Beast Taming: My Beasts Grind, Die, and Respawn

Chapter 216: When the Horizon Moved

Day 5. Engineering repaired anchor face two. Lysa tested it to seventy percent of maximum tension, wrote down the number, and refused to test it higher because she wanted the margin.

Day 4. Jin ran comm triggers with Runner and Volley and found the first real problem, which was volume.

They ran a mock hour with Lysa reporting every disturbed strand, and by minute eleven Jin’s channel was unusable.

"Strand three."

"Strand three again."

"Strand seven, outward."

"Strand three, and I think that’s wind."

"Stop," said Jin. "This doesn’t work."

"I know it doesn’t work, I’m demonstrating it." Lysa’s voice came back dry. "You said you wanted strand numbers on the map. You didn’t say what you wanted on the channel."

They rebuilt it in about twenty minutes and the version they arrived at was three words long.

Strand number. Break direction. Surface crossed or not.

Everything else stayed in her head unless a trigger fired.

Runner’s trigger: move only on an assigned area with a stated time window, report on arrival, report on contact, withdraw on the stated condition without asking.

Volley’s trigger: fire only on marked targets in Lysa’s branch, report ammunition state at fifty percent and at twenty.

"That’s it?" said Volley’s handler.

"That’s it. If I want more I’ll ask, and if I’m asking a lot it means something’s gone wrong."

Day 3. Glitch spent two hours learning exactly where his western reports failed, which meant walking the branch until he could feel the edge coming. By the end of it he stopped on his own at station three, every time, without being told.

Day 2. The fallback route inspection came back clear. Four hundred and sixty meters to the secondary wall gate, no obstructions, two casualty transfer points marked.

Neris passed through the sector once.

"I’m on the adjacent lane," she said. "I’ll be on broader coordination and safety escalation. I’m not going to be standing over you."

"Understood."

"Your boundary is your boundary. If I take something off you it’ll be because command’s moved it, not because I disagreed with you."

The final ward visit was on the last afternoon.

Verrick had Flicker’s file open and went through it without being asked.

"Stable. Respiration in resting range, thermal regulation improving, no decline events in nine days." He tapped the screen. "She stays here for your entire shift. Climate-controlled ward, her cradle, her regulator, her alarm, and me."

"And the linked monitor?"

"You’ll see the readings wherever you are." Verrick looked at him over the display. "Which I’m telling you about because you’ll check it, and I’d rather you check it once an hour than not know how."

Jin checked the regulator connection himself, physically, at the coupling, which Verrick allowed without comment.

Then Flicker was allowed a short supervised walk, because Glitch was there and she had already got up.

She followed him to the doorway, and crossing that much floor took nearly four minutes.

Glitch was slow about leaving. He got to the door and stopped and looked back, and Jin pulled at the bond and got resistance, and then Glitch went two more paces and stopped and looked back again.

Behind him, Flicker walked.

She was better at it than she had been ten days ago and she was still terrible. Her left foot went too far. Her wings came out for balance every third step and stayed out longer each time. She crossed the ward floor at a pace that would have embarrassed a hatchling half her age, with her eyes fixed on the black shape ahead of her, and she did not once look at the cradle.

There was no fire in it. No avatar competence, no basin, no Hawk. Just a recovering bird trying to keep a large lizard in sight.

Jin watched the linked monitor climb.

Respiration up. Thermal climbing steadily and still inside range. Balance degrading — she stopped twice, standing, wings half open, and started again both times.

She reached the doorway. One foot found the threshold, her wings opened, and for one proud second, she stood on the threshold.

"That’s the session," said Verrick.

Glitch turned back immediately and Jin caught him.

No.

The resistance that came back was the strongest Jin had felt from him in weeks, and it was not disobedience. It was an animal being asked to walk away from a smaller one who was visibly struggling to follow him, which was the exact thing Glitch had spent two months refusing to do.

Jin sent him the cradle, Flicker’s rising temperature, and the need to let her turn back.

Glitch held still.

Jin crossed the room and picked Flicker up, which she objected to in a thin exhausted way, and put her in the cradle and checked her temperature by hand and then by monitor.

Then he took off the academy overshirt he had been wearing all afternoon, folded it, and laid it beside her approved bedding where she could reach it.

She turned around twice and settled against it.

He waited until the alarm came back green — thermal down, respiration down, nothing amber anywhere on the panel — before he stood up.

He did not say anything aloud. Human words would have been for him; Flicker would understand whether he came back.

I’m coming back for the shirt, he thought, which was as close as he was willing to get.

Deployment was 0600 the following morning.

Fitted Third-Class armor, which was heavier than the standardized suit and fit properly for the first time in his life. Comms checked twice. Supplies for one shift and no more, because supply runs came through the fallback gate on a schedule.

Lysa counted her web reserve in front of him, out loud, because she wanted him to hear the number.

"Eleven expendable spools. Four load lines. That’s everything and there’s one resupply window at hour six."

"Received."

Runner took the rear standby position at the join. Volley climbed to the protected firing angle on the eastern side, where it could support Lysa without shooting across Glitch’s western line.

Glitch walked out onto the center slab, turned twice, and settled onto it with his chest flat.

The fallback gate sealed behind them at 0614.

Jin stood at the join and looked down a hundred and ten meters of reinforced channel with two ways in, and the map became a place.

"Conditions once," he said on the channel. "Lysa owns the east. Runner moves only on assignment with a time window. Volley fires marked targets only. If command orders E-9 abandoned, we go to the gate — four hundred and sixty meters, no arguments about it on the day."

"Received," said Lysa.

"Received," said Runner.

"Received," said Volley.

He stopped there because nothing else would help.

The air changed at 0731.

Jin felt it as pressure behind the eyes, a thickness that had not been there four minutes earlier, and every beast in the sector reacted before any channel did. Glitch’s whole body came off the slab and locked. The Mireweb Spider abandoned a half-finished line and pulled in against its anchor faces. Runner’s courser started stamping and would not stop.

Then the exterior channels opened all at once, every sector, and the noise on the shared band went from nothing to everything.

Jin looked east, past the low branch, out toward the horizon.

The horizon was moving.

It had a texture to it that ground did not have, a shifting granular quality across kilometers of wasteland, and for about four seconds his brain insisted it was dust or heat distortion. Then it resolved and the resolution was worse.

The sound arrived some time after the sight. Not a roar. A low continuous pressure, like weather.

[ASTRAL TIDE — ONSET CONFIRMED]

[All exterior sectors: active]

[Layered defense: engaged]

Glitch dropped onto the slab and the bond went narrow.

"Contacts," said Jin. "Deep, distant, east and west both. Multiple. Preliminary — I can’t count them and I can’t give you a heading yet."

"Eastern observation confirms surface movement toward the low branch," said the sector feed. "Estimated contact eleven minutes."

"Lysa, boundary’s yours from now. Runner, Volley, hold prepared positions."

Out past the branches, the moving front began separating into routes.
