Chapter 295 287
Author's Notes: Chapter edited and corrected by Vongrak.
Izumi POV. – November 19.
"Is everything alright?" Taylor asked as she approached my side. I just kept staring straight ahead, perched on the edge of the destroyer's aft deck. My feet dangling over the ocean would have been a better view, if not for the safety railings blocking my view. Apparently, safety was necessary.
Jeju Island grew larger as we approached. I sighed once more and glanced at Taylor. We were both fully dressed in our hero costumes: she in her spooky outfit and haori, though she hadn't yet put on her mask, and I in my kimono. I slammed my fist on the seat next to me. Taylor paused for a few seconds before sitting down in the same position. Then I took one of her gloved hands.
"That's my question, you're trembling." I said gently to Taylor. Taylor shuddered slightly before gripping my hand tightly.
"I'm... nervous," Taylor confessed with a sigh. "And I don't have as many insects as I'd like in the middle of the ocean to drop my emotions into," she added dryly. I chuckled.
Today was the raid on Jeju Island. It was practically less than an hour away. We, and all the other hunters, were being assigned to our respective positions. Taylor and I had been put aboard a Destroyer along with the other Japanese hunters.
We stood out considerably in the crowd. Goto and the others were wearing their black Draw Sword uniforms, making them easy to spot, and the other hunters who had fallen back were wearing armor. So, the two of us really stood out.
"Everything will be alright?" Taylor asked gently. I stopped and looked back at Jeju.
"I have no idea," I sighed wearily as I looked at Jeju. "I'm... able to sense it. The special ant I mentioned is there, on the island. It's dangerous." I told Taylor without hesitation. She stiffened.
"Good, good, good, good. I was hoping you'd be wrong." Mai said, almost trembling. She had her sword form to escape view and was resting gently on my lap.
"Me too." Taylor said as she squeezed my hand tighter.
"Me three." I sighed wearily. "She's dangerous. If you run into that monster, and I'm not there, don't let your guard down. I won't tell you to run away—you won't be able to—just stay alive long enough for me to arrive." I told Taylor seriously.
"Do you think they'll separate us?" Taylor asked, frowning. I sighed.
"Oh, they will. They want to kill us. The best way is to separate us," I said bluntly. Then I looked away as I sensed someone approaching and remained silent. I also signaled to Taylor. Within seconds, we heard footsteps drawing nearer.
"Miyamura," Goto said, approaching. We both turned and looked at her. Goto frowned before looking at Taylor. "You're going with the Korean group," she said directly. I raised an eyebrow as Taylor quickly stood up.
"With the Koreans? The anthill group to kill the queen? " Taylor asked quickly, surprised. Goto just nodded.
"Your quirk is the most suitable for that part of the operation. We will lure the ants away from the anthill as planned, the Korean group must infiltrate and find the queen and kill her as soon as possible so they can come and help us."
"Your quirk grants you localized omniscience, if I recall correctly, and it also works against the ants themselves. You're one of the best scouts in the group. With your help, the Koreans will be able to find the queen as quickly as possible. Understood? " Goto asked, though it sounded more like an order. Taylor seemed conflicted before nodding firmly.
"Understood, ma'am," Taylor finally said with a sigh. Goto just nodded and looked at me.
"You'll be with Tawata on Team Bravo. Follow her orders," Goto commanded without hesitation before turning and walking away without waiting for a response from me. I just smiled, amused.
"Yes, Ma'am," I said mockingly, even though she probably wouldn't hear me. Taylor almost growled before sighing and sitting back down. Then she leaned close to me.
"You were right, they separated us," Taylor said, frustrated. I laughed.
"Don't be surprised. I'm always right," I said playfully. Both Taylor and Mai snorted.
"That's the worst part," Mai said dryly. I snorted and rolled my eyes.
"Besides, we weren't going to stay together anyway. The mutant ant is out there; it'll attack the Japanese groups first. I was going to split up with you to save them," I told her honestly. Taylor just nodded.
"Do you know what the plan is to kill the Koreans? Us?" Taylor asked in a low voice.
