Behind the wedding veil,The Dairy of April

34:An Unexpected Encounter

An Unexpected Encounter

The following afternoon, Ophelia stood inside the Crescent Art Gallery, studying a newly arrived collection.

A large abstract painting dominated the room, its bold strokes of blue and gold drawing a small crowd.

"What do you think?"

The gallery owner, Mrs. Davenport, walked up beside her.

"It's... complicated," Ophelia replied.

Mrs. Davenport laughed.

"That's exactly what the artist hoped people would say."

Before Ophelia could answer, the gallery doors opened.

Ethan stepped inside.

He wasn't alone.

A man in his early thirties walked beside him, dressed in a tailored navy suit. His sharp features and confident stride made him stand out immediately.

Ethan spotted Ophelia and smiled.

"There you are."

She returned the smile as they approached.

"I didn't know you were coming."

"It was a last-minute decision." He turned to the man beside him. "I wanted to introduce you to someone."

Ophelia's heartbeat remained steady, though every instinct became alert.

"This is my brother, Nathan."

Nathan extended his hand.

"Nice meeting you again Ophelia."

His voice was calm, polite... almost too polished.

She accepted the handshake.

"It's nice to meet you."

For a brief second, their eyes met.

Nathan smiled.

But something about that smile felt rehearsed.

Not fake.

Controlled.

He released her hand.

"Ethan has mentioned you quite a few times."

Ophelia glanced at Ethan.

"I didn't realize I was such a popular topic."

Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed.

"My grandmother keeps asking about you."

Nathan chuckled.

"She likes you already."

"I hope that's a good thing."

"It is," Nathan replied.

"She doesn't warm up to people easily."

Ophelia made a mental note.

Nathan observed people carefully.

Every word he spoke seemed calculated.

The gallery owner interrupted them.

"Mr. Ashford, the sculpture you reserved has arrived."

Nathan excused himself.

"I'll be right back."

As he walked away, Ophelia watched him from the corner of her eye.

His posture was relaxed.

His expression unreadable.

If she hadn't spent years in military intelligence, she would have thought he was simply another wealthy businessman.

But she noticed the details.

He constantly scanned the room.

He never stood with his back to an entrance.

And every reflective surface—a glass display, a polished frame—seemed to serve as another set of eyes.

Interesting.

"You've gone quiet," Ethan said.

"I'm observing."

"Observing my brother?"

"And everyone else."

He smiled.

"I forget sometimes that you notice everything."

She gave him a playful look.

"That's because you don't."

"I noticed you."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Ophelia laughed softly.

"You recover from awkward moments surprisingly well."

"I try."

Across the gallery, Nathan admired the sculpture.

Without turning around, he spoke quietly.

"How long are you going to watch me?"

Ophelia blinked.

"I beg your pardon?"

He turned, smiling as though nothing unusual had happened.

"I could feel your eyes on me."

She smiled politely.

"Occupational habit."

"And what occupation is that?"

She had prepared for questions like this.

"I consult for private art collectors."

Nathan nodded slowly.

"Interesting."

There was a pause.

"I hope we'll see each other again."

"I'm sure we will."

As Nathan walked away, Ophelia's instincts stirred.

She couldn't explain why.

He had done nothing suspicious.

Said nothing threatening.

Yet something about him made her feel that he was a man who rarely revealed what he was truly thinking.

Later that evening, Nathan sat alone in his office.

His assistant entered.

"Sir?"

Nathan didn't look up from the file in his hands.

"The woman from the gallery..."

"Yes?"

"Should we look into her?"

Nathan closed the folder.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"No."

He leaned back in his chair.

"But keep an eye on anyone who gets too close to this family."

The assistant nodded.

"Understood."

Nathan looked out the window at the city lights.

"Sometimes..."

"The most dangerous people are the ones who appear the most ordinary."
