Shadows of a second life

Chapter 23: The Thirteenth Bloom

Three years had passed since the winter festival that marked the turning of another 495-day cycle. Elias Voss was now thirteen years old.

He had known for weeks that something was being planned. The secretive whispers between Lira and Maria, Elaric’s unusually cheerful grin whenever Elias entered a room, and Elara’s poorly hidden excitement all pointed to one thing: his coming-of-age celebration. In this world, thirteen marked the true transition into adulthood — the age when one could formally register as an adventurer, enter contracts, and be recognized as a full member of society.

Elias pretended he didn’t know.

He went about his days with feigned innocence, training with Elyra in the mornings, sparring lightly with Elara in the afternoons, and helping Maria with chores. Inside, a quiet warmth built in his chest. They’re really going all out for me…

Elias stepped outside one day heading out to practice magic.

Elyra, ever the clingy one followed him.

As they walked towards the clearing where they practiced a couple of guys who despised Elyra for her silver hair immediately blocked their path.

One of the guys spoke up telling Elias: what are you doing with an elf bro didn't you know what you are doing.

Elias responded back instantly:of course I do, and please I'm not your bro.

The boy got angry and decided to teach Elias some manners.

He immediately rushed forward fist raised to punch Elias face in.

Elias immediately sidestepped before delivering a powerful punch to the little kid.

He then spined around instantly delivering a powerful kick to the boy's stomach before pushing him to the ground.

As soon as the boy hit the ground, Elias starts stepping on his face causing the boy to immediately bleed and reel back in pain.

Elias then looked at Elyra telling her that she has nothing to be afraid of.

He was going to always protect her no matter what because as he told her she was his only true friend who wasn't immediate family

The day of his birthday arrived under a clear blue sky.

The house had been transformed while he was out on a supposed “errand” earlier that morning. Colorful banners hung from the rafters, fresh flowers adorned every table, and the scent of roasted meats, honey cakes, and spiced wine filled the air. The entire family had gathered, along with a few close village friends and Elyra, who stood shyly near the corner with a small wrapped gift in her hands.

“Surprise!” they all shouted as he stepped through the door.

Elias widened his eyes in perfectly acted shock. “Whoa… what’s all this?”

Elara laughed and punched his shoulder lightly. “Don’t even try it. We know you knew.”

The celebration was beautiful in its warmth and simplicity. No grand mansion this time — just their home, filled with love and effort. They ate, laughed, and shared stories late into the afternoon. Elaric told exaggerated tales of his adventurer days. Maria demonstrated a new Sharp Edge technique on a practice log outside. Elyra stayed close to Elias, occasionally brushing her hand against his while passing plates.

Then came the gifts.

Elara gave him a finely crafted wooden practice sword with reinforced edges. “So you can finally stop embarrassing yourself when we spar,” she teased.

Maria presented him with a set of high-quality leather armor pieces, lightweight but durable. “For when you start taking real requests.”

Elaric handed over a sturdy short spear. “Just in case magic isn’t enough. A good tank always has options.”

Elyra’s gift was a small, beautifully bound notebook filled with detailed herb illustrations and simple potion recipes she had copied from her grandfather. “So you can combine magic with healing better,” she said softly, cheeks faintly pink.

But the gift Elias cherished most came from Lira.

She approached him last, holding a long, elegant staff wrapped in fine blue cloth. When she unveiled it, Elias’s breath caught.

The staff was made of rare silverwood, polished to a mirror shine. At its top sat a large, flawless blue mana crystal — the highest quality the family could afford. It pulsed gently with inner light, a clear sign of its Rare-grade status. The crystal alone must have cost a small fortune.

Lira placed it in his hands, her eyes soft with love. “This is for you, my son. A tool worthy of the mage you’ve become. We wanted you to have something that represents how much we believe in you.”

Elias held the staff reverently, feeling the smooth wood and the steady thrum of power within the crystal. His throat tightened. For a long moment, he couldn’t speak.

Lira pulled him into a gentle hug. “No matter what happens, Elias, you are loved. Deeply. We will always be here for you.”

He hugged her back fiercely, eyes stinging. I’ve found it, he thought. Real happiness. A family that loves me. Friends who care. A life worth protecting.

He never wanted days like this to end.

The celebration continued long into the evening — laughter, music, and the warmth of the hearth chasing away the winter chill outside. For Elias Voss, the boy who had died broken and alone in another world, this thirteenth birthday felt like the true beginning of everything he had ever wanted.

And for the first time in two lifetimes, he allowed himself to believe it could last.

But the bitterness of reality was also the truth of it.

Happiness never lasts forever.

And Elias knew that more than anyone else