"The Koreans? It's quite simple. Draw Sword doesn't have any body cameras, so they have free rein to act however they like. As Goto mentioned, their job is to lure as many insects as possible away from the anthill. All Goto and the others would have to do is back off, hide, and the insects would return to the anthill once again."
"The ants will sense when the queen is attacked, then waves of ants will flood the Koreans from all sides. Easy, clean, and you can't hide it from the Japanese. Not much." I said, shrugging. "That they put you there is a surprise."
"She probably wants you to die with the Koreans, and she definitely knows about your insects, so she's counting on you not being able to control them all at once, or that you'll be overwhelmed after a certain point, or that your quirk will fail first." I said, wrinkling my nose. "Have your records been updated regarding your training with the nullifier?" I asked.
"No," Taylor said, shaking her head. "Or I shouldn't. I've told the Principal about my progress, but there's no way he would have mentioned it or even written it in any report," she said with complete certainty. I nodded with a hum.
"So they're flying blind and hoping for the best," I said dryly. "Although... it's also possible that in the 'best' case scenario, if you survive and the Koreans don't, they'll be able to pin it all on you somehow."
"Your career would practically be over," I said, frowning. "Being the only one to survive a monster ant attack, while everyone else died from the same ants, would be far too incriminating. You wouldn't be accused of incompetence or negligence, but outright murder. Especially since, in that case, Koreans will want blood, no matter what."
"In any case, you lose." I said with a grimace. Taylor just grunted in annoyance.
"So, you'll be going with Huntress Tawata," Taylor finally said. I hummed softly.
"That's how I'll graze." I said, shrugging. Taylor just stared at Jeju Island.
"Only with Huntress Tawata?" she asked, confused. I took out my scroll before reviewing all the information. The mission information had been updated.
"Team Bravo, Tawata and Miyamura. Yes. Just us." Confirm with a frown.
"Do they want to separate you from the group? Why put you alone with Huntress Tawata? She's on our side," Taylor said, confused. Mai snorted.
"She's not on our side, she hates Izumi," Mai said playfully. I rolled my eyes.
"She doesn't hate me, I'm a sweetheart," I said playfully.
"She hates you," Taylor said without hesitation. "So, well, not on our side, but not on Goto's side either. She didn't seem to know anything about the whole thing, and as much as she hates you, I doubt she wants to kill you." Taylor said, and I hummed softly.
"Honestly, I have no idea. Like I said, there are no cameras on the Japanese side. They can act however they want," I said, shrugging.
"I suppose they want to put you next to Tawata because you know her. A... false sense of security? You did your internships with her. You've shown that you know her and hold her in... 'esteem,' let's say, so you'll be more comfortable around her," Taylor said, starting to mutter. "I don't think Tawata will stab you in the back, no, but after your training with the huntress Sung Jinwoo, Goto might be more wary."
"Without that, she might have added you to her group. A way of saying they were 'taking care' of Ryumna's grandson personally. Or at least, that was the plan. And then she would kill you. But you would be fully on guard in Goto's group, so you wouldn't be easy to ambush. With Tawata, they want you to let your guard down."
"They'll attack at some point. During the raid, or during the retreat. And they'll probably use me. They'll wait for me to 'die,' and then when you go to save me, they'll either let you die or kill you anyway, and they'll just say that's what happened. It'll just go down as some very emotional teenage boy who committed suicide when his wife was murdered. Just another tragic event," Taylor said, quickly suppressing her anger.
"Relax," I told Taylor playfully. "Even if that's their plan, it won't work," I said gently. Taylor just took a heavy breath before calming down. "You'll have to go with the Koreans soon, so... let's enjoy the view for a while," I added, gazing out at the ocean. Taylor just snorted, but still, she calmed down beside me. She took my hand again, and I tightened my grip slightly. Mai was still resting on my lap. Yes, I wouldn't let anything happen.
"Wait!" Taylor said, straightening up almost in a panic. "I don't speak Korean! How am I supposed to work with them?!" Taylor asked, panicked. I burst out laughing and Mai quickly joined in. "Izumi! It's serious!" I don't even know if any of them speak English ! Stop laughing! Izumi, for the love of—"

Taylor POV.
