Dao Eternal

C16 - Stone River Town

By the time the sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon, the mountains no longer felt endless.

The dense forest gradually gave way to gentler slopes, and the narrow trail widened into an old trade road worn smooth by countless carts and travelers. For the first time in days, the silence of the wilderness was replaced by distant human voices, the creaking of wagon wheels, and the occasional bark of a dog carried by the wind.

Gu Ming stopped atop a rocky outcrop and pointed into the valley below.

"There."

Ye Chen followed his finger.

Nestled between two low hills stood a modest town surrounded by a weathered stone wall no higher than three men. Smoke drifted lazily from dozens of chimneys, while farmers guided oxen through nearby fields. A river curved around the eastern side of the settlement before disappearing into the mountains they had just crossed.

Stone River Town.

It was neither grand nor prosperous, yet after everything they had endured, it looked almost like a sanctuary.

Lin Yue released a quiet sigh.

"We made it..."

The relief in her voice was impossible to hide.

Ye Chen wanted to feel the same comfort.

Instead, his gaze instinctively searched the walls, the gates, the watchtowers, and every road leading into the town.

A home could become a battlefield overnight.

He had learned that lesson too well.

---

The guards at the southern gate wore faded leather armor and carried simple spears. They inspected passing merchants more out of routine than suspicion.

When Gu Ming approached, one of the guards smiled.

"Back already? Find anything valuable?"

"Enough herbs to keep the physicians happy for another week."

The guard laughed before noticing Ye Chen and Lin Yue.

"Refugees?"

Gu Ming nodded.

"They escaped the northern raid."

The guard's smile disappeared.

"So the rumors were true..."

He looked at the mother and son for a long moment before stepping aside.

"Welcome to Stone River Town."

No questions.

No payment.

Only weary sympathy.

---

Inside the walls, the streets bustled with ordinary life.

Blacksmiths hammered glowing iron beneath open workshops.

Children chased one another through narrow alleys.

Vendors called out the prices of fresh vegetables, salted fish, and steaming meat buns.

For everyone here, it was simply another afternoon.

To Ye Chen, it felt like entering another world.

Life...

Continued.

Even after an entire village had vanished.

The realization unsettled him.

The world did not stop for grief.

---

Gu Ming led them through several winding streets until they reached a modest herbal clinic built from dark cedar wood.

Bundles of dried plants hung beneath the eaves, filling the courtyard with the fragrance of mint, ginseng, and unfamiliar medicines.

An elderly physician looked up from sorting herbs.

"You're late."

"I met some people who needed help."

The old physician glanced toward Ye Chen and Lin Yue.

His experienced eyes immediately noticed their soot-stained clothing, exhausted faces, and swollen ankle.

Without asking a single question, he simply said,

"Bring them inside."

---

That evening, Lin Yue's ankle was carefully treated, and both she and Ye Chen were given warm rice porridge.

It was the first hot meal they had eaten since fleeing the village.

Ye Chen held the bowl with both hands.

The steam rose gently before his face.

He suddenly remembered another bowl...

His mother serving breakfast.

His father teasing him for eating too slowly.

The memory struck without warning.

His appetite vanished.

The physician quietly sat beside him.

"Food tastes different after loss."

Ye Chen looked up.

The old man smiled sadly.

"I know."

There was no explanation.

None was needed.

---

Night settled over Stone River Town.

Gu Ming slept in the courtyard after promising to help the physician the following morning.

Lin Yue, exhausted beyond words, finally fell into a peaceful sleep.

Only Ye Chen remained awake.

Unable to rest, he stepped outside.

The streets were quiet beneath the moonlight.

As he wandered aimlessly, he found himself standing before a weathered stone monument near the center of town.

Carved into its surface were dozens of names.

Some fresh.

Others nearly erased by time.

An old woman tending a nearby lantern noticed his curiosity.

"Those are the names of people who died protecting this town."

Ye Chen read the inscriptions silently.

Farmers.

Hunters.

Merchants.

None were famous.

None were cultivators.

Yet someone had taken the time to ensure they would not be forgotten.

The old woman adjusted the lantern.

"A person's life ends only when no one remembers their name."

Ye Chen stood before the monument for a long time.

Finally, he whispered into the night,

"Ye Shan."

Then another name.

"Lin Liu."

Old Liu.

Then another.

And another.

One by one, he spoke the names of everyone he could remember from Green Willow Village.

The names drifted into the quiet night like prayers.

No one answered.

Yet for the first time since the attack...

He no longer feared that his home would disappear completely.

As long as someone remembered...

It still existed.

High above Stone River Town, unseen among the dark clouds, a pair of cold eyes silently observed the young boy below.

"A remarkable heart..."

the unseen figure murmured.

"But in this world..."

His voice faded into the wind.

"...a kind heart alone cannot survive."
