Chapter 20 – Psychological Suggestion
"Oh, my Hannah."
"For one broken lightbulb, couldn't you call me?"
"Why climb so high?"
"If you seriously hurt yourself, Rowan will come back and blame me."
Evan complained while bending down quickly. He helped Hannah up from the floor, half supporting and half holding her as he brought her into the master bedroom.
He let her lean carefully against the headboard.
Then he crouched and touched her ankle.
The pale ankle had already swollen visibly.
"Where's the medicine kit?"
"Do you have any liniment? Let me check the bone first."
"You know how to do that?" Hannah looked shocked.
"Of course."
"That old rascal who raised me may not have been able to find a wife, but he knew every crooked skill under the sun."
"I even know a little face reading."
Hannah sucked in a breath from the pain and pointed to the bedside table.
"Medicine is inside."
Evan opened the drawer and found a medical box. After searching for a while, he pulled out a small bottle of medicated oil.
He checked the date.
Almost expired.
He tossed it back in disgust.
"Sit still. Wait for me."
Evan turned and ran to the kitchen.
On the counter sat half a bottle of strong cooking liquor. He poured some into a porcelain bowl, grabbed a small stool, and returned to the bedroom.
He placed the stool beside the bed and sat down.
Then he reached out and firmly held Hannah's injured ankle.
The moment her bare foot was caught by a man's warm hand, Hannah trembled.
It felt like a small electric current. Instinctively, she tried to pull her leg back.
But Evan's grip was strong, like iron tongs.
She could not pull free.
"Hannah, don't move."
"I'll use an old method to rub it open and move the bruised blood. Tomorrow it won't hurt as much."
"If this swells like a pig's foot, how are you going to wear heels to school?"
Hannah was sweating from the pain. She bit her red lip and nodded.
"Mm... then be gentle. I'm afraid of pain."
Evan held her foot, dipped his fingers in the strong liquor, pressed against the swollen area, and slowly increased force.
At first, all his attention stayed on the ankle.
But as he rubbed, his gaze began to travel upward along her calf against his own will.
Hannah noticed that direct stare, and her cheeks flushed instantly.
Her desperate effort to pull her foot back had not really been because of pain.
It was because she suddenly remembered what she was wearing under the short silk nightdress: a thin, almost sheer pair of sleep shorts. The kind that technically existed, but did not provide much comfort if the angle was wrong.
Now Evan sat low on a small stool, while she sat high on the edge of the bed.
If Evan raised his head even slightly, the situation would become extremely dangerous.
Hannah panicked and pulled at the hem of her nightdress with both hands.
Unfortunately, the silk dress was too short to solve any real problem.
Evan saw her embarrassment and quickly tried to shift attention.
"Relax."
"Back home, a girl in my class once twisted her ankle. I massaged it once, and by dismissal she could hop home herself."
"You have to trust my unique skill."
Hannah pressed her legs together and gave an absent-minded hum.
Evan truly did not want to keep looking upward.
But his eyes seemed to have installed their own radar.
They did not fully obey his brain.
After a few accidental glances, Evan discovered something explosive.
How to describe it?
Best possible architecture.
Of course, through that thin fabric, he could not be one hundred percent certain. He did not dare lean in and confirm anything. He could only secretly sigh that Hannah was surprisingly fashionable in private.
After a while, Hannah felt the atmosphere had become unbearable and hurried to find a topic.
"Didn't you just brag that you could read faces?"
"Then tell me. How will my luck be in the next few years?"
Evan stopped and raised his head, studying that beautiful face seriously.
"Then I'll speak honestly."
"If I say something unpleasant, don't blame me for being a crow's mouth."
Hannah bit her lip and nodded.
"Say it. I'm not that fragile."
"From your face, you're definitely born for wealth and comfort."
"There will be difficulties in the middle, but in the second half of your life, you won't lack food, clothing, or ease."
Hannah did not care about wealth.
She asked anxiously, "What about love?"
Evan's heart thudded.
That was exactly what he did not want to mention.
The first time he looked at Hannah's face carefully, he had noticed a shadow line in her marriage palace. It meant her marriage would not go smoothly.
Evan coughed twice and tried to dodge.
"That part is hard to say."
"If I talk nonsense, I may mislead you. If I tell the truth, I'm afraid I'll create psychological suggestion."
"There's a saying."
"Things you can change don't need to be known early. Things you can't change are useless to know."
"So for love, it's better to let nature flow."
The more Evan hid it, the more Hannah wanted to know.
The matter of having a child was already the biggest knot in her heart.
"It's fine. Say it boldly."
"I'm a teacher, a firm believer in materialism. You can't scare me."
Seeing that he could not avoid it, Evan put on a serious face.
"From what I can see, you're not destined to have only one man in this life."
"There will be two relationships that cut deeply."
"And the second one has not truly begun yet."
"Also, Hannah, your fate carries twin stars."
"In the future, you should have both a son and a daughter."
Hearing this, Hannah's brows tightened.
Her expression became complicated.
She and Rowan had been university sweethearts who went straight into marriage.
But Evan said she would have another relationship.
Even more absurd, he said she would have a son and a daughter.
Rowan clearly could not have children.
Did that mean heaven had already decided her marriage with Rowan would not last?
Seeing Hannah fall into worried thought, Evan quickly tried to pull the words back.
"Hey, don't take it seriously."
"I'm half-trained at best. Just talking nonsense."
"It's like little girls reading horoscopes. Listen for fun and forget it."
"Don't give yourself psychological suggestion."
"People are like that. The more they hint something to themselves, the easier life bends that way."
Hannah gave a thoughtful hum.
Evan then picked up the porcelain bowl, took a large mouthful of strong liquor, and held it in his mouth.
Pff.
He sprayed it in a fine mist over Hannah's swollen ankle.
Then he pulled out a lighter and flicked it.
With a low whoosh, blue flame rose across her ankle.
Hannah nearly screamed.
Then she realized the flame floated only on the surface. It did not burn her skin. Instead, it brought a strangely comfortable warmth.
After a few seconds, Evan moved fast, grabbed the damp towel beside him, and pressed it down to extinguish the fire.
"Done. Try walking."
Hannah placed her foot on the floor doubtfully.
When she put weight on it, her eyes brightened.
The joint was still sore, but the sharp swollen pain had disappeared by more than half.
Evan searched the pile of almost-expired medicine and found a joint patch. He opened it and carefully applied it to her ankle.
"Sleep well tonight. Tomorrow morning you'll be walking normally."
"Mm. Evan, thank you."
After cleaning up, Evan lay back in his own bed and let out a long sigh.
He had told Hannah not to give herself psychological suggestions.
But damn it.
Now he was the one doing exactly that.
Two relationships?
Could Hannah's destined second relationship...
Have something to do with him?
