Chapter – 32 – The Warden’s Revival
Lucien emerged from the shadows like a wraith given form, his dark cloak billowing behind him as he descended upon the clearing where Katelle and Kelie stood bound by Morbert's sinister will. Behind him came Quindic, Rosra, and Ashdan—the latter having insisted on joining despite the obvious tension that crackled between him and Rosra. Perhaps Ashdan was simply too eager to prove his worth, or perhaps he sought to win Rosra's heart once more. Whatever his reasons, the fact remained: he was here, his halberd gleaming with barely contained violence.
The moment Quindic's gaze fell upon Alton, something inside him snapped. His rage became an uncontrollable inferno, his muscles coiling like serpents as he launched himself forward. His fists became blurs of deadly precision, each strike aimed at Alton's vital points with murderous intent. The mind control Morbert had woven around them was absolute—they were nothing more than puppets dancing on invisible strings, commanded to kill anyone who dared interfere.
Alton responded instantly, his body moving with the practiced ease of a seasoned warrior. "Storm Fang Strike!" he roared, his blade crackling with electrical energy as he swept it toward Quindic's neck. But Quindic was faster, his body flowing like water around the attack. He ducked beneath the glowing blade and drove his fist upward in a devastating uppercut. "Dragon Suppression Fist!"
The impact was catastrophic. Alton's head snapped backward, blood spraying from his mouth as his teeth shattered against each other. He stumbled, his vision swimming with stars, but the mind control wouldn't allow him to retreat. If Alton had been in his right mind, he would have strategized, would have calculated his opponent's weaknesses and exploited them. But Morbert's influence had stripped away all reason, leaving behind only a hollow vessel driven by primal instinct.
Alton rose again, his body screaming in protest, his legs threatening to buckle beneath him. He charged mindlessly forward, his blade raised high, without any thought of defense or evasion. Quindic watched him come with cold eyes, and when Alton was within range, he pivoted on his heel and unleashed his most devastating technique. "Earth Shattering Kick!"
The blow connected with Alton's face with the force of a collapsing mountain. Bone crunched. Flesh tore. Alton's head twisted at an unnatural angle before his body crumpled to the ground like a discarded puppet. He was dead before he hit the earth, his life extinguished in an instant.
But death was not the end.
Alton's body began to dissolve, his form breaking apart into motes of golden light that swirled upward like fireflies caught in a tempest. The light was drawn inexorably toward the crimson gate that pulsed ominously at the heart of the death pit, its surface rippling like blood-stained water. The gate consumed Alton's essence without hesitation, and then it was over—nothing remained but the lingering echo of his final scream.
Meanwhile, Osric had set his sights on Rosra, his blade gleaming with malicious intent as he closed the distance between them. But Rosra was no longer the woman she had been. Her eyes blazed with newfound power, her red hair whipping around her face like flames given form.
She didn't wait for him to attack. "Phoenix Flame Slash!" Her sword erupted with searing heat, a giant phoenix of pure flame surging forth from the blade's edge. The celestial bird screeched as it hurtled toward Osric, its wings leaving trails of fire that scorched the very air.
Osric's eyes widened, but his training took over. "Heaven Shield!" he cried, his astral energy coalescing into a barrier of shimmering light. The phoenix crashed against the shield with explosive force, sending shockwaves rippling across the battlefield. Osric was thrown backward, his shield cracking under the assault, but he managed to absorb most of the damage. Blood trickled from his nose, and his armor was scorched black, but he was still standing.
Rosra didn't give him time to recover. She moved like a dancer across the battlefield, her blade weaving patterns of death. "Hundred Leaf Sword Dance!" Hundreds of spectral leaves materialized around her, each one gleaming with razor-sharp edges and enchanted light. They swirled around her in a breathtaking display, the illumination so bright that Osric was nearly blinded.
Ashdan watched from the periphery, his breath caught in his throat. He had known Rosra was strong—he had always known—but this was something else entirely. Her red hair flowed like liquid fire as she moved, her attacks following the rhythm of an invisible melody. Each strike flowed into the next with effortless grace, her body a weapon of devastating beauty.
Is that really Rosra? Ashdan wondered, his heart pounding against his ribs. She's... she's magnificent. Like a goddess descended from the heavens. And her attacks... she's using her most powerful techniques without pause. She's become so bold, so fearless.
A smile tugged at Ashdan's lips despite the chaos surrounding him. He was proud of her, genuinely proud. But beneath that pride lurked a shadow of suspicion and jealousy. How had she grown so powerful so quickly? What had happened during her time away? Was it Lucien?
