I handed over the items from our underground journey before Official Mage Pretel.
Ruby remained by my side.
Besides the objects required by the mission, we had also brought back two heads of outlaw acolytes.
Both were Consolidated Level 3 Acolytes.
— Not bad!
— Not bad at all!
Pretel looked at the two heads.
— You have only visited the Subterranean World twice, and you have already brought back two heads.
— Indeed, you possess a magical ability that adapts perfectly to the Subterranean World.
— Boy, you have a bright future.
— I really have faith in you.
Then he pointed at the heads.
— Now tell me.
— What kind of reward do you want to exchange them for?
My expression remained calm.
Inside, however, that question immediately brought my mind back to the last mission.
And, most importantly, to my basilisk golem that had been destroyed.
That still irritated me deeply.
Because of that, I needed a new golem, unfortunately I couldn’t continue completely hiding my ability to build golems.
— I want a magical spiritual core.
— Preferably one of the Earth element.
— And it needs to be at the Pseudo-Mage level.
Pretel extended his hand.
— Two heads mean two cores.
A small spatial rift appeared before him.
It was approximately the size of a bowl.
Pretel simply placed the two heads inside it.
Then he took out two objects.
Two Earth-element spiritual cores.
Both glowed intensely.
He threw them in my direction.
I caught both.
Pretel simply nodded.
Then he turned around and left.
And walked away as if that were the most trivial thing in the world.
The rest of the team remained standing there.
A group of people looking at one another without knowing exactly what to say.
I looked at Lyra.
I gave a small nod.
Then I grabbed Ruby by the arm and we returned to my residence.
The last journey had made one thing very clear to me.
I was still weak.
Ruby had realized that as well.
Because of that, over the following days, the two of us began working separately on our own deficiencies.
I needed to strengthen my body.
My mana.
And my Golems.
Besides that, I began consuming a blood mana potion every three to five days.
The sensation wasn’t pleasant.
But the results were clear.
My mana increased little by little.
As for the two Earth-element spiritual cores...
It didn’t take long for them to cease being cores.
I transformed them into two new black stone basilisks.
Ruby had noticed a rather serious deficiency during our last battle, her magical resistance was weak.
She could survive absurd physical injuries thanks to her bloodline.
Because of that, she spent an enormous amount of magical crystals to buy a pair of enchanted blades.
They were two magical melee combat blades.
The blades on the left hand possessed a bleeding effect.
The blades on the right hand added a stunning effect.
It was a perfect combination for Ruby.
During a battle, she could inject her blood elemental energy directly into the blades.
The weapons were connected to a kind of glove.
When I saw the set for the first time, an image appeared in my mind.
Wolverine.
A character from my previous world who used similar blades.
Besides the blades, she also began looking for ways to increase her magical resistance.
Training naturally would take far too long.
So she bought magical items that granted additional resistances.
A ring capable of providing resistance against fire, for example, could make an enormous difference.
If Ruby had managed to get something like that before crossing that damn blue fire web...
Maybe she wouldn’t have ended up looking like a piece of charcoal.
And, to make her shopping easier...
I had handed my magical crystal card to her.
It was a mistake.
A terrible mistake.
Because Ruby discovered that she had access to a fortune and spent a lot, just thinking about it made my heart ache, but it was too late to turn back now.
While Ruby was destroying my fortune somewhere in the Tower, I was sitting in my room.
Raticati was standing before me.
The little rat still had his usual appearance.
The only difference was the object around his neck.
A magical collar.
There were several arrays engraved across its surface.
It was an item specially developed to imprison demi-humans who refused to obey their masters’ orders.
Inside the collar was a circle of arrays.
Three small needles gently pierced the user’s neck.
They slowly absorbed his magical energy to maintain the device’s operation.
Any attempt to damage the collar would immediately activate a powerful electrical attack.
And there was another function.
If Raticati moved too far away from me...
The collar would react.
The only way to remove it was through a specific spell, recited in the correct order by the caster who had placed it.
Therefore, after putting the collar on Raticati as soon as we returned, I was finally able to relax.
— Tell me about that Official Mage Lucary!
Raticati remained motionless.
The brown fur on his body trembled slightly.
He raised his head and stared at me for a few seconds.
Then he met my eyes.
Raticati shuddered, quickly lowered his head, and began to speak in a trembling voice.
— Y-yes, master...
The story he told was practically what I expected.
Raticati really was a runaway slave.
And, apparently, he was also one of the luckiest rats that had ever existed in that world.
To understand the whole story, however, it was necessary to go back fifteen years in time.
It all began when Official Mage Lucary decided to conduct some kind of experiment involving souls.
Like any experiment related to the soul, it was extremely dangerous.
Lucary captured a large number of subterranean creatures and used all of them as test subjects.
Most died.
Some during the experiments themselves.
Others after suffering irreversible damage.
Only Raticati survived.
— Do you remember anything about the experiment?
Raticati lowered his ears.
— V-very little, master...
His memory of that period was fragmented.
But, putting together the little information he possessed, I managed to reach a conclusion.
Lucary was probably researching soul transfer.
And that made sense.
If there was a path to achieving immortality, soul transfer would certainly be one of the most important subjects for any Mage interested in defying death.
The problem was that this knowledge was extremely well protected and difficult to access.
After surviving the experiment, Raticati awakened something unexpected.
Intelligence.
Apparently, his mind had been altered by the soul experiment.
Lucary noticed this.
And, instead of killing him...
He turned Raticati into his personal slave.
The objective was simple.
Observe his soul.
Discover what had changed.
And, apparently, out of curiosity, Lucary also began teaching the rat some magical knowledge.
That was how Raticati learned his three spells.
But there was something even more interesting.
Raticati wasn’t a genius.
Even so...
He knew exactly that he was in danger.
From the moment his consciousness awakened, he realized one thing.
Sooner or later, Lucary would probably put him back on an experiment table.
And Raticati didn’t want to find out what would happen afterward.
He carefully chose his spells.
Three abilities perfect for a creature that only wanted to survive.
After hearing everything, I couldn’t help but think that rat really had been blessed by the very Will of the Magical World.
Eleven years serving Lucary patiently.
Until an opportunity finally appeared.
Five years ago.
During a major cleansing mission in the Subterranean World, the Lumentrix Association sent a huge group of Mages to attack Darkgem City.
Lucary was forced to retreat.
He took most of the outlaw Mages with him and descended into even deeper regions.
Raticati was left behind.
Normally, he would have died along with the city.
But, by some miracle...
He managed to escape before the destruction.
After that, he went back to living as a wild creature.
He wandered through the Subterranean World.
And, thanks to his peculiar abilities, he managed to avoid creatures much stronger than himself.
Until he finally found other rats.
He gathered a group.
Built a camp.
And became the leader of a colony.
When he finished telling his story, I remained silent.
It was an impressive story.
But... I wasn’t moved.
I snapped my fingers.
Snap.
— Aaaaaah!
Electricity immediately coursed through the collar.
Raticati’s small body contracted.
Dark smoke began to rise from his fur.
He fell to the ground, trembling.
— M-master...
I crossed my arms.
— Your story is truly inspiring.
My voice remained cold.
— Even pleasant to listen to.
— But tell me one thing.
— What benefits do I get after all the effort I went through to save you?
— Do you think I saved you just to hear a nice story?
— I want results.
...
