Reborn in hell with a skill creation system

Chapter 100: The Threads of the Ether-Web (2)

The cruncible

Section III: The Crucible of Pressure

At six miles below sea level, the air changed.

The temperature had risen to one hundred and ten degrees Fahrenheit, but it was not the oppressive, soot-laden heat of the Oakhaven blast furnaces. The air was dry, crisp, and charged with an intense electric potential that made the hair on Marcus’s arms stand straight up.

The inclined tunnel opened abruptly into a cavern so vast that the powerful searchlights of the steam crawler could not locate the ceiling or the far walls.

Occupying the center of this abyssal space was the Master Core Vault, a spherical structure half a mile in diameter, suspended in the center of the cavern without a single pillar, bridge, or cable holding it in place.

It floated in absolute mid-air, held suspended by six colossal, glowing streams of liquid gold-bronze plasma that erupted from the cavern floor and arched upward into the sphere’s lower poles like the fingers of a giant hand.

Around the floating sphere, an outer ring of twelve massive, horseshoe-shaped bronze magnets, each the size of an eight-story building, rotated in a slow, silent horizontal orbit. Every time a magnet passed one of the plasma streams, a deep, bone-rattling pulse of pure kinetic energy surged through the floor of the cavern, causing the steam crawler’s pressure gauges to jump in unison.

"God in Heaven..." Jacob breathed, pulling the steering levers back to bring the crawler to a dead stop at the edge of the stone landing precipice. "It’s... it’s floating. Five hundred thousand tons of solid metal, just sitting in the air!"

"It’s a magnetic levitation manifold operating on a planetary scale," Elias said, stepping down from the crawler platform onto the basalt ledge. His coat was unbuttoned against the heat, his white shirt collar open, but his expression remained entirely unfazed. "The liquid plasma streams aren’t lava. They are pure, molten heavy-element conductors pulled straight from the planet’s outer core."

"Master Elias!" Marcus yelled from the instrument desk, his voice high with panic. "The gravity meter is going wild! The local gravitational pull at this ledge is fluctuating between point-seven and one-point-four Gs every time the outer ring rotates!"

"The rotating magnets are creating a localized gravitational distortion to isolate the core sphere from tectonic shifts," Elias observed, pulling his silver slide rule from his vest pocket. He held it out toward the floating sphere, sighting along its polished edge. "Look at the rotation speed of the outer ring, Marcus."

Marcus squinted through his spyglass at the giant horseshoe magnets passing by in their silent orbit. "They’re... they’re slowing down!"

"Precisely," Elias said. "The outer ring is losing rotational momentum because the primary intake port at the upper pole is clogged with fifty years of unrefined silicate slag."

High atop the floating sphere, three hundred feet above their position, a massive intake hopper, designed to collect and refine the subterranean mineral flow was choked by a dark, jagged mass of fused quartz and iron ore fifty feet high.

Because the intake was blocked, the molten plasma streams supporting the sphere were becoming turbulent. Great, forty-foot arches of blinding white heat were breaking off from the main streams, slamming into the cavern walls and threatening to collapse the delicate magnetic field holding the entire five-hundred-thousand-ton Vault in mid-air.

"If that magnetic field collapses," Jacob said, his face pale under the amber light, "the sphere drops into the core mantle... and takes the entire continent down with it."

Section IV: The Zero-Gravity Approach

"Jacob, lock the crawler’s rear winches to the stone floor with the pneumatic ice anchors!" Elias commanded, his voice slicing through the heavy, pulsing roar of the cavern. "We need a stable anchor point for a high-tension cable!"

"Anchors going in!" Jacob shouted, slamming a foot pedal that drove two heavy tungsten steel spikes deep into the basalt ledge with a deafening BANG-BANG.

Elias strapped a lightweight iron harness across his chest, clipping a thin, high-tensile steel cable to his belt. He attached his portable induction torch to his right wrist and checked the battery levels.

Lira leaped onto his shoulder, her golden crystal flaring into a brilliant shield that wrapped around them both, insulating them from the roaring thermal radiation of the plasma streams below.

"You can’t jump that gap, Master Elias!" Marcus screamed over the rising hum of the rotating magnets. "The gravitational flux between the ledge and the sphere will tear you apart or throw you straight into the plasma!"

