Chapter 34 – Dry Wood and Open Flame
Evan checked his phone.
Only one-thirty in the morning.
It was still early, and after that whole mess, his stomach had been dragged awake.
He took Wayne to a lively late-night food stall nearby, ordered barbecue, and had the owner bring over a case of iced beer.
The grilled skewers arrived sizzling with oil.
Wayne grabbed one immediately, chewing until his mouth shone, then leaned close with worship in his eyes.
"Brother Evan, tonight you were so damn awesome. Holy shit."
He lowered his voice and asked sneakily, "Tell me the truth. Which master taught you that hand?"
Evan lifted a plastic cup and swallowed a mouthful of cold beer. He glanced at Wayne.
"Don't ask what you shouldn't ask."
"Just engrave my words into your brain. Gambling water is deep. Ten bets, nine cheats."
"As long as you dare sit at the table, you're the one losing."
Wayne immediately raised a hand.
"Brother Evan, don't worry. I swear I'll never gamble again. Even if I do, it has to be with you, my true god, sitting there."
Evan almost kicked him.
Then Wayne remembered something and looked miserable again.
"Right, Brother Evan. That red-dress woman just offered you a room-watching job. Why did you refuse? Ten thousand a month!"
"Why are we even attending this crap technical college? Isn't it just to get a diploma and find a decent job? Now a ten-thousand-dollar bowl of rice was placed right at your mouth, and you didn't eat?"
Evan bit into a lamb skewer and sighed helplessly.
"Fatty, have you heard the saying, if you want to wear the crown, you bear the weight?"
"Besides, do you know that woman? Do you know what force stands behind her gambling room?"
"What if she was digging a pit on purpose and wanted to use me as cannon fodder?"
Evan patiently lectured him.
"If you want to earn ten thousand fast dollars, you need the ability to earn it, and you need the ability to survive the risk."
"There is always money in this world. Don't end up with money to earn and no life to spend it. That would be truly stupid."
Wayne listened until he was stunned, then lifted his thumb.
"Brother Evan, you really understand big principles. Following you, I feel like I can not only win money, I can learn how to be human."
"From now on, you're my only true god."
Seeing Wayne's bootlicking expression, Evan's stomach churned. He nearly spat out the beer he had just swallowed.
After eating and drinking his fill, Evan deliberately asked the owner to pack two late-night meals.
One he handed to Wayne and told him to pass it to the girls' dorm for Wendy.
The other, Evan carried himself.
If Hannah was not asleep when he got back, it would be a decent midnight snack for her.
They parted at the intersection and took separate taxis.
When Evan returned to Southgate Heights, he unlocked the door.
The moment he pushed it open, he found the living room lights still on.
Following the light, he saw the sliding balcony door open.
Hannah stood barefoot on the balcony wearing only an extremely thin silk nightgown, so sheer that under the warm light it seemed almost unwilling to hide her body. The fabric skimmed her waist, clung softly to her chest, and fell over her hips in a way that made Evan's throat tighten before he could stop himself.
On the small round table beside her sat a bottle of red wine that was more than half empty and a tall glass.
Hannah leaned slightly over the balcony rail. Between two fingers, she actually held a slim women's cigarette, taking one drag, then one sip of wine.
Her back looked decadent and lonely.
Evan set the takeout boxes on the dining table and walked over quietly.
"Hannah."
Hannah acted as if she had not heard him.
Only when Evan came closer did he see that her eyes were red.
She had been crying.
"Hannah, what happened?"
Hannah took a hard drag from the cigarette, shook her head, and said hoarsely, "Nothing."
Before Evan came back, Hannah had finally been unable to hold back and called Rowan.
They had barely spoken two sentences before the fight started.
Rowan sounded extremely impatient on the phone. He kept saying he was running business out of town and was busy to death. Once he finished, he would naturally come back.
In the end, he even ordered Hannah to take good care of Evan at home and not neglect him.
Hannah had already been wronged and lonely from sleeping alone night after night. She exploded and argued with Rowan directly on the phone.
Rowan clearly did not want to fight with her. He hung up coldly.
In truth, why did Rowan not simply abandon Hannah, find some easy-to-control woman outside, do IVF, and inherit the Hale family's enormous fortune smoothly?
The reason was simple.
Old Mr. Hale's eye for people was viciously sharp. His inspection of a future granddaughter-in-law was so strict it bordered on abnormal.
Among all the candidates, only Hannah, with her clean background, outstanding beauty and temperament, and respected teacher status, had fully entered the old man's eyes.
Replace her with any other woman, and the old man would never hand over the inheritance.
That was why Rowan, even as a useless man, insisted on binding Hannah to him, even to the point of bringing Evan in as seed.
"Hannah."
Looking at her drinking away sorrow alone, Evan felt a little ache in his chest.
"If you've got a grievance, tell your little brother. Standing here in the cold wind by yourself makes me feel bad."
Without giving her time to refuse, Evan wrapped an arm around her soft shoulder and half-supported, half-held her back to the dining table.
He opened the barbecue and seafood porridge he had brought back.
Then he went to the kitchen, took two clean glasses, poured himself half a glass of red wine, and filled Hannah's.
"Come on. I'll drink first. Count it as an apology on behalf of whoever pissed you off."
After saying that, Evan tipped his head back and swallowed most of the glass in one breath.
"Hannah, what happened? Did you fight with Rowan again?"
