Chapter 57 — The Evaluation
The notice came through official guild channels this time, a formal summons rather than casual conversation, requesting Arlen’s presence at a scheduled evaluation the following week — Garrett having submitted the recommendation shortly after their conversation at the training yard.
"Standard procedure," Garrett explained, when Arlen asked what to expect. "Guild sends a certified evaluator, usually someone from the capital archive’s registry division if the local branch doesn’t have anyone qualified on staff. They measure output, control, stability under pressure. Nothing dangerous, just thorough."
"What happens if I don’t pass?"
"You will," Garrett said, with the flat certainty of a man who didn’t waste words on false reassurance. "I’ve seen what you can do. This is a formality confirming what we already know, not a test you might fail."
The evaluator arrived four days later — a precise, unhurried woman named Instructor Halbrecht, traveling with a modest case of specialized equipment Arlen didn’t recognize, and a manner that reminded him faintly of Petra’s careful, methodical attention to detail.
"Rank E, recommended by Instructor Vane for formal Aura assessment," she said, reviewing a small stack of papers as Arlen settled into the guild’s designated evaluation room, a modest chamber near the training grounds fitted with markings on the floor and walls whose purpose he couldn’t immediately guess. "This shouldn’t take more than an hour, provided you cooperate fully with each request."
"I will."
"Good." She withdrew a small, crystalline device from her case, setting it on a stand a short distance from where Arlen stood. "This measures ambient Aura output. I’ll ask you to demonstrate various levels of control — full release, then progressively finer restraint. Begin whenever you’re ready."
Arlen drew on Enduring Vitality’s familiar warmth, letting it flow outward the way Garrett’s months of training had taught him to properly channel it, and watched Halbrecht’s crystalline device flicker to life with a soft, steady glow.
"Reading confirmed," she said, making a note without looking up. "Sustain that level, please."
He held it steady, the effort considerably more manageable now than it would have been even a few months earlier, and Halbrecht continued through a series of measured requests — increasing output, then decreasing it by careful degrees, testing his control at each threshold with the same patient thoroughness Garrett brought to his own instruction.
"Your control’s notably clean," she observed, partway through the assessment. "Most newly confirmed Awakened struggle with fine gradation this early. You’ve had formal instruction, I take it."
"Four months under Garrett Vane."
"That explains some of it. Not all of it, but some." She made another note, her tone carrying the same professional, unhurried curiosity Garrett had shown weeks earlier. "Your output ceiling is also somewhat higher than typical for someone at your rank and training duration. Not exceptional, but comfortably above average."
Arlen kept his expression carefully neutral, the familiar careful calculation running beneath his composed exterior even through the straightforward mechanics of the test itself.
They moved through the remainder of the evaluation methodically — physical demonstrations of technique, controlled exertion tests that measured his recovery speed, a brief combat simulation against a padded training dummy that let Halbrecht observe how his Aura integrated with actual movement rather than static demonstration alone.
"Final section," Halbrecht said, nearly an hour into the assessment. "Sustained output test. I need you to maintain active Aura channeling for as long as you’re comfortably able, so I can properly document your endurance threshold."
Arlen settled into the familiar warmth, letting it flow steadily rather than in the controlled bursts the earlier tests had demanded, and found himself, as the minutes passed, genuinely curious about his own limits in a way the private testing at his hidden clearing hadn’t quite replicated under this kind of structured observation.
He held the output far longer than he expected to, Halbrecht’s expression shifting gradually from professional neutrality toward something closer to genuine interest as the minutes continued accumulating.
"You can stop," she said finally, after a duration that had clearly exceeded whatever baseline she’d anticipated. "That’s... considerably longer than typical for your rank, Arlen. Your endurance threshold alone would be notable at Rank D, let alone Rank E."
"Is that a problem?"
"Not remotely. Simply unusual." She finished her notations with careful precision. "The assessment’s complete. I’ll compile the full report for guild records, but I can confirm the basic findings now — you’ve formally Awakened Aura, control and output both well above baseline expectations for your training duration and rank."
Something in Arlen’s chest eased at the confirmation, a weight he hadn’t fully realized he was still carrying finally settling into place. Whatever else remained hidden, whatever other careful lies still needed maintaining, this much, at least, was now simply, officially true — documented, verified, beyond any need for further careful deflection.
"Thank you," he said.
"No need for thanks. You did the work; I simply measured it." Halbrecht packed her equipment away with the same brisk efficiency she’d brought to the entire assessment. "The guild will update your official record within the week. You should expect some attention once word circulates — confirmed Awakened status this early in a career tends to draw notice, even at Rank E."
Arlen found Garrett waiting outside once the evaluation concluded, the old instructor’s expression carrying a rare, satisfied warmth.
"Well?"
"Confirmed. Halbrecht said my endurance threshold alone would be notable at Rank D."
Garrett’s weathered face broke into something close to genuine pride. "Told you it was a formality. Come on. This deserves marking properly, even if I’m not one for much ceremony."
They walked together toward the guild hall’s tavern, and Arlen found himself, for the length of that short walk, simply enjoying the uncomplicated satisfaction of an honest accomplishment — real training, genuinely earned, now formally recognized regardless of whatever else remained carefully unspoken beneath it.
He wrote about it that evening, the guild hall’s ordinary noise settling comfortably around him as it so often did now.
Formally Awakened. Aura confirmed, control and endurance both well above baseline for my rank and training duration. Halbrecht didn’t press for explanations beyond Garrett’s instruction, which apparently accounted for enough of the difference that nobody felt the need to look deeper.
Strange, how much lighter this feels than I expected. Months of careful anxiety about exactly this moment, and it resolved itself as simply and cleanly as Garrett always promised it would. Perhaps that’s the pattern I should trust more, going forward — that most people, given a plausible explanation and genuine evidence of hard work behind it, don’t feel the need to dig further than that.
One piece of the truth, properly documented now. The rest stays carefully mine, for however much longer I choose to keep it that way.
He closed the journal, the satisfaction of the day settling comfortably over him, and found himself already thinking ahead toward whatever new opportunities his formal status might open — the promise he’d made himself after Millbrook finally bearing the kind of visible, official fruit that made the whole careful, patient effort feel worthwhile.
