Chapter 221: A Fulfilling Day
They walked slowly along a path lined with sycamore trees, streetlights casting dappled light and shadows upon them.
The night breeze stirred the leaves, making a soft RUSTLE. The natural white noise was exceptionally soothing.
There was little talk, only the sound of their soft footsteps on the path and their clearly audible breaths.
The unspoken affection between them flowed quietly in the night, more intimate and moving than any confession.
They continued walking until they were downstairs from her apartment, where a warm yellow motion-sensor light cast its glow upon them.
Chen Mo stopped walking. Su Yuqing turned to face him, and the light from the entryway illuminated her limpid eyes, clearly mirroring his reflection within them.
"I’m actually a little tired after a full day of fun," Su Yuqing said, a gentle smile on her face and a softness in her voice.
"It’s good to be tired from having fun. You sleep more soundly that way," Chen Mo replied with a smiling nod, his gaze lingering on her face as if to etch this very moment into the bottom of his heart.
Once they were back home, they both looked utterly spent and collapsed onto the sofa together.
Their eyes met by chance, and they couldn’t help but exchange a smile at the languid state they were both in.
"It’s surprisingly comfortable, just slumping around like this," Chen Mo said with a smile.
Su Yuqing hummed softly in agreement. They fell silent, just lying side by side on the spacious sofa like two vines, wilted by the sun but unwilling to part.
The only light in the living room came from a single, warm yellow floor lamp. Its light spread out lazily, tracing their silhouettes with a soft halo.
The faint RUSTLE of the sycamore leaves outside filtered through the glass, making the room seem all the more tranquil.
The day’s excitement and fatigue slowly receded like an ebbing tide, leaving behind a profound weariness in their bodies and a heavy, overflowing sweetness in their hearts.
Su Yuqing turned her head slightly, her gaze landing on Chen Mo’s equally relaxed profile.
His eyes were closed, his breathing even and deep. His usual composure, and the sharpness he sometimes revealed, was now replaced by an unguarded softness.
His eyelashes cast faint shadows beneath his eyes, and a barely perceptible curve played on his lips, as if he were immersed in a pleasant dream.
As she watched him, Su Yuqing’s heart inexplicably skipped a beat, and then it felt as though it were being steeped in warm water, cozy and content.
She shifted her body, quietly and carefully, moving just a little closer to him until her shoulder was barely brushing against his arm.
Through the thin fabric of her clothes, she could feel the warmth radiating from his body. This warmth gave her an immense sense of security, as if a drifting boat had finally found a peaceful harbor.
Chen Mo seemed to sense her subtle approach. His arm moved slightly, but he didn’t open his eyes. He simply and naturally lowered the arm that was resting on the armrest, placing it in the narrow gap between their bodies.
The back of his hand unintentionally brushed against Su Yuqing’s fingers, which were dangling at her side.
That warm touch was like a small pebble tossed into a calm lake, sending ripples spreading through Su Yuqing’s heart.
Her fingertips trembled slightly, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, like a small bird drawn to the warmth, she gently and tentatively pressed the pads of her fingers against the back of his hand.
The instant their skin touched, a tiny jolt of electricity seemed to shoot through the point of contact.
Chen Mo’s eyelashes fluttered almost imperceptibly, but he kept his eyes closed. His previously relaxed fingers curled—ever so slowly, as if treasuring the moment—to gently enclose Su Yuqing’s daring little hand in his palm.
This subtle, wordless gesture struck the heart more profoundly than any confession.
Su Yuqing’s heart was instantly filled with immense sweetness and security, and a blush quietly crept up her cheeks.
She didn’t pull her hand away, instead letting her fingers be enveloped by his large, warm, dry hand, feeling its firm yet gentle pressure.
She closed her eyes again, the corners of her lips curving into a sweet, contented smile.
An unprecedented sense of tranquility and belonging completely enveloped her.
In that moment, time seemed to stretch on forever.
Their weary bodies found complete relaxation on the comfortable sofa, while their two young hearts, in this silent embrace and intertwining of fingers, felt each other’s presence and the unspoken thrill between them.
A silent affection flowed through the air, warmer than the lamplight, more tender than the night.
An unknown amount of time passed before the honk of a car from a late-night returnee outside broke the utter tranquility.
Chen Mo finally opened his eyes slowly. They were clear and held a gentle smile.
He tilted his head slightly, looking at Su Yuqing, whose eyes were still closed but whose cheeks were flushed. He asked softly, "Are you hungry? I think there are two packs of wontons in the fridge."
Only then did Su Yuqing open her eyes. Meeting his smiling gaze, she felt her face grow even hotter and quickly nodded. "Mm... a little."
"I’ll go cook them."
"Let me do it," Su Yuqing said, immediately starting to get up.
"No need. It’s Saturday, so your work is paused. Right now, this is just a family dinner. No one’s required to do anything."
As Chen Mo spoke, he went to sit up, but the hand holding Su Yuqing’s fingers still hadn’t let go. Instead, as if reluctant, his fingertips gently caressed the back of her hand before he finally released his grip.
This tiny gesture made Su Yuqing’s heart tremble once more.
The phrase "family dinner," in particular, made her heart swoon.
Chen Mo stood up, stretched his slightly stiff limbs, and headed for the kitchen.
The light from the refrigerator cast a soft glow on him as he rolled up his sleeves with clean, efficient movements.
Su Yuqing didn’t get up immediately. She remained curled up on the sofa, watching his tall, busy back in the kitchen.
The sound of the running faucet and the light clatter of pots and bowls sounded exceptionally heartwarming on this quiet night.
She watched Chen Mo skillfully boil the water and put in the wontons, occasionally stirring the pot gently with a spoon as rising white steam veiled his profile.
The scene couldn’t have been more ordinary, yet it sketched out the silhouette of something called "home" in her heart.
A strong desire to make this moment last long into the future grew silently within her heart.
Soon, two steaming, fragrant bowls of wontons were served on the small dining table.
"Careful, it’s hot," Chen Mo said, handing a pair of chopsticks to Su Yuqing before sitting down across from her.
They sat facing each other, eating their simple late-night snack.
The wontons had thin skins and generous fillings. They were savory and delicious, and the warmth spread from their stomachs throughout their entire bodies.
Neither of them said much. They would occasionally look up to meet each other’s eyes and exchange a knowing smile. The air was filled with the aroma of food and a silent tenderness.
"Today was so fulfilling," Su Yuqing said, putting down her spoon. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Chen Mo, a contented smile on her lips.
In truth, the word "fulfilling" on her lips could easily have been replaced by "happy" or "blissful."