Hannah bit her lip and nodded, wronged.
"Mm... he thinks I'm annoying."
"Come on." Evan slapped his thigh. "Couples fight. That's normal. My dad used to say you fight at the head of the bed and make up at the foot of the bed."
"Isn't that how it works?"
Hannah lowered her head and did not speak.
She was an extremely smart woman, and her sixth sense was frighteningly accurate.
During this period, she had clearly felt that Rowan no longer cared for her the way he had when they were in love. He was no longer patient, no longer attentive, sometimes not even willing to pretend. Occasionally, his eyes showed naked impatience.
"All right, don't think about those annoying things. Eat something first."
Evan placed chopsticks in her hand.
Hannah absentmindedly put a small piece of grilled meat into her mouth. It tasted like dust.
Then, suddenly, she seemed to understand something.
Or perhaps she simply gave up trying to behave.
She lifted the glass of red wine and stared at Evan through hazy eyes.
"Evan, drink with me."
"Tonight, we get drunk."
"I don't have class in the morning anyway. We can report to school tomorrow afternoon. It doesn't matter."
"Fine." Evan raised his glass. "Since Hannah has spoken, I'll risk my life to accompany a beauty."
The glasses touched.
He drank.
After several rounds, Hannah's fair cheeks flushed with an intoxicating red, and her eyes grew wet and drawn-out. She propped her chin on one hand and looked straight at Evan.
"Evan."
She sighed.
"If Rowan were like you... young, funny, and knew how to care about people, how good would that be?"
Back then, she had agreed to marry Rowan largely because he had moved her with meticulous care and almost excessive tolerance.
But after marriage, everything changed.
Rowan was not only useless physically. Now he could not even provide the most basic emotional warmth.
Instead, Evan, this young man she had once thought would be a troublesome temporary boarder, occasionally showed a tenderness that happened to fill the huge emptiness in her heart.
He made her remember what it felt like to want to lean on a man.
Evan scratched his head, a little embarrassed.
"As long as Hannah thinks I'm interesting. I was always worried that living here would inconvenience you."
"Hmph."
Hannah gave him a delicate sideways glance.
"If I really thought you were inconvenient, I would've thrown you out long ago."
"Come on. Stop talking. Drink."
Glass after glass.
The bottle of red wine emptied completely, and Evan ran to the cabinet to open another.
They drank two bottles of expensive red wine between them.
Red wine was deceptive. It felt gentle at first, then rose harder and harder.
Hannah's alcohol tolerance was not good to begin with. Now her eyes were unfocused, her body soft as melted silk, and she lay on the table making little drunken sounds.
Evan could drink fairly well, but he had already poured several bottles of iced beer into his stomach with Wayne earlier.
Beer and red wine mixed. The alcohol rushed upward. His head grew dizzy, and the room began to double.
"No more, Hannah. I'll help you back to your room."
Evan swayed to his feet, walked to Hannah's side, wrapped an arm around her narrow waist, and helped her up from the chair.
Her waist felt so soft under his palm that his fingers almost did not dare move.
They stumbled into the master bedroom together.
Evan lowered Hannah onto the wide bed and was just about to turn around and leave.
Suddenly, Hannah reached out and grabbed his collar.
With the courage of wine, she pulled hard, dragging Evan down to the edge of the bed.
"Evan... don't go."
Her breath carried red wine and the faint fragrance of her body, rushing straight into his face.
"Tell me the truth. Touch your conscience and answer."
"Am I beautiful?"
Evan's head was spinning. He nodded again and again.
"Beautiful. You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."
"Then..." Hannah's eyes were misty, her red lips slightly parted. "Am I sexy?"
"Sexy. Too sexy."
"What about my body?"
Hannah refused to let him dodge. Her voice had a drunken sharpness, half pain and half challenge.
"Are my hips good? Is my chest..."
She stopped for half a breath, then forced the words out.
"Big enough?"
Evan's mouth went dry. His gaze instinctively dropped, and he swallowed hard.
"Yes."
His voice was rougher than before.
"Hannah, you're... the best I've ever seen. Perfect."
Hannah heard the naked praise, but she did not look happy.
Her eyes reddened instead, and she laughed bitterly.
"Then tell me."
"If I'm so beautiful, so sexy, with such a good body..."
"Why do I have to sleep alone every night?"
"Why?"
Evan was stumped. He did not know how to comfort her.
Before he could find words, Hannah suddenly wrapped both arms around his neck and pressed him down.
Their faces were close enough that their noses almost touched.
She stared directly into his eyes and asked the deadliest question of all.
"Evan, tell me the truth."
"Do you want to sleep with me?"
The question struck like lightning, frying Evan's already half-crashed brain completely.
This was a death question.
He stared at the stunning face right before him. His breathing grew heavy.
Alcohol, long-suppressed desire, and Hannah's broken loneliness rushed together, battering the cage of reason.
To hell with morality.
To hell with Rowan.
Evan decided to obey the most honest answer inside his body.
He gritted his teeth and squeezed out one word.
"Yes."
"Not only do I want to sleep with you..."
His voice turned hoarse.
"I want to press you down on this bed and make you forget every night you ever spent alone."
Hannah did not get angry.
On the contrary, she looked like a pile of dry wood that had finally caught flame.
"Fine."
Her fingers tightened around his collar.
"Then come here."
