From Ashes To Scales

42 – Rusalka and Rose

~Rusalka’s POV~

In just two days, the ship was ready, and all the necessary provisions were made to take us to Ephiria. We gave our farewells to mister Alistair. His daughter felt sad that she lost her playmates, but overall was thankful that her life was saved.

As we set sail, the vast expanse of the ocean stretched out before us, a seemingly endless blue horizon meeting the sky. The gentle rocking of the ship, the salty tang of the sea air, and the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the hull created a sense of both excitement and tranquility. It was a new experience for many of us, a mix of awe and the subtle fear of the unknown.

The first day was exhilarating. The wind filled the sails, and the ship cut through the water with ease. I could see the crew moving efficiently about their tasks, a well-oiled machine dedicated to ensuring our safe passage. The sun set in a blaze of colors, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. As night fell, the stars emerged, a glittering canopy above us, making the sea feel even more boundless.

However, the journey wasn't entirely smooth. The constant motion of the ship took its toll on some of us. Leona, unable to stand the constant swaying, locked herself in her room, preferring isolation to the relentless movement of the ocean. Meanwhile, I struggled with seasickness. On the third day, I wasn't feeling well and decided to go below deck. As I descended into the dimly lit hold, I found Rose counting some of our money, the soft clinking of coins a steady rhythm in the quiet space.

Rose glanced up, noticing my discomfort. "Rusalka, come here," she called out.

Rose can be very scary, so I hesitated, but Rose's firm voice came again. "I said, come here."

Reluctantly, I walked over, my steps slow and unsure. Rose reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder, casting a spell that sent a soothing warmth through my body, easing my stomach pain almost instantly.

"Better?" Rose asked, her tone softer now.

I nodded, surprised by the gentleness in Rose's eyes. "Yes, thank you. I didn't realize you could do that."

Rose smirked. "There's a lot you don't know about me, pipsqueak.”

"Where are the others?" she asked, turning her attention back to the coins.

"Magnus and Saphira are on deck, training. He's learning hand-to-hand combat. Leona... well, she's locked herself in her room. She can't stand the ocean."

Rose chuckled softly. "Poor Leona. The sea isn't for everyone." She continued counting the coins, her fingers deftly sorting through the gold and silver.

I watched her for a moment before curiosity got the better of me.

"Rose, why do you love money so much? I mean, you're always counting it or talking about it. What happened to you?"

Rose's expression darkened slightly, her fingers pausing over the coins. She took a deep breath, then began to speak.

"I didn't have the easiest childhood. My parents... they weren't kind. My father was an abusive drunk, and my mother, well, she turned a blind eye to everything. From a young age, I realized that power was the only thing that could protect me. However, not everyone is blessed with power like Magnus has. Or even Leona. I soon discovered that there is another form of power I can tap into. Money. Money is power."

I listened intently, my discomfort forgotten as Rose continued. "When I was old enough, I ran away and started fending for myself. I did what I had to survive. Eventually, I found my way into the world of adventuring. It was dangerous, but it paid well. However, I soon discovered that joining the Church of Light offered more security and, honestly, better pay."

"But... why the Church of Light?" I asked, genuinely curious.

Rose's eyes softened. "Because it gave me a purpose, something more than just surviving. I could help people, and in return, they would donate. Of course… I also could dissect those that annoyed me. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. And besides, the church provided protection and resources I could never have had on my own."

I nodded slowly, understanding a bit more about the complex woman before me.

"I guess you're not as scary as you seem."

Rose chuckled, a rare sound. "Don't be so sure about that, pipsqueak. They didn't call me 'Bloody Rose' for nothing. Now, go get some rest. We have a long journey ahead of us, and you'll need your strength."

I gave a small smile and headed back to my quarters, feeling a newfound respect for Rose. As the ship continued its journey to Ephiria, the bond between our party members grew stronger, forged in the crucible of shared experiences and the open sea.

Meanwhile, Saphira took it upon herself to train Magnus in hand-to-hand combat. On the deck of the ship, with the salty breeze in their faces, she taught him techniques to become a more effective close-range magic caster. Their lessons were grueling but invaluable. I knew that to survive in this world, Magnus had to be versatile, and Saphira’s rigorous training was a step in the right direction. I also need to do my best to support my master!

"Saphira, do you really think this will help me in battle?" I heard Magnus ask, wiping sweat from his forehead as I passed by on my way back to my quarters.

"Absolutely," she replied with a confident smile. "A close-range magic caster must be adaptable. If enemies get too close, you need to be able to defend yourself."

Magnus nodded, appreciating her wisdom and determination. Despite the hardships, our time at sea was proving to be an opportunity for growth and deeper bonds within our group.

As I lay in my hammock that night, the gentle rocking of the ship now more comforting than nauseating, I thought about Rose's story and the determination in Magnus' eyes during his training. We were all here for different reasons, but our paths had converged on this ship, bound for Ephiria and whatever challenges awaited us there. The journey was far from over, but with companions like these by my side, I felt ready to face whatever came next.

The following days passed in a blur of training sessions, shared meals, and quiet moments under the starlit sky. I found myself growing more accustomed to the sea, and even Leona eventually emerged from her cabin, albeit reluctantly, to join us on deck. Our camaraderie deepened as we navigated the vast ocean, each of us finding our place within the group.

Finally, after six days and six nights on the open water, the outline of Ephiria appeared on the horizon. The anticipation was palpable as we prepared to disembark, our hearts set on the adventures and trials that awaited us. The sea had tested us, but it had also brought us closer together, and as we stepped onto solid ground once more, we knew that whatever lay ahead, we would face it as a united front.
