C27 - The Ancient Bell
The golden thread within the ancient stone tablet flickered only once.
Then it disappeared.
Deep beneath Azure Cloud Mountain, silence returned as though nothing had happened. Dust continued to settle upon the forgotten chamber, and the countless ancient runes carved into the walls became lifeless once more.
No alarm rang.
No elder rushed to investigate.
Only one thing had changed.
The old bronze bell hanging above the stone tablet gave the faintest tremor.
A single sound.
So soft that it resembled a sigh.
---
On the summit, the Heart Trial continued.
Candidate after candidate stepped onto the bridge.
Some emerged laughing.
Others returned in tears.
Many never reached the pavilion.
By sunset, only twenty-nine of the original seventy-three candidates had passed.
The remaining forty-four quietly descended the mountain.
No one mocked them.
The path of cultivation was cruel.
Failure today often meant survival tomorrow.
---
As the successful candidates gathered in the main square, Elder Mo addressed them.
"From this moment onward..."
His gaze swept across the young faces.
"...you are no longer guests."
"You are probationary disciples of the Azure Cloud Sect."
Several children clenched their fists in excitement.
Years of dreaming had finally become reality.
Elder Mo raised one finger.
"Do not celebrate yet."
His calm voice silenced the square.
"You have merely earned the right to begin."
---
The disciples were led toward the outer residence.
Unlike the magnificent halls visible from below the mountain, the outer disciple quarters were simple.
Rows of wooden houses stood neatly arranged along stone pathways.
A small stream flowed through the center, while training grounds occupied the eastern side.
Each room contained only a wooden bed, a meditation mat, a small table, and a single oil lamp.
Nothing more.
Ye Chen quietly placed his father's farming knife and wooden leaf pendant beside the lamp.
The room felt empty.
Yet peaceful.
---
That evening, all new disciples gathered for their first meal.
The dining hall buzzed with cautious conversation.
Ye Chen sat quietly in a corner.
A familiar voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts.
"May I sit here?"
He looked up.
It was the noble boy whose ankle he had bandaged on the staircase.
Without his luxurious robes, he appeared no different from everyone else.
"Of course."
The boy bowed respectfully.
"My name is Lu Jian."
"I never thanked you."
Ye Chen smiled faintly.
"There is nothing to thank me for."
"There is."
Lu Jian's expression became serious.
"If not for you..."
He lowered his eyes.
"...I would never have reached the summit."
Ye Chen shook his head.
"You climbed it yourself."
Lu Jian remained silent for several moments.
Finally, he laughed.
"No wonder Elder Han kept watching you."
Ye Chen froze.
"What do you mean?"
Lu Jian leaned closer.
"My father serves a county governor."
"I've seen Elder Han only twice."
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"He has never watched ordinary candidates."
Ye Chen frowned.
"Perhaps you're mistaken."
"Perhaps."
Lu Jian smiled.
"But I don't think so."
---
Before Ye Chen could respond, the dining hall suddenly became silent.
Three young disciples wearing dark-blue robes entered.
Unlike the newcomers, their robes bore silver cloud patterns along the sleeves.
Senior disciples.
The one walking in front appeared to be around seventeen years old.
Tall.
Handsome.
Confident.
His eyes casually swept across the room before stopping on Lu Jian.
"So."
He smiled.
"The governor's son made it."
Lu Jian stood respectfully.
"Senior Brother."
The young man nodded before his gaze shifted toward Ye Chen.
"And you are?"
"Ye Chen."
The senior disciple studied him for several moments.
"So you're the farmer."
The room grew noticeably quieter.
No mockery filled his voice.
Only curiosity.
"I heard you helped others during the examination."
Ye Chen answered honestly.
"I simply did what I believed was right."
The senior disciple smiled.
"Dangerous words."
He turned to leave.
"Remember them."
As he reached the doorway, he paused.
"The martial world rarely rewards people for doing the right thing."
Then he disappeared into the night.
---
After dinner, Ye Chen walked alone through the quiet courtyard.
The stars above Azure Cloud Mountain seemed brighter than those visible from the villages below.
He wondered if his mother was looking at the same sky.
He hoped she was safe.
As he stood beside the stream, he noticed an elderly groundskeeper sweeping fallen leaves.
The old man smiled without looking up.
"Can't sleep?"
Ye Chen smiled politely.
"Too many thoughts."
The groundskeeper chuckled.
"The mountain has that effect."
He continued sweeping.
"Do you know what people misunderstand about cultivation?"
Ye Chen shook his head.
"They think it's about becoming extraordinary."
The old man paused.
"It isn't."
He looked at the stars reflected in the flowing water.
"It's about refusing to remain ordinary."
Ye Chen considered those words carefully.
There was wisdom hidden within them.
When he looked up again...
The old groundskeeper had already disappeared.
Only the broom remained leaning against a tree.
A strange feeling settled in Ye Chen's heart.
The old man...
Hadn't left any footprints in the soft earth.
---
Far above the outer disciple quarters, Elder Han stood alone on a cliff overlooking the mountain.
A shadow emerged silently behind him.
It was the mysterious old wanderer.
"You rang the Ancient Bell."
The wanderer smiled.
"I merely awakened something that had been asleep."
Elder Han's expression remained calm.
"You know what lies beneath this mountain."
"I do."
"And yet..."
Elder Han turned to face him.
"...you brought that boy here."
The old wanderer's eyes reflected the countless stars above.
"I didn't bring him."
He smiled faintly.
"He was always walking toward this place."
For a long moment, neither man spoke.
Finally, the wanderer looked toward the outer disciple quarters where a single oil lamp still burned in Ye Chen's room.
"The first door has opened."
His smile slowly faded.
"Now we shall see..."
"...whether he walks through it..."
"...or is consumed by what waits beyond."
Far beneath Azure Cloud Mountain, hidden in the ancient chamber, one rune on the stone tablet glowed faintly in the darkness.
It resembled a single word.
Dao.
