Beast Taming: My Beasts Grind, Die, and Respawn

Chapter 251: A Victory Too Expensive

Removing the quills took forty minutes. Glitch stayed awake for the first thirty-eight and slept through the last two under sedation.

"Four penetrating wounds through plating gaps," Doyen said, laying the mineral shafts on a tray. "One behind the shoulder, one behind the right foreleg, and two at the left hip. They’re clean, they came out cleanly, and I’ve closed all four."

"Anything structural?"

"None. No fractures, cracked plates, tendon involvement, or Astral Core disturbance." She stripped off her gloves. "That’s genuinely good news. He’s a very durable animal."

"The throat?"

Doyen brought up the scope image. "Significant strain. I want the wording exact: strain, not lasting damage. He used a maximal burst while already spending everything elsewhere."

"Five to seven days?"

"Five to seven days. Five if the wounds close cleanly and his throat settles by the third day. Longer if either of them gives me a reason." Doyen held Jin’s gaze. "No sparring, no maximal exertion, and absolutely no full-power Acid Breath. I’d rather he didn’t use it at all this week."

"I’ll plan for seven."

Doyen looked toward the sleeping lizard. "He’ll disagree by day three."

"He disagrees now."

"Then neither of you can claim you weren’t warned."

Jin planned for seven days.

The official result arrived the following morning.

[MERIDIAN THIRD-CLASS LADDER]

[Astor, J.: Rank 35 → Rank 30]

[Rook, D.: Rank 30 → Rank 35]

[Regional League qualifier requirement: Top 20]

[Ranking cutoff: 6 weeks]

The reaction was larger than after the Voss match, though nobody treated Jin like a champion. What changed was the quality of the attention. Several students within the Top 20 had watched the recording, and two regarded him in the corridor with the focused expression of people revising a list of possible opponents.

The recording circulated for an obvious reason. A Rank-35 student had beaten a prepared 7-Star beast in a matchup designed to punish his own. The medical footage circulated with it. Anyone studying Jin also saw Glitch stop after the decision, saw four quills protruding from plating seams, and saw Jin reach the arena floor before the crowd had finished reacting.

That kept the attention honest. Some students discussed the preserved lane. Others called it a trade that would fail against an opponent with a second escape. Both interpretations contained enough truth to be useful.

Lysa found him outside Applied Ecology with her notebook already open.

"I counted four penetrations, six other hits, and one full-output Acid Breath," she said. "Did I miss anything?"

"Five to seven days of recovery."

"So you did notice the other half of the match."

"Doyen kept him overnight. Hard to miss."

Lysa tapped her pen once, then glanced at Glitch’s empty place beside him. "Beating a prepared 7-Star with a 6-Star in that matchup is why everyone is watching you. Tell me you aren’t filing another challenge next week."

"I’m not."

"Why not?"

"Two perfect five-place wins only get me to twentieth. Probably more once the board moves, and then I still have qualifiers. None of that matters if Glitch can’t fight."

Lysa closed the notebook. "Good. I was getting tired of giving that speech."

Dalen found him after the final class of the day.

"Post-mortem, if you want one."

"Go ahead."

"I had the sealing volley ready at eight minutes," Dalen said. "I fired it at nine."

"Why wait?"

"The northern corridor. I spent three shots checking whether you wanted me to close it." He adjusted the strap of his bag. "After the Voss match, I expected you to sell me an opening. I was so careful about the false route that I found the real one late. One more line across that diagonal and Glitch had nowhere to go."

"So I didn’t get lucky."

"No. My mistake, and I’d rather own it." Dalen glanced toward the medical wing. "Glitch still had to cross a full spread. Three of my previous opponents broke off from that position. You got him to the lane; staying in it was his part."

"He paid for it."

"And you couldn’t have paid twice. You reached Flint once, after spending Acid Breath, most of Glitch’s stamina, and four wounds. If Flint had reset, you had no second approach."

Jin had reached the same conclusion before the first quill came out.

"I know."

"Then we’re done." Dalen started to leave, then stopped. "I’ll climb back through the other positions. If you want a ranged-control training partner before the qualifiers, ask. I imagine you will."

"I will."

Respect did not make them friends. It made the offer useful, which was enough.

That evening, Jin opened the Rank-25 range and closed it after ninety seconds.

Legally, he could file five places higher. One of the available matchups might even have been beatable. That did not make challenging now a good decision.

The Rook match had required all three of Glitch’s Astral skills. Harden stayed active through too many exchanges. Tremor Sense found the brace without solving the airborne volley. One maximal Acid Breath opened the route and cost a week of throat recovery. Every physical technique Glitch possessed had carried him to Flint once, with nothing left for a second attempt.

The one-Star difference had remained visible for nine minutes.

Jin replaced the five opponent profiles with three training headings.

First came efficiency. Harden had been active during exchanges where Glitch did not need it, and Acid Breath could not remain an all-or-nothing tool.

Second came 7-Star. The Engine could accumulate the development, but Jin had no honest date for when enough would exist or when Glitch’s real body would be safe to receive it.

Third came The Unbroken Line. Glitch had failed before crossing three meters. The compatible burst-movement skill could address the exact moment that had nearly killed their Rank-30 attempt, but only after a long grind whose outcome was not guaranteed by the six-week clock.

Six weeks gave him time to work. It did not make another costly ladder match safer next week.

The cutoff still pressed at him. Waiting carried its own risk: other students could climb, targets could move, and a delayed challenge could leave too few legal jumps. But filing immediately would turn urgency into damage without improving their odds. Jin wrote a review date beside the three headings. He would reconsider the ladder after Glitch was medically clear and after the first measurable gains in efficiency and the trial—not before.

Jin removed the Rank-25 profiles from his active tab and pinned The Unbroken Line in their place.
