My Married Roommate Asked Me to Give Her a Baby

Chapter 24 – Trouble at the Gate

The next day, Evan and Hannah drove to school as usual.

Only today, Hannah looked extremely low.

All the way there, she held the steering wheel with a cold face and said nothing. She did not pay attention to Evan in the passenger seat at all.

Evan knew why.

It was probably because Rowan was leaving for another week-long business trip.

Thinking about it, that made sense. A newly married husband spending most of the year running around outside would leave any woman feeling uncomfortable.

When Evan entered the classroom, the boys he had recently collected immediately surrounded him.

One called him Brother Evan, another brought hot soy milk, and another insisted on buying him breakfast.

Wayne was the most shameless. The moment he entered, he squeezed next to Evan and sat down.

Only today, the fat man's face looked worse than if he had eaten dirt. His eyes were empty, and two huge dark circles hung beneath them.

Evan glanced at him.

"What's wrong with you?"

"Got your soul drained last night? Why do you look like your father died?"

Wayne slapped his textbook over his face and buried his head in his arms.

"Don't mention it. I fell hard this time."

"Last night I wanted you to go play pool with me, but you didn't come."

"Then my hands got itchy, and I went back to the tables."

"Lost everything. Principal and profit. Not even my underwear survived."

Evan slapped him on the back of the head without mercy.

"Serves you right."

"Losing it back is a good thing."

"At least now you understand there's no gambling table that lets you win forever."

"If you kept winning, you'd sink deeper and deeper. Then one day somebody cuts your hand off, and you can cry properly."

Wayne wailed.

"I understand the logic, but my pockets are cleaner than my face now."

"No money for massage places. My heart hurts, Brother Evan."

Evan rolled his eyes.

"Can't you find a proper girlfriend?"

"Why do you have to pay money in places like that and buy trouble?"

As soon as Evan finished speaking, Wendy came over with a red face and naturally sat in the empty seat on his other side.

Now Wayne and Wendy sat left and right, sandwiching Evan in the middle.

"Here. For you."

Wendy took a red apple from her bag and placed it in front of Evan.

That one movement ignited the gossip soul of every boy nearby.

They immediately began howling.

"Ooooh!"

"Future lady boss is so caring."

"Hello, future lady boss!"

The unified teasing made Wendy's face turn bright red. She looked as if she wanted to crawl into a crack in the floor.

The morning class was boring as usual.

College classrooms were like that. The teacher did what the teacher did, the students did what the students did, and both sides respected each other's freedom by ignoring each other.

At last, noon dismissal arrived.

Wayne wanted to flatter his big brother and said he would borrow money to treat Evan to noodles outside school.

But the three had just left the teaching building when Mason and Fiona blocked their path with seven or eight people.

Evan's eyes cooled.

He stared at Mason.

"What?"

"That beating wasn't enough? You still want practice?"

Mason crossed his arms and snorted arrogantly.

"Kid, aren't you good at fighting?"

"Bullying us students means nothing."

"If you've got guts, fight someone harder from the streets."

"My cousin is waiting at the school gate right now. Do you dare go out?"

"If you don't dare, then from now on, every time you see me in school, you call me grandpa."

Evan laughed and shoved Mason aside.

"Let's go, then. I'll see what kind of god your cousin is."

He had taken only one step when Wendy grabbed his wrist tightly.

"Don't go."

She stood on tiptoe and whispered anxiously in his ear.

"Listen to me."

"Last night in the dorm, I heard Fiona bragging."

"Mason's cousin really runs with street people."

"They hit hard. Don't provoke them. We can't afford it."

"As long as you stay inside school, they can't do anything."

"If it really doesn't work... we can call the police."

Call the police?

That was not Evan's style.

If he only knew how to call the police when trouble came, Mason's group would think he was a coward. After that, they would only cause more trouble in school. Even Fiona's girls would bully Wendy without fear.

It was the same logic as fighting back home when he was a kid.

Why did beaten children refuse to tell parents or teachers?

Because once you told, everyone your age looked down on you. You became a weakling. You could not raise your head in class again.

The bullies, meanwhile, only became more arrogant.

Evan did not care whether the other side was black society or white society.

Everyone carried one head on two shoulders.

Could the other side take an atomic bomb with their body?

Even Wayne was scared this time.

He tugged Evan's clothes and advised wildly, "Brother Evan, Wendy's right. Forget it."

