Chapter 109: Off To Fort Aldion
We get closer to the gate, taking notice of multiple carriages coming into the fort itself. One sticks out amongst the rest of them.
It looks like some sort of royalty is coming into the fort today.
"Am I seeing things?" I question.
Niko takes a step forward and places a hand on my shoulder.
"That is definitely real my friend. We are going to be in for some big shit today."
I let out a sigh.
"At least we got to enjoy some peace before going back into the battlefield."
Bump.
Laz lets out a laugh.
"Of course we are going back into the battlefield. That carriage is probably General Corinth who is coming in."
General Corinth? I don't think I ever heard of this man.
He definitely sounds like someone I don't want to be on the bad side of... Especially when everyone looked his way.
"Who is General Corinth?" I question with a ht of confusion in my voice.
"You don't know about General Corinth?!?!"
"I don't."
Even Niko turns his head back to look at me.
"Did I just hear him correctly Laz?" Niko asks.
"Yes. He has never heard of the general."
Don't we have our own General here?
"General Corinth is one of the best slayers out there. Well, he used to be. Now he just manages the frontlines and gives great strategic plans to us."
"Is he really that great?" I ask curiously.
A serious expression emerges on both of their faces as they stare at me.
Laz speaks before Niko can.
"Of course! He is the reason that Aldion has continued to stand for all these years. Otherwise it probably would have fallen ages ago."
"What did he do to prevent it from falling?"
"His plans on how to defend against the attacks were the biggest contribution to their victory."
"A lot of the reason we have the weapons we do now is also because of Corinth," Niko chimes in.
It is actually quite baffling to hear this from the two of them but I guess it was expected at some point or another. I knew someone that great was bound to show up one day.
"I'll look forward to meeting him myself then."
Niko laughs. "I'm sure you'll get the opportunity one day."
Laz also lets out a laugh.
After the laughing dies down we begin to follow the carriages. Eventually they stop right outside of the command building.
I watch as the soldiers exit from the carriages, not long after I see a tall, muscular man with short blonde hair, a bit stubble, and green eyes.
He definitely has the look of a general with how nicely composed he is.
So this is General Corinth. I'm sure he is going to be quite an amazing person to learn from. If he is even willing to show me anything at all when it comes to tactics.
Footsteps suddenly interrupt my train of thought and within a few moments I realize that Onyx is standing in front of me.
"I'm glad you are here Kain. I'll be sending you off to Fort Aldion with a few of the others." Onyx speaks up with a serious tone.
"Why are we going to Fort Aldion?" I question.
"Fort Aldion could use the reinforcements for the time being and it was requested."
"Requested?"
He lets out a sigh.
"Yes. A lot of the slayers here have been recognized by General Corinth so he'd like to have you guys out there temporarily."
I was recognized already? I've barely gotten to do anything significant over this last year... Or at least I don't think so. Our battles have been pretty tame for the most part.
Or could he possibly be referring to the crossroads?
That battle was so long ago that I didn't think it would be something so noteable.
"Do you know what battle we were recognized for?" I ask curiously.
"The battle at the Zameref Cathedral."
Ah. I remember the battle at the cathedral.
It was the first attempt in a long time to try to reclaim some territory from the dragons. Onyx wanted to take the chance to get one of our most important places back.
The Zameref Cathedral.
~I am surprised you remembered that day.
Hard to forget it. We fought for what felt like days.
"Kain?"
"Yes, sorry. I was just remembering that day a bit."
"It was one of our hardest fights in a long time, but don't think your efforts went unnoticed."
It feels nice to know my efforts are being acknowledged by someone I look up to. Onyx really has been quite a role model for me over the last year.
Not that I'd ever admit that to him.
"I'm glad I could help."
"Yeah, it was definitely a big deal."
He looks back towards the command building.
"I'll get ready to go then."
"Good. Just don't do anything stupid if you get sent out to fight Kain," Onyx says with a genuine tone.
"I don't intend to."
With that I make my way over to the gates again where I can already see everyone is waiting for me. Laz, Niko, Sylvia, and a few other slayers.
All of them wave towards me so I quickly make my way over.
"About time," Sylvia teases.
"Yeah, yeah. I was busy talking with Onyx."
"What'd he have to say?"
"He just told me about going to Fort Aldion and that we did a really good job back at the Cathedral."
I hear Niko begin to laugh almost instantly.
"That's really what stuck out to them?" Niko chimes in.
"Apparently."
"I can't believe it. We've had so many other good moments," Niko says with a laugh.
Footsteps approach and everyone goes silent.
"Are you all ready to go?" A man asks with a cold tone.
I turn my head slightly to see a man wearing all black armor with a helmet covering his face completely. He doesn't seem to be anyone I've seen before.
