathan added,

"Keep an eye on her."

The line went dead.

Celeste stared at the silent phone.

"For someone who's always away..."

"...you notice far too much."

That Saturday arrived sooner than expected.

The charity auction was held inside one of the city's oldest museums.

Guests dressed in elegant evening wear filled the grand hall.

Paintings, sculptures and rare collections stood beneath soft golden lights.

Ethan greeted Ophelia with a smile.

"You came."

"I did promise Elena."

"I'd like to think you came for me."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Don't get ahead of yourself."

He laughed.

"I'll take that as progress."

Before they could continue, Elena approached.

"There you are, my dear!"

She embraced Ophelia warmly.

"I'm so happy you came."

"It's lovely to see you again."

Elena linked their arms together.

"You must stay close tonight. There are far too many boring businessmen here."

Ophelia smiled.

"I'll do my best."

As the evening continued, Ethan was pulled away by several guests.

"Five minutes," he promised.

"I'll survive."

"You'd better."

He disappeared into the crowd.

Left alone, Ophelia wandered toward a display of antique paintings.

She studied one quietly.

Then...

She noticed someone standing beside her.

An elderly man.

Neatly dressed.

Holding a walking cane.

Without looking at her, he spoke.

"Beautiful painting."

"It is."

"They say every masterpiece hides a secret."

Ophelia glanced at him.

"And every secret?"

He smiled faintly.

"...Eventually asks to be found."

Before she could respond, he slipped something into her hand.

A small ivory-colored envelope.

Then he walked away.

"Sir!"

She turned to follow him.

But within seconds...

He had vanished into the crowd.

Ophelia looked down at the envelope.

There was no name.

No address.

Only three handwritten words.

For April Hayes.

Her heart stopped.

No one...

No one should know that name.

She slowly looked up.

Somewhere inside the crowded hall...

Someone knew exactly who she really was.