"Street people aren't something we can provoke. If needed, call the police or report it to school security."

Evan shook them both off without hesitation.

"Bullshit."

"Mainly, I already talked big just now."

"You want me to turtle up now and admit defeat?"

"Isn't that slapping my own face?"

"Go. Let's see what's happening at the school gate."

On the way there, Wayne's legs were weak from fear, but he still gritted his teeth, dug the telescopic baton from his bag, and stuffed it into Evan's hand for protection.

Sure enough, when they reached the gate, a beat-up silver van was parked across the road.

The moment Mason saw his backer, his confidence returned.

He ran toward the van and pointed at Evan.

"Cousin! That's him!"

"That's the bastard who hit me."

With a rough sliding sound, the side door of the van was yanked open.

Five or six street-looking men jumped down, cursing as they came.

The leader was Mason's cousin, Rex Wong.

He had a scar across his face that looked intimidating. In reality, the scar had not come from a knife fight. He had cut himself on a metal sheet years ago while apprenticing at an auto repair shop.

But to act tough outside, he told everyone it came from a gang fight over territory.

Because of that scar, many inexperienced students and small-time punks truly feared him.

Rex walked with a swagger that denied all relatives.

He came to Evan and reached out arrogantly, pressing hard on Evan's shoulder to give him a warning.

But when his hand landed, he found Evan's body stood like a stone statue.

Feet rooted. Shoulder unmoving.

Rex's face changed slightly. He pulled his hand back awkwardly.

"Kid, you're the one acting crazy and hitting my cousin?"

Evan gave a flat hum.

"Since you dared hit him, do you know what road I run on outside?"

Evan picked his ear impatiently.

"I don't care what gutter you crawl through."

"If you've got something to say, say it. I'm trying to eat lunch."

Evan's ignorant, fearless arrogance made Wayne laugh beside him. Some of the fear actually left him.

Rex had lost face in public and laughed from anger.

"Good. Crazy enough."

"My name doesn't change when I walk or sit."

"Local Southgate Crew."

"People call me one of the Five Tigers of Tangle Lane, the Downhill Tiger, Rex Wong."

Hearing such a middle-school name, Evan pulled a cigarette from his pocket, put it in his mouth, and calmly lit it.

Generally speaking, people in the streets who gave themselves louder and fancier names were eighty percent idiots.

Why spend so much effort naming yourself?

To scare people.

The barking dog did not bite. The biting dog did not bark.

Someone who came up announcing his title and shouting like this was usually bottom-level trash.

Besides, for some student conflict, this man had personally brought people to trouble Evan. A real heavyweight could solve it by sending two boys over. Why appear personally and lower himself?

Evan saw through him at one glance.

This scar-faced man looked tough but was hollow inside.

Garbage.

Evan exhaled smoke, his eyes cold.

"Stop talking nonsense."

"If we're fighting, hurry up."

"Single combat or group fight?"

"Single combat means I fight all five or six of you alone."

"Group fight means all five or six of you fight me alone."

Evan's arrogance stunned Rex.

He paused and asked instinctively, "Is there a difference?"

Evan sneered and flicked ash near Rex's feet.

"Of course."

"If I single-handedly challenge you five or six, the result is all of you lying down."

"If you five or six surround me, the result is still me putting all of you down."

"So today, either you kill me here."

"Or I beat everyone here into the dirt."

Facing Evan's nearly insane declaration, Rex and the men behind him froze for a second, then burst into laughter.

"Damn. Did this kid watch too many gangster movies?"

"Fine, fine. You're so tough, right?"

Rex pointed toward an open patch ahead.

"Walk over there."

"I want to see whether your fists are as hard as your mouth."

Evan walked in front with a cigarette between his lips. Wayne and Wendy followed behind.

Wendy was nearly in tears, gripping Evan's clothes and begging quietly.

"Evan, forget it."

"They really are street people. They're hard to mess with."

"I've heard of that Southgate Crew. They don't know when to stop. People can die."

"Stop showing off. Let's run back to school and call the police, okay?"

Wayne was also sweating.

"Brother Evan, she's right."

"There's no need to fight these desperate guys head-on."

"A good man doesn't eat the loss in front of him."

Wayne and Wendy had clearly been frightened by the other side's formation. They still had not seen the truth.

Evan waved irritably.

"Both of you shut up and watch."

"If I don't beat the shit out of them today, it only means they emptied themselves this morning."
