Chapter 373: The Strongest Competitor
Since their trains were departing around the same time, Wang Chenning and Wang Chongjiu went to the train station together. Lu Yuanshan personally drove them.
A large crowd had gathered to see Wang Chongjiu off. Luo Yuqing, Yang Xiaofei, Yang Xiaofu, and Yang Xiaodong were all there, along with a group of leaders from various schools and hospitals.
Of course, Wang Chenning hadn't wanted these women to come, but since they were there to see off Wang Chongjiu, there was nothing he could do to stop them.
Thankfully, Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian were with him. Otherwise, Wang Chenning wouldn't have known how he was going to get Zhao Xiao'an out of Yandu.
Zhao Xiao'an was a sharp woman. She knew that if she left with Wang Chenning, it would definitely cause an unpleasant scene.
So, instead of boarding with Wang Chenning at Yandu South Station, she went ahead and got onto the platform by herself.
Yang Xiaofei, Yang Xiaofu, and Luo Yuqing all wondered why Zhao Xiao'an hadn't come to the send-off, but they didn't dwell on it.
Wang Chenning only found out what she had done when she told him on the way to the station.
He let out a long sigh of relief.
He had already made up his mind. 'Next time I travel, I'm definitely not making such a big deal out of it.'
Before boarding the train, Wang Chongjiu gave Wang Chenning a few words of advice, asking him to come home and stay for a few days soon. He told him not to let his new life cause a rift with his old one.
Wang Chenning agreed.
Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian hadn't seen Zhao Xiao'an in the waiting hall and were wondering where she was. They were surprised to find her already in her seat when they boarded the train.
Li Fuzhen immediately understood the situation. Li Yanxian also figured it out, and couldn't help feeling a little resentful.
"You're not mad I didn't see your grandfather off, are you?" Zhao Xiao'an asked with a grin as Wang Chenning approached. "Did they ask about me?"
"Everyone knows you had a last-minute interview assignment and were worried you'd be late, so you went straight to the train!" Wang Chenning plopped down next to Zhao Xiao'an, teasing her with a grin. "But if you treat me to a feast when we get to Qiantang, then I'll forgive you!"
"That's the easy part!" Zhao Xiao'an agreed readily. "How about we have dinner at Zhiwei Restaurant? I love their shaomai and crab roe buns. The wontons are delicious too."
Wang Chenning naturally had no objections, and neither did Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian, who weren't familiar with the local cuisine of Qiantang.
Zhao Xiao'an and Wang Chenning were both chatterboxes, and with Li Yanxian's Chinese being quite good, the atmosphere quickly lightened up.
Lately, Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian had been communicating with each other in Chinese, so Li Fuzhen's language skills had improved greatly. She could now understand most of the conversation between the other three.
Seeing Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian both conversing in Chinese, Wang Chenning felt quite pleased with himself.
He secretly recorded a video of Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian speaking Chinese with him and posted it on Weibo.
"More than a thousand years ago during the Tang Dynasty, Huaxia was the center of the world, and Chang'an was the cosmopolitan metropolis everyone flocked to. People of that era yearned for Han culture; they took pride in adopting Han customs, learning the Han language, and observing Han rituals. Mastering the square-block characters was an essential skill—without it, you couldn't join the true elite.
Yet today, many of our own people like to pepper their speech with foreign words, as if to prove they are a cut above the rest.
But I dare to declare today that as Huaxia's national power grows, our square-block characters and the Han language will earn ever-greater respect from the world. More people will come to love Huaxia culture, to love the poetry of the Tang and the lyrics of the Song. I am willing to devote my life to the revival and promotion of Han culture.
I believe that one day, friends from all over the world will be able to communicate fluently in Chinese and write using our square-block characters."
The video Wang Chenning posted was beautifully shot. It captured Li Yanxian speaking Chinese with great proficiency, as well as Li Fuzhen painstakingly choosing her words and carefully enunciating to make herself understood.
His post immediately attracted the attention of countless people.
Many were amazed by Li Yanxian's beauty, Li Fuzhen's dignified grace, and the fluency with which they spoke Chinese.
Even more were astonished and impressed by Wang Chenning's passionate devotion to Han culture, and moved by his resolve.
Within ten-odd minutes, the post had garnered over a hundred thousand likes and twenty thousand comments and shares, rocketing to the top of the trending charts.
Seeing his post trend so quickly, Wang Chenning pinned his own reply to the top: "Excellence will always be admired. Han culture has always been outstanding, and with our nation's growing strength, its brilliance becomes even more apparent. It will certainly become one of the world's most widely spoken and geographically widespread languages—one that our brothers and sisters everywhere are most eager to learn.
Once you learn the square-block characters, you can understand the records left by our Huaxia ancestors from thousands of years ago and get a glimpse into their lives. Most of the world's other languages have lost this ability. I hope that through this post, through our shared script and its classical beauty, you and I—wherever you are in the world—can become friends."
Zhao Xiao'an immediately shared Wang Chenning's post with her own comment: "Look at Teacher Wang, conquering foreign beauties with his charm! I'm feeling a little twinge of jealousy. What's a girl to do?"
Li Fuzhen and Li Yanxian also quickly saw the post.
Li Fuzhen didn't mind, but Li Yanxian was not pleased.
"Wang Chenning, what is the meaning of this?" she demanded, shoving her phone in his face. "You've brought a whole army of trolls to attack me. Don't you think that's going a little too far?"
"It's nothing!" Wang Chenning chuckled. "You get used to the hate after a while. As long as you can surprise our countrymen down the line, they'll forgive your past 'mistakes'—if you can even call them that. In fact, they'll end up liking you even more to make up for misunderstanding you now!"
"Hmph!" Li Yanxian rolled her eyes before typing out a reply on his post: "Our dear Teacher Wang can actually speak fluent Korean, but he insists that since we're in Huaxia, we should speak the language of Huaxia. What can you do but follow local customs? And to be honest, I quite like Han culture and want to become more proficient in the language, so I'm not about to pass up such a great learning opportunity. It's just our luck that Teacher Wang is an expert in everything!"
She also attached a selfie—a very flattering one, of course, that was flawlessly retouched.
With Li Yanxian, the star of the video, making an appearance and posting a photo, users immediately swarmed her comment.
Li Yanxian hadn't even had a Weibo account before; she'd only just registered after meeting Wang Chenning and hadn't posted anything yet.
But the moment her verified account posted something, her popularity exploded.
"Yanxian, you're so beautiful! It was love at first sight!"
"Has anyone else noticed how good Li Yanxian and our Teacher Wang look together? A truly gorgeous couple."
"Suddenly I'm worried for our girl Zhao Xiao'an! A powerful rival has appeared!"
"If Li Yanxian and Zhao Xiao'an fought over Teacher Wang, who do you think would win?"
"Can't wait to see them have a catfight over Teacher Wang!" (This comment was followed by a string of emojis indicating it was a joke.)
Seeing these replies, Li Yanxian looked at Zhao Xiao'an with a sly smile. "Xiao'an, a lot of people want to see us fight over Wang Chenning. Should we give them what they want?"
The question startled Zhao Xiao'an, who immediately shot back, "You want to be Wang Chenning's girlfriend, too?"
Li Yanxian leaned in close and whispered in Zhao Xiao'an's ear, "If you marry him, would you mind if I was his girlfriend?"
"..."