Osric was struggling against Rosra's onslaught, his movements becoming frantic as he tried to evade the endless barrage of spectral leaves. Some found their mark, slicing through his armor and drawing blood. He was being driven back, step by step, his confidence crumbling with every wound.
Rosra saw her opportunity and seized it. "Starfall Sword Technique!" she shouted, her voice ringing with command. Above Osric, the sky seemed to fracture as hundreds of ethereal swords materialized, each one blazing with astral energy. They descended like a meteor shower, their speed so great that they left trails of light in their wake.
Osric tried to raise his Heaven Shield again, but it was too late. The swords rained down upon him, each one finding its mark. He screamed as the blades pierced his body, his blood painting the ground beneath him. When the assault finally ceased, he was on his knees, his body riddled with wounds, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
Rosra walked toward him, her footsteps steady and sure. She raised her sword high, and Osric's eyes met hers with a mixture of hatred and fear.
Her blade descended, and Osric's head rolled from his shoulders.
But the danger was far from over. Behind Rosra, Lorey materialized from the shadows, his assassin's blade aimed at her unprotected back. He moved with supernatural speed, his weapon gleaming with dark intent.
Ashdan's instincts screamed a warning, and he moved before conscious thought could catch up. His halberd swept through the air, intercepting Lorey's strike with inches to spare. The clash of metal against metal echoed across the battlefield, sparks flying as Ashdan threw his body between the assassin and Rosra.
Lorey snarled in frustration, his form wavering as he prepared to vanish once more, a hand grabbed Rosra's arm, pulling her close.
"Are you okay?" Lucien's voice was filled with genuine concern, his dark eyes searching her face for any sign of injury.
Rosra's heart swelled at the sight of him. "Yeah, I'm good," she said, and before she knew what she was doing, she threw her arms around him. She pressed herself against his chest, her ear against his heartbeat, feeling the steady rhythm of his life. She was so close she could smell the forest on his clothes, the faint hint of blood and earth.
Ashdan's blood ran cold. He turned to see Rosra wrapped in Lucien's embrace, her eyes closed in contentment. His heart burned with jealousy so intense it felt like fire in his veins. His grip on his halberd tightened until his knuckles turned white, and for a moment, he forgot about the assassin lurking in the shadows.
"Thank you, Ashdan," Lucien said, his voice smooth as silk. "For protecting her."
The words struck Ashdan like a physical blow. Protecting her? The implication was clear: Lucien was claiming ownership over Rosra, and Ashdan was nothing more than a hired sword. His jaw clenched, his teeth grinding together with barely suppressed fury.
But Lorey was still out there, and the danger was far from over. The assassin reappeared behind Katelle, his blade flashing—and then he was gone again, disappearing into the shadows like a ghost. He struck from all angles, appearing and disappearing with dizzying speed, his attacks coming from directions no one could predict.
Lucien's eyes narrowed as he tracked the assassin's movements. When Lorey materialized again, Lucien's arms shot forward, his astral energy erupting from the ground in a tangle of roots and vines. The wooden tendrils wrapped around Lorey's form and hurled him through the air like a ragdoll, sending him crashing into a tree fifty meters away.
"Come, Ashdan," Lucien commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "Katelle, you're with us. Rosra, take care of Kelie, and don't put yourself in danger. Quindic, protect them both."
Before anyone could respond, Lucien was already running toward Lorey's position, his form blurring with speed.
They were now in a completely different area, far from Rosra and the others. The forest was dense here, the canopy blocking out most of the light, leaving the battlefield shrouded in ominous twilight.
Lorey might not have been the strongest among Morbert's minions, but his stealth skills were legendary. He moved like a shadow, striking with surgical precision before vanishing into nothingness. Ashdan and Katelle attacked relentlessly, their weapons carving arcs of deadly energy through the air, but not a single blow connected.
"Golden Emperor Slash!" Katelle roared, his blade erupting with golden light. The attack swept through the area where Lorey had been standing, but the assassin had already vanished.
Lorey appeared behind Katelle, his blade aimed at his spine. "Azure Sky Severing Blade!" A crescent of blue energy shot forward, slicing through Katelle's defenses and piercing his side. Katelle screamed in agony as the energy blade impaled him, the wound weeping blood.
Lorey grabbed Katelle's body and ran, his form flickering as he retreated into the forest.
"Ashdan, give me your halberd!" Lucien shouted, his eyes blazing with urgency. "I'm going to use my technique, Shadow Predator, to reach them faster. You come as quickly as you can."