"It will throw me if I try to jump across the vector," Elias said, his golden eyes calculating the precise trajectory of the passing horseshoe magnets. "Which is why I’m not jumping across it. I’m riding the gravitational wave."

Elias turned to Jacob. "When the next magnet passes the center mark, fire the steam-winch cable!"

Jacob held the winch release lever, his knuckles white, his eyes fixed on the giant bronze horseshoe magnet sweeping toward them through the dark. "Three... two... one... NOW!"

Jacob slammed the lever down.

The steam winch fired with a high-pitched CRACK, launching a heavy iron grapple hook straight across the eight-hundred-foot abyss toward the upper rim of the floating sphere.

Elias did not wait for the grapple to seat. He leaped straight off the stone precipice into the open air.

For a terrifying three seconds, gravity ceased to exist.

Elias floated through the empty space between the ledge and the sphere, weightless in the thermal updrafts, surrounded by Lira’s brilliant golden aura. The giant horseshoe magnet passed directly beneath him, its immense magnetic field catching the iron harness on his chest and accelerating him upward like an arrow shot from a bow.

The grapple hook caught the rim of the upper intake hopper with a heavy iron CLANG.

Elias landed light-footed on the curved top of the floating sphere, three hundred feet above the plasma streams. He immediately dropped to one knee, driving his induction torch straight into the base of the silicate slag clogging the main intake.

"Lira! Acoustic inversion at fifty thousand Hertz!" Elias yelled.

Lira chimed, a piercing, blinding beam of golden kinetic energy that struck the red-hot silicate mass simultaneously with the blue flame of Elias’s torch.

The fifty-foot mass of fused quartz didn’t shatter outward. Under the combined acoustic and thermal inversion, the crystalline structure of the slag reorganized itself in a fraction of a second, collapsing inward into fine, powdery quartz dust.

The massive intake hopper cleared instantly.

FZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ-ROAR!

The accumulated mineral dust was sucked down into the core sphere’s internal refining furnaces. The turbulent plasma streams supporting the sphere instantly smoothed out, locking into four perfect, laminar columns of glowing gold.

The outer ring of horseshoe magnets accelerated back to its precise operational speed, its rhythmic, heavy pulse stabilizing into a smooth, silent hum.

The sphere ceased its erratic wobble, locking into perfect, static levitation in the exact center of the abyssal cavern.

Section V: The Master Core

Twenty minutes later, the floating sphere deployed an automated bronze gangway that extended across the eight-hundred-foot gap, locking onto the stone landing precipice with a series of quiet mechanical clamps.

Jacob and Marcus walked across the narrow bridge, their eyes wide as they stepped onto the smooth, vibration-free surface of the Master Core Vault.

Elias stood beside the cleared intake hopper, wiping a smudge of dark soot from his silver slide rule with his linen handkerchief. Lira sat on his shoulder, her forehead crystal glowing with a deep, serene emerald light that illuminated the pristine interior of the vault chamber below.

Inside the open viewport of the central sphere, a single, massive crystal core, ten times larger than Lira’s, floated in a bath of pure, liquid gold light. It was turning with a slow, magnificent precision, sending steady, harmonious energy pulses out through the subterranean conduit network to every corner of the world.

"The core wasn’t failing, Elias," Jacob said softly, looking through the viewport at the turning gold heart of the planet. "It was just waiting for someone to clear the intake."

"It was waiting for a system that could balance the surface before opening the deep vaults," Elias corrected gently, slipping his slide rule back into his vest pocket over his heart.

Marcus opened his ledger, writing a single, final entry at the top of the blank page.

"Location: The Master Core Vault," Marcus read aloud, his voice steady and filled with quiet pride. "System Status: Unified. Equilibrium: Absolute."

Elias walked to the edge of the bronze gangway, looking out across the vast, subterranean cavern where the golden plasma streams burned bright in the darkness, powering a world that had finally learned to move in harmony with its own deep heart.

Lira purred softly against his cheek, her crystal casting a warm, green light across the ancient stone.

Elias smiled quietly, resting his hand on the smooth iron handrail.

"The engine is open, Jacob," Elias said into the quiet, beautiful light. "Now... let’s see where it takes us."