I admitted it, Jinx was a freaking genius. I absolutely loved my new hoverboard. A silly grin spread across my face as I soared through the sky with complete freedom. I could feel the hoverboard consuming a bit of my aura. Just a tiny amount of my reserves, but it was worth every ounce of aura spent.
According to Jinx, the expense would be too much for anyone with a B-rank aura or lower, and even for an A-rank it would be a complete waste, since the design wasn't optimized enough yet. But for my aura level, it was barely a marginal expense in exchange for being able to fly freely in the air.
The hoverboard had the same design as Tanya's and Visha's: a ski on a metal boot. The ski was still a bit long, sticking out half a meter forward and half a meter back, and that was as much length as Jinx could shorten for the time being.
Walking in them was a little awkward, but who needed to walk when you could fly? That was a minor problem.
Well, not so minor. It was difficult to fight against something like that. I couldn't bend my foot properly, so it severely reduced my ground mobility, making it quite annoying to fight with.
I continued flying through the sky, surrounded by my swarm, with complete freedom. There was absolutely nothing around me. I was in mid-air with the ocean below me. Absolute freedom. My swarm buzzed around me, keeping pace as I flew peacefully.
Unfortunately, I finally reached the ship I needed to reach. I landed not so gracefully, which means I fell hard onto the aircraft carrier's deck. My swarm descended around me, and I let them rest on the deck. The ship was moving, slowly, but there was no need to tire my insects out keeping up when it wasn't necessary.
"Miyamura-san, please come with me, the transport is about to take off," a woman said in English as she approached. I could see her shiver slightly as she looked at my insects. And she wasn't the only one; everyone moving around on the boat flinched at my insects and moved slightly away. I nodded and started walking, making sure to lift and turn my foot properly with my ski.
I saw the twin-rotor military helicopter ready to take off at any minute. I could feel the wind from the rotors as they spun faster and faster.
"The other hunters have already boarded," said the woman who was guiding me, then she looked at me shyly and with a grimace. "We... didn't think you'd be bringing insects with you, we haven't prepared anything for them," she said nervously. I stared at her and shook my head.
"It's not necessary," I said easily. I tapped my foot twice before a small, plump toad emerged from my shadows. It then hopped onto my shoulder before opening its mouth. My swarm flew back and gathered above me before I directed them toward the toad's mouth, keeping my swarm within Izumi's shadows once more.
This thing was actually really useful. I think Izumi's distance test didn't work from country to country; they disappeared somewhere halfway to Korea. But as long as I was within Izumi's range, I'd have access to my entire swarm. After a few seconds, my swarm was completely hidden in the shadows, and I just nodded.
"Okay." I told the woman who looked a little pale and very confused as I watched the plump toad hide in my shadows once again.
I ignored her before looking at the helicopter. I moved my foot that had the ski. I flexed it back before striking the tip of the ski against the ground. The ski detached from the boot. I grabbed it with one hand and placed it on my back under my haori. Then I walked toward the helicopter and got in.
As soon as I stepped inside, I could feel all eyes on me. Every single S-rank Korean huntress was staring at me. And I barely had any insects to trigger my reactions; I only had a few spiders on my body, hidden beneath my haori.
"Sorry for the delay." I said in English as they all stared at me before one of them smiled broadly.
"Come on! Don't just stand there! It's about to take off!" The huntress said with a huge smile. I almost sighed with relief hearing her speak in English as I cautiously entered and took my seat. Just then, the helicopter took off and we began flying towards Jeju. "I'm Ma Dongwook, it's a pleasure to meet you properly!" said the huntress Ma with a huge smile. I nodded.
"I'm Taylor Miyamura, it's a pleasure and an honor to work with you." I introduced myself and bowed slightly.
"Ha! No need to be so formal, girl! We're about to fight for our lives! Don't worry about things like formality!" the woman said cheerfully. I just nodded. To my surprise, the others began introducing themselves in the same way.
"And since we're introducing ourselves, I suppose it's my turn," said the last woman, wearing a military uniform and a helmet with a camera on her head. "I'm the camerawoman for the official hunters' reporting center. As the title says, I'm in charge of filming the hunters."
