Dao Eternal

C2 - A New Beginning

Consciousness returned like a feather drifting upon an endless sea.

Ye Chen could neither open his eyes nor move his body. His thoughts floated in a strange haze, as though he had awakened from a dream only to fall into another. The cold rain, the blinding headlights, and the deafening crash lingered within his fading memories, refusing to disappear. He remembered the frightened little girl, the warmth of her small hand as he pulled her from danger, and the overwhelming pain that followed.

He also remembered dying.

There was no doubt about it.

Death had been absolute.

Yet if death had truly claimed him, why could he still think?

A dull throbbing echoed around him, slow and rhythmic, accompanied by a distant heartbeat that did not seem to belong to him alone. Warmth surrounded his body from every direction, comforting and strangely familiar. His limbs felt weightless, suspended within a soft embrace that carried the scent of earth after rain.

Time lost its meaning.

Moments blended into hours, and hours into days. He drifted between consciousness and sleep, unable to distinguish dreams from reality. Sometimes he heard muffled voices. At other times, gentle laughter reached him through the darkness, followed by a woman's soothing hum that carried an indescribable tenderness.

He could not understand the words.

The language was unlike anything he had ever heard, yet it possessed a strange rhythm that gradually became less foreign each time he listened.

As his awareness grew stronger, fragments of emotion seeped into his heart.

Warmth.

Safety.

Anticipation.

Someone was waiting for him.

Then came a force unlike anything he had ever experienced.

The peaceful darkness around him suddenly tightened. The world trembled violently as an immense pressure squeezed his body from every direction. Instinct compelled him to struggle, and before he understood what was happening, the comforting warmth vanished.

A brilliant light pierced his tightly shut eyes.

Cold air rushed into his lungs with unbearable force.

He instinctively gasped.

A loud cry escaped his lips.

The sound startled even himself.

It was the cry of a newborn.

"...A son!"

The unfamiliar words rang clearly this time, though he could not explain why he understood them.

Relief filled the trembling voice.

Another pair of gentle hands carefully wrapped him in soft cloth before lifting him into warm arms.

Ye Chen forced his eyes open.

His vision was blurred, revealing only vague outlines illuminated by flickering candlelight. Gradually, the world came into focus.

A woman, pale from exhaustion yet smiling through tears, gazed down at him with boundless affection. Her face was young, worn only by the hardships of rural life, while her eyes held the quiet strength of someone who had endured countless struggles without complaint.

Beside her stood a broad-shouldered man dressed in rough linen clothes stained with mud from the fields. His weathered hands bore countless calluses, and tears glistened in eyes that had likely not wept in many years.

The man carefully reached out with trembling fingers, touching the child's tiny hand as though afraid it might disappear.

"He has your eyes," the woman whispered with a weary smile.

The man shook his head gently.

"No," he replied. "He has Heaven's blessing."

Ye Chen stared silently at the two strangers.

Their faces carried no trace of deceit or calculation.

Only genuine joy.

Only unconditional love.

For reasons he could not understand, something deep within his heart trembled.

He had spent his previous life chasing deadlines beneath fluorescent lights, surrounded by strangers whose names he barely remembered. His parents had passed away years earlier, and though he had friends and colleagues, life had gradually become an endless routine of work, sleep, and tomorrow.

No one had ever looked at him the way these two people looked at him now.

Not because of what he had achieved.

Not because of what he could offer.

Simply because he existed.

A quiet warmth spread through his chest.

Perhaps...

This life would be different.

Outside the small wooden house, dawn slowly painted the eastern sky in shades of gold. Mist drifted lazily across endless fields of rice, while distant mountains stood silently beneath the first rays of sunlight. Roosters crowed from neighboring farms, and smoke curled gently from the chimneys of scattered cottages nestled among the fertile plains.

The world was peaceful.

Simple.

Untouched by the towering cities and endless noise he had once known.

As Ye Chen listened to the sounds of this unfamiliar land, an inexplicable feeling settled within him.

He had left one life behind.

Another had quietly begun.

Far beyond the distant mountains, hidden behind seas of clouds where no ordinary mortal could ever tread, an ancient bronze bell suspended within a forgotten temple trembled ever so slightly.

Its sound was almost imperceptible.

One soft chime.

Then silence returned.

No one in the world noticed.

No one except the old fisherman, who slowly raised his head toward the heavens and closed his eyes with a faint smile, as though greeting an old friend whose arrival had been awaited for far longer than history itself could remember.
