From Ashes To Scales

44 – Uncharted territory

After six grueling days and nights at sea, the sight of land brought an overwhelming sense of relief. Ephiria, shrouded in mist and mystery, finally loomed on the horizon, its dark silhouette a welcome break from the endless expanse of ocean. The tales of ancient horrors whispered among the crew had kept everyone on edge, their fear palpable as they refused to approach the shore any closer. The rowboat they provided us felt more like a lifeline to salvation than a simple means of transport, the only thing separating us from whatever unknown dangers lay ahead.

The salty breeze filled my lungs as we piled into the small boat, our gear packed tightly around us. I took the oars, my muscles protesting after days of inactivity, and began the slow process of guiding us toward the uncharted island. The waves slapped against the boat in a rhythmic, almost hypnotic pattern, a constant reminder of how isolated we were out here in this vast, uncaring sea.

As we neared the shore, a strange mix of anticipation and unease settled over me. Ephiria was massive, almost as big as Honshu back in Japan, yet completely unknown to anyone we had met. Who knew what awaited us beyond the beach? The air felt thick with an unspoken tension, as if the island itself was watching us, waiting.

Finally, the boat scraped against the sand, and I was the first to step out, boots sinking into the soft, untouched ground. The rest followed, each of us scanning our surroundings, taking in the eerie quiet of the place. No sounds of birds, no insects—just the relentless waves and the whisper of the wind through the distant trees. The silence was unnerving, as if the island was holding its breath, waiting to see what we would do.

"Finally, solid ground," I muttered, trying to shake off the unease creeping up my spine. The feeling of the earth beneath my feet was both comforting and disconcerting, a stark reminder that we were no longer adrift but still far from safe.

Before I could gather my thoughts, a loud thump drew my attention. I turned to see Leona, the once-mighty Sword Saintess, sprawled out on the sand like a shipwreck survivor. She clung to the ground as if it were the only thing keeping her alive, her face buried in the sand.

"Oh, thank the gods! Blessed, blessed land! I never thought I'd be so happy to see you!" she exclaimed between exaggerated kisses to the sand. "I swear, if I never have to see another wave again, it'll be too soon!"

I couldn’t help but chuckle, despite the tension. Leona, who had faced countless enemies with unwavering courage, had been completely undone by the ocean. The irony wasn’t lost on any of us. Rusalka snickered beside me, her green skin flushed with amusement as she elbowed Rose.

"Seems like the great former Sword Saintess has finally found her match. Who knew the ocean could bring her to her knees?" she teased, her voice laced with playful sarcasm.

Rose smirked, her eyes dancing with amusement as she watched Leona’s pitiful display. "She’s been green the entire trip. I’m surprised she’s still got the strength to cling to the ground like that," she quipped, crossing her arms as she looked down at the former warrior with an air of superiority.

I shook my head, a smile creeping onto my face despite the situation. "Come on, Leona," I said, extending a hand to help her up. "We need to gather our provisions and plan our next steps."

Reluctantly, Leona released her death grip on the sand and took my hand, staggering to her feet with a groan. "You can plan all you want, but I’m not getting back on a boat anytime soon," she muttered, her voice laced with determination and dread.

Once we were all on our feet, we began unpacking our supplies, laying everything out on the beach in an organized fashion. I made sure everything was accounted for—food, water, weapons, and magical tools—while Rose meticulously checked our medical supplies. Saphira and Rusalka focused on the magical items and scrolls we’d brought along, ensuring nothing had been damaged during the voyage. The routine work helped to calm my nerves, the familiar tasks grounding me in the face of the unknown.

Now that it was just us, I activated my dimensional storage, storing the excess items to lighten our load. Saphira took this opportunity to shed her human disguise, her true form emerging in a swirl of magic. Her pink skin glinted in the faint light, and her eyes glowed with an otherworldly power. Although little is known about Ephiria, it does have a population, and in theory, all races should be present here. Who knows, there might even be new races that aren't even found on the mainland. If we encounter someone, it's advised that they see our true selves to not raise any suspicions. This was Saphira’s advice. Hiding behind a spell might backfire and make people distrust us.

With our provisions confirmed and gear ready, I spread out a rough map of Ephiria on the sand, more of a sketch than anything. We had thoroughly gone through a proper map during the journey, so just doodling in the sand was enough for now.

"Ephiria is huge," I began, pointing to the rough outline I had drawn. "We can’t just wander aimlessly. We need a plan if we want to survive here."

"Do we even know what we’re looking for?" Rusalka asked, frowning as she studied the map. Her voice held a hint of anxiety, her usual confidence faltering in the face of the unknown. "This island is uncharted for a reason. We could be walking into anything."

"That’s the problem," Saphira added, her tone thoughtful and measured. "We know there’s something powerful here—ancient magic, creatures, who knows what else. But without any real information, we’re going in blind. We know there should be settlements and perhaps even proper towns… but finding them might be a challenge."

"Then we scout," I decided, the weight of leadership settling on my shoulders. "We start with the outskirts, move inland as we gather more information. Rose, you’ll lead the effort to find any medicinal plants or magical herbs we can use. Keep your eyes peeled for anything unusual. Saphira, you and Rusalka focus on finding any sources of magic or unusual energy. Leona and I will handle any threats we encounter."

Leona groaned, clearly still recovering from her ordeal, but she nodded in agreement. "Fine. As long as it’s on solid ground, I’m in," she muttered, still pale from the journey but resolute.

With the plan set, we packed up our supplies and prepared to venture into the heart of Ephiria. The island was massive, its secrets hidden beneath a blanket of mist and shadow. As I looked out over the jungle that awaited us, I felt a sense of resolve harden within me. We had come too far to turn back now. Whatever awaited us on this island, we would face it together.

But even as we took our first steps inland, a nagging feeling tugged at the back of my mind. Ephiria was a land of mystery and danger, and we were outsiders, intruders in a place that did not welcome us. The silence was unnerving, the lack of life around us almost unnatural. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched, that something—or someone—was aware of our presence.

We moved cautiously, our eyes and ears alert for any signs of danger. The trees loomed overhead, their branches twisting and gnarled, casting long shadows across the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a stark contrast to the salty breeze of the ocean. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, set my heart racing.

And yet, there was a thrill in the uncertainty, a sense of adventure that I couldn’t deny. This was what we had trained for, what we had prepared for. Together, we would uncover the secrets of Ephiria, face its challenges, and come out stronger on the other side.

Whatever awaited us, we were ready.