"This raid will be broadcast live on television. You also won't have to worry too much about mistakes since the broadcast will have a 10-second delay; the editing team can cut those parts out for you," the camerawoman said cheerfully. I blinked.
"Oh, excuse me, will they need to speak Korean if this is being broadcast?" I asked uncertainly. The camerawoman had spoken in English, but I doubted that all Korean citizens could do that. To my surprise, the camerawoman shook her head.
"It won't be necessary. As I said, a 10-second delay. This will be broadcast internationally. There are people who will be adding English subtitles for broadcasts outside the country; it will be easy to add Korean subtitles for when you speak. So don't hesitate to speak if it's important," the camerawoman said quickly. I just nodded in relief.
After that, I listened to them talking. To my surprise, most of them spoke in English. And it was more than obvious that it was for my benefit, since I was the only one who didn't speak Korean. I could only look at them in gratitude.
"By the way," said Huntress Cha, looking at me intently, "you're the husband of the boy who fought Huntress Sung, aren't you? Ryuma-sama's grandson?" Huntress Cha asked, and everyone stared at me. And I nodded.
"Yes, I am. I'm Izumi Miyamura's wife," I confirmed. Huntress Cha leaned forward.
"Your husband doesn't smell," said huntress Cha, her eyes wide. I stopped stiffly, as did everyone else, and we looked at her strangely.
"Did you smell... my husband?" I asked, looking at her strangely and cautiously. Huntress Cha, blinked before her eyes opened, then blushed deeply.
"Not like that! Not in any weird way! " exclaimed the huntress Cha in a panic.
"Of course, it's not unusual to go around smelling men," said Huntress Baek with a mocking smile.
"Huntress Baek!" exclaimed Huntress Cha, embarrassed. "You know what I mean!" she snapped before looking at me, almost panicked. "I can smell people's auras!" she explained quickly. My eyes widened slightly. "I'm extremely sensitive to it; most hunters and even monsters are unpleasant to me. Hunter Sung Jinwoo is the only one who doesn't really smell bad."
"Well, Ryuma Shimotsuki's grandson is also here now. But he... your husband, he didn't really have any scent at all. I couldn't sense his aura, even while he was fighting the hunter Sung." She explained, surprised.
"You're smelling Hunter Sung too, huh, Huntress Cha? You're even more shameless than I expected," Huntress Baek said with a wide smile. Huntress Cha's eyes widened before she blushed even more.
"That's not true! I can't help but smell them! I can smell it from far away! " growled Huntress Cha.
"That doesn't make it sound any better, you know that, right? " asked Huntress Baek, laughing. Huntress Cha just blushed more, and the others burst out laughing. Even I smiled slightly, too.
"Do you have a sensory quirk? Does it enhance your sense of smell? " I asked curiously. Huntress Cha sighed in relief as we changed the subject.
"No. My quirk allows me to imbue my body and weapons with light that enhances and increases all my abilities and the strength of my attacks. I'm simply able to perceive auras like smells," said the huntress Cha. I nodded.
"Oh, what a shame, you're not like Ryuma, I suppose." I said absentmindedly. It was really interesting. I think the masked huntress from Draw Sword was the same. That two people could be sensitive to it was quite surprising. That they could perceive auras like smells was really strange. Could it be some kind of synesthesia?
"Just like Ryuma?" asked the huntress Cha, surprised. I froze, my eyes widening slightly. "Ryuma-sama can sense auras with his sense of smell?" asked the huntress Cha excitedly.
"Hae-In, you know we can't ask personal questions, especially those," said Huntress Choi seriously before glancing at the camera. Huntress Cha stopped stiffly.
"My apologies," said Huntress Cha, clearing her throat.
"And don't worry, I haven't even started filming yet," the camerawoman said quickly. I just nodded stiffly. I almost wanted to groan at my stupidity. I almost wanted to glare at Baek for interrupting her.
"Now, now, that's not necessary. It seems we're already here," said Huntress Ma with a smile. "Jeju Island." Her expression turned deadly serious.
I looked out one of the windows as we began to fly over Jeju. I took a deep breath.
The reconquest of Jeju begins.