Ashdan hesitated for only a moment. He hated Lucien, hated everything about the man who had stolen Rosra's heart, but Katelle's life was on the line. The priority was saving their comrade. "Here!" he shouted, tossing his halberd to Lucien. "Take it!"
Lucien caught the weapon effortlessly, and his form began to dissolve into shadow. "Shadow Predator!" he cried, and then he was gone, traveling through the Shadows at impossible speed.
Ever since I met Gwenra and the others, Lucien thought as he raced through the shadows, I've never used my World Root Executioner Halberd. Nor am I Planning to.
He emerged from the darkness just as Lorey was about to behead Katelle. Lucien's stolen halberd swept toward Lorey's neck, and the assassin only barely managed to evade the attack. He stumbled backward, his eyes wide with shock.
Katelle was bleeding profusely, his lifeblood pooling beneath him. His face was pale, his breathing shallow. Lucien knelt beside him and pressed a pill to his lips. "Here, take this astral marrow pill," he said urgently. "We can't afford to lose any more allies."
Katelle swallowed the pill, and his wounds began to knit themselves together with miraculous speed. His color returned, his breathing steadying as the pill's effects took hold.
Lucien stood and faced Katelle, his expression serious. "Here's the plan," he said, his voice low. "But for it to work, you need to trust me. I'm going to hide in the shadows, and you'll attack Lorey with everything you have. He only attacks those who attack him, so when you strike, he'll come for you. When he does, I'll appear behind him and end this."
Katelle met Lucien's eyes without hesitation. "After everything you've done for me," he said, "I trust you with my life. I'll hit him with my most powerful technique to draw his attention."
Lucien nodded once, then melted into the shadows, disappearing behind a nearby tree. Katelle was left alone in the clearing, a lone figure in the darkened forest. He took a deep breath and summoned every ounce of astral energy within him.
"Myriad Sword Rain!" he cried, and above him, the sky erupted with a thousand glowing blades. They descended like a storm, each one seeking Lorey's hidden form. The assassin was caught off guard, his cloak torn to shreds as dozens of swords found their mark. He screamed in pain, his blood spraying across the forest floor.
But Morbert's orders were absolute, and Lorey rose again, his blade raised, determined to complete his mission. Katelle was drained, his astral energy completely depleted. He fell to his knees, helpless and exposed.
Lorey appeared before him, his blade descending toward Katelle's neck. Katelle looked up, and despite the terror of the moment, he smiled. "That's what we were waiting for," he said. "You're finally in our trap."
But nothing happened. Lorey's blade continued its descent, and Katelle's eyes widened in horror as he saw Lucien standing behind Lorey—but not attacking. His mind raced, trying to comprehend what was happening. Why isn't he striking?
The realization hit him like a thunderbolt. He betrayed me. I trusted him, and he betrayed me.
It was too late. Lorey's blade swept through Katelle's neck, severing his head from his body. The decapitated form crumpled to the ground, and Katelle's head rolled across the forest floor.
Lucien had already moved. "Soul Void!" he cried, his power reaching into Katelle's dying mind. The shock of the betrayal had left Katelle's mental defenses shattered, and Lucien's power easily absorbed his soul. The severed head rolled toward Lucien's feet, and he nudged it aside with his boot.
He picked up Ashdan's halberd and drove it through Lorey's chest. The assassin couldn't disappear while attacking, and now he was helpless. The weapon pierced his heart, and Lorey died with a gurgling gasp.
"Peak Spirit Forge Realm, my ass," Lucien muttered. He looked down at Katelle's corpse, his expression cold and calculating. "Now it's time to get rid of Ashdan."
He knelt beside Katelle's body, positioning the corpse to make it look as though Ashdan had been the killer. Then he waited.
Ashdan burst through the trees, his speed augmented by astral energy. He had pushed himself to his limits to catch up, and now he arrived to find Lucien crouched over Katelle's body, the halberd still embedded in the corpse. Lucien stood, pulled the weapon free, and tossed it to Ashdan.
"Wh-what are you doing, Lucien?" Ashdan's voice cracked with rage. He had seen Lucien stabbing his childhood friend's corpse, and his mind couldn't process what he had witnessed.
"Katelle! Wake up!" Ashdan fell to his knees beside his friend, tears streaming down his face. "Please, wake up! You can't be dead! You can't!"
His hands trembled as he reached for Katelle's body, but he knew it was futile. The head was separated from the body—there was nothing anyone could do. Ashdan's grief transformed into fury, his astral energy erupting around him in a violent maelstrom.
