Chapter 203: Probable, Act on It
Chapter 203: Probable, Act on It
Jin could not make the battlefield less uncertain, so he changed what he did with the information.
"Everyone listen to how I phrase things from here. It’ll matter." He kept his attention on Glitch and the corridor beyond him. "Confirmed means it’s real and you act on it. Probable means it’s my best read and I might be wrong. Noise means ignore it. I’m not going to say confirmed just to sound certain."
"That’s—fine," Anand said, sounding like someone who had not expected a vocabulary briefing in the middle of an exercise.
The northern contact struck again. Jin compared the gap to the previous pulse, waited for another, and found the rhythm unchanged. The same weight arrived from the same direction at the same interval, as regular as a machine turning on a fixed cycle.
The eastern contact behaved differently. It had appeared twice with uneven spacing, shifted between arrivals, and gone silent in between.
Machines repeat. Things deciding where to go don’t.
He tested the idea before trusting it with Karr’s beast. The next northern pulse landed when expected. The eastern contact returned early from a slightly different bearing.
"North is noise," Jin said over the channel. "Confirmed mechanical repeat, fixed interval. East is moving. Probable position is the rubble short of the scaffold. I’m calling it probable because neither I nor the Kite can see it."
"Received," said Neris.
Her screen shifted toward the eastern edge of her own lane. She had acted on his report without pretending it was more certain than he had claimed.
Now Jin needed to do the same.
"Glitch holds the choke. He doesn’t go for the dummy."
The objection came through the bond immediately. The casualty was exposed, everyone was looking toward it, and Glitch’s protective instincts pulled hard in that direction.
Jin pressed one clear image back through the connection: Glitch planted across the narrow route, nothing passing him.
You’re the door. Doors don’t leave.
Glitch lowered his body and held.
"Karr, you’re retrieval. Straight out, take the dummy, straight back on the same line. Don’t improvise."
"Cover?"
"Merren screens her from the east in both directions. Not the north—the north is a machine and it isn’t watching anything." Jin pointed toward the scaffold base. "Anand, close that gap. If the moving contact tries to reposition, that’s where it goes. Stay on it."
They moved.
Karr’s courser shot past the chokepoint, low to the ground and accelerating across the exposed rubble. Merren’s beast followed far enough to spread its haze over the eastern approach, while Anand’s burrower dug into the loose scaffold base and dragged the gap shut behind a rising ridge of broken stone.
The construct emerged from the eastern rubble soon after Karr entered the open. Jin’s probable call had been correct, but it had still been probable when he gave the order. He held on to that distinction.
It lunged after the courser and lost sight of her inside Merren’s haze. Deprived of the moving target, it turned toward the chokepoint.
Glitch was waiting.
The construct struck his shoulder at speed. Glitch absorbed the contact without giving up the route, pivoted only after the impact had committed his opponent, and swept his heavy tail through its legs. The construct tumbled into the rubble and stopped in a configuration that would take time to repair.
Neris’s Kite crossed the edge of Jin’s vision as something struck her neighboring lane. He heard a clipped instruction over the shared channel and resisted the urge to look away from his own route. Neris had told him exactly what would happen if he tried to solve the entire exercise, and Karr was still exposed beyond the haze. Whatever had reached the next lane belonged to the commander standing in it.
Karr’s courser returned through the haze with the casualty dummy secured against its back. She followed the same line out and did not create a second problem for Jin to solve.
Anand’s burrower remained pressed over the scaffold gap. When another construct tried to use it, the sealed route forced it around through the corridor Glitch already controlled.
The route held, and the casualty came back with it.
The end tone sounded a moment later. Karr slowed her courser before removing the dummy, Merren’s screening haze sank toward the floor, and Anand called her burrower away from the sealed gap. Jin checked each beast before looking toward Neris’s lane. None was injured, his route had never opened, and he had not needed to interfere with the sector beside him.
It was the kind of result that looked simple after everyone had survived it. Eleven seconds earlier, simplicity had been unavailable.
Neris conducted the debrief beside the course while the maintenance system reset the constructs behind them.
"Strong pass. One entry in a three-week record. It decides nothing."
"Understood."
"Two observations, and they’re the same observation." She checked her slate. "Your reporting is the best I’ve received from a candidate this cycle. You said confirmed when you knew and probable when you didn’t, and you told me which was which without being asked. I repositioned my own screen on your east call because the label meant something."
"And the eleven seconds."
"You counted them."
"Yeah."
"Then you know." Neris looked up. "In here, the delay cost nothing. Karr still had time. During a Tide, a retrieval team gets one window, and eleven seconds spent upgrading probable to confirmed is eleven seconds of someone standing in the open waiting for your grammar."
She turned the slate far enough for him to see the replay marker. The delay looked worse when reduced to a line on a screen: the casualty exposed, Karr waiting at the chokepoint, and no order moving between them. Nothing had attacked during that gap. A real battlefield would not owe him the same courtesy.
"So decide faster."
"Decide on a probability and keep calling it one. I’m not asking you to guess. Guessing would destroy the thing that makes you worth listening to." She put the slate away. "Sometimes the honest answer is probable, act on it. You have to be able to say the second half."
Jin could not argue with that. She had found a way to turn being careful into something he had to practice faster.
The criticism did not erase the pass, and the pass did not erase the delay. Neris had managed to leave both facts intact, which made the assessment harder to dismiss and more useful than praise would have been.
"Understood."
The academy update reached his slate after he returned to the dormitory.
[Provisional Evaluation 1 — complete]
[Result: strong pass]
[Noted strength: uncertainty labelling; inter-lane reporting]
[Noted weakness: confirmation delay under interference]
[Candidacy status: PROVISIONAL]
[Assignment: undetermined — interior/exterior]
He read the final two lines twice. Nothing had been decided, but he had now proved he could hold a failing route with three strangers and a beast trying to read meaning from noise.
That was the qualification Meridian wanted.
Glitch pushed his head against Jin’s hip, entirely pleased with an exercise in which he had spent most of his time standing still and had hit exactly the right thing.
"Yeah," Jin said, rubbing the heavy plating above his eyes. "You were the door."
