Chapter 193: I’m afraid I can’t tell you
Meanwhile, an officer took a brief statement from Adrian. After asking a few final questions and making some notes, he gave Adrian a nod before leaving.
The moment the officer was out of earshot, Logan let out a long sigh.
"Boss, you seriously need to stop giving me heart attacks. I’m still too young to die."
Adrian turned toward him and frowned.
"Young?"
"Yes. Young."
"You’re only two years younger than me. How exactly does that make you young?"
Logan’s expression immediately changed.
"Shh!"
He quickly glanced around before lowering his voice.
"Why do you have to say it so loudly? Do you want everyone here to hear our ages?"
Adrian stared at him blankly.
"Why are you embarrassed about your age?"
"Because I still have dreams, Boss."
"What does your age have to do with your dreams?"
"Everything."
Adrian rolled his eyes and turned away.
Despite the way both men looked, neither of them could exactly hide their age forever. They might have been in excellent shape and looked younger than they actually were, but they were certainly not twenty anymore.
Adrian glanced at Logan again.
"Don’t worry. Tomorrow, go and get a full-body check-up."
Logan blinked. "A full-body check-up?"
"Yes."
"Why?" he asked.
"To make sure your heart survived today."
Logan stared at him. "Boss, that is not funny."
"I wasn’t joking."
Before Logan could argue, Adrian’s attention suddenly shifted toward the other side of the venue.
His eyes landed on the girls standing near the dessert counter.
Without another word, he started walking toward them.
Logan was still busy complaining.
"Seriously, how long do you plan on making me run around like this? First, you collapse. Then you suddenly wake up in an ambulance. Then you order me to investigate the guests. And now you’re walking away without even explaining anything!"
Adrian continued walking.
"I’m telling you, Boss, if you keep doing this, I’m resigning."
No response.
"Did you hear me?"
Nothing.
"I’m serious!"
Still nothing.
Logan finally realized Adrian had already walked several steps ahead. His eyes widened.
"Boss?"
Adrian didn’t stop.
"Boss! Where are you going?"
Adrian continued toward the dessert counter as though Logan didn’t exist.
Logan’s jaw dropped. "You can’t just ignore me after I announced my resignation!"
He hurried after him. "Wait for me!"
Adrian glanced back briefly. "Then stop talking and walk faster."
Logan nearly stumbled. "See? This is exactly why I need a raise."
Soon, the two reached the spot where Clara was standing with the girls.
"Sorry for causing you so much trouble, young lady," Adrian said.
Everyone immediately turned their attention toward Lily.
Adrian gave her a sincere smile, and Lily’s cheeks instantly flushed.
He knew he had scared her half to death by pretending to be poisoned. Even though he had assured her afterward that he was completely fine, he still felt that he owed her a proper apology.
"I’m really sorry," he added.
Lily looked at him shyly. She had already been relieved when Adrian had walked back into the venue looking perfectly healthy, but hearing him apologize personally only made her more embarrassed.
"I-It’s okay, Mr. Graham," she stammered, quickly looking away. "As long as you’re healthy, that’s all that matters."
Clara, Hannah, and Silvia exchanged stunned looks.
Lily was blushing.
Actually blushing.
Clara raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
Adrian, meanwhile, seemed satisfied that Lily wasn’t holding a grudge.
Once he was sure she was fine, he turned toward Clara.
"And, Mr. Sterling, I apologize for all the trouble I caused you as well. And for the fact that things didn’t go as we expected."
Clara gave him a skeptical look.
"That’s one way of putting it."
Adrian chuckled awkwardly.
He had honestly believed that, like every other charity event he organized, everything would go smoothly. The guests would arrive, the event would proceed according to schedule, and everyone would leave satisfied.
Instead, they had ended up with a fake poisoning, a mysterious disappearance, an unexpected confrontation, and enough chaos to make the entire evening unforgettable.
Adrian sighed.
"I suppose not everything can go according to plan."
"Apparently not," Clara muttered.
Adrian smiled.
"Still, I suppose a little adventure isn’t always a bad thing."
Clara stared at him.
"Next time, try having your adventure without pretending to die."
Adrian’s smile immediately disappeared. "Fair enough."
Clara noticed the strange look on Adrian’s face and couldn’t help but become curious.
"Mr. Graham, how did you know the cookies were poisoned?" she asked. "And if you knew they were poisoned, why did you eat one? Shouldn’t you have been harmed?"
She had no intention of waiting forever to find out what had actually happened.
Clara already knew Julianna had intended to poison the cookies and make her look responsible in front of everyone. But what she couldn’t understand was how Adrian had managed to eat one of them and walk away completely unharmed.
Adrian scratched his forehead awkwardly.
"Well..."
Clara narrowed her eyes. "Well, what?"
Adrian hesitated for a moment before giving her an awkward smile.
"I think you should ask your husband about that."
The moment he mentioned Dominic, Clara’s expression changed. "Dominic?" Her heart skipped a beat.
Slowly, her gaze shifted across the venue.
Sure enough, Dominic was standing a short distance away, casually speaking with Grace and Jonathan as if nothing unusual had happened.
Clara stared at him.
Why would Adrian tell her to ask Dominic?
"What does Dominic have to do with this?" she asked, turning back to Adrian.
Adrian merely shrugged. "I think he can explain it better than I can."
Clara’s eyes narrowed. "Mr. Graham..."
Adrian gave her an innocent smile. "I’m afraid that’s all I can tell you."
"You expect me to just accept that?" she questioned.
"Not really."
"Then why say it?"
"Because," Adrian replied, glancing toward Dominic, "your husband seems to have everything under control."
Clara followed his gaze again.
Dominic was still talking to Grace and Jonathan, completely composed.
Her suspicion only grew. Something was definitely going on. And judging by Adrian’s expression, Dominic wasn’t just a bystander in whatever had happened tonight.
Clara folded her arms. "Fine. I’ll ask him myself."
Adrian smiled. "Good luck."
Clara frowned. "Why did you say that like I’m going into battle?"
Adrian’s smile widened. "Because you might be."
"..."