Lucien stood a few meters away, a smile playing at the corners of his lips. He had observed everything, understood everyone's relationships. He knew that Ashdan and Katelle had been childhood friends, their bond forged through years of shared struggle. He knew that Kelie loved Halfred, and that Halfred had been holding back his feelings until he could make a name for himself. He had seen the way they looked at each other, the unspoken longing in their eyes.
Now Ashdan was prepared to kill him, and Lucien seized his moment. "Ashdan, WHY?!" he screamed, his voice dripping with false emotion. A smile spread across his face even as the words left his lips.
The lie was monstrous, and Ashdan's rage blinded him to reason. He swung his halberd with savage fury, and Lucien was forced to defend himself with his sword. But the halberd had longer reach, and with each swing, Lucien took more damage. Cuts opened across his body, blood flowing freely, but nothing was fatal—Lucien was deflecting most of the attacks.
Ashdan cornered him, pressing the advantage. It was almost too easy, and in his rage, Ashdan didn't question why a warrior as skilled as Lucien was taking so many hits. His face twisted with hatred, his eyes burning with murderous intent. "Lucien Vale," he snarled, "today I'll drink your blood, you bastard! How dare you kill my friend!"
Quindic, Kelie, and Rosra heard Lucien's scream and began running toward the source without a moment's hesitation.
"What was that?" Rosra's voice was tight with concern. "Did something happen to them?"
"I don't know," Quindic replied, his pace quickening. "The only thing we can do is get there as quickly as possible."
Brother Lucien, he thought desperately, please be okay.
They reached the clearing to find a horror beyond comprehension. Katelle's severed head lay on the ground, his body impaled by a halberd. Kelie fell to her knees, her screams tearing through the forest as tears streamed down her face. Rosra stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock.
Then she saw them—Lucien and Ashdan standing apart, Ashdan's halberd driven through Lucien's stomach. Blood poured from Lucien's mouth, and he collapsed into Rosra's arms. Ashdan pulled the weapon free, and Lucien sagged against her.
"H-he killed everyone," Lucien gasped, his hand pointing weakly at Ashdan.
"Liar!" Ashdan roared, raising his halberd for another strike. "You killed Katelle, you bastard!"
Rosra's reaction was instantaneous. "Phoenix Flame Slash!" The phoenix of fire erupted from her blade, slamming into Ashdan and hurling him against a tree. He crashed into the trunk with bone-shattering force, gasping for breath.
Kelie rose from her brother's corpse, her eyes red with tears but blazing with fury. She pointed at Ashdan, her finger trembling with accusation. "You said Lucien killed my brother, but my brother's wounds are from your halberd!" Her voice broke. "Katelle was like an older brother to you, and you killed him! Why?! What did he ever do to you?!"
Ashdan struggled to his feet. "It was him!" he shouted, gesturing frantically at Lucien. "He stabbed Katelle with my halberd! I saw him!"
"So you're telling us," Rosra's voice was deadly calm, "that Lucien stabbed Katelle, somehow gave you back your halberd, and then let you stab him? Are you even listening to yourself?"
She pressed astral marrow pills to Lucien's lips, and his wounds began to heal. Rosra held him close, her eyes locked on Ashdan with murderous intent.
But before anyone could speak, the sky above them turned blood red.
A sound like the death rattle of the universe echoed across the battlefield. Every warrior looked up, their faces draining of color as they beheld the impossible.
Something was descending from the heavens—something ancient and terrible. The clouds twisted into a colossal vortex, the sky itself seeming to bleed. An oppressive silence swallowed the world, and the air grew heavy with dread.
At first, it was only a silhouette—an impossible shape blotting out the heavens. As it drew closer, countless crimson eyes opened across its grotesque body, each one filled with ancient hunger. Jagged limbs, too many to count, unfolded like the legs of a monstrous spider. Tattered wings stretched across the sky, leaving trails of black mist that poisoned the air beneath them.
Its flesh shifted endlessly, as though thousands of tormented souls were trapped beneath its skin. Their silent screams distorted its form, the faces of the damned pressing against the membrane of its body before being swallowed back into darkness.
Every heartbeat it released shook the earth, and every breath carried the stench of decay and extinction. Mountains trembled beneath its presence. Rivers ceased to flow. The bravest warriors found their knees weakening beneath a terror no training could overcome.
It was not merely a monster. It was a calamity given flesh, an existence so ancient and horrifying that the world itself seemed to reject its arrival.
