Chapter 206: He Came to the Door
Su Zhaozhao instinctively tried to shut the door, but the person on the other side had already grabbed it and pulled it open.
He smiled at Su Zhaozhao. "Zhaozhao, long time no see. You’ve gotten even more beautiful."
As he spoke, his pale eyes stared at her intently, as if trying to sear her image into his very soul.
Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but take two steps back. "What are you doing here?"
’I knew it. That bad feeling I had was bound to come true!’
After seeing Xu Jiaxin, Su Zhaozhao had a feeling Xu Jiaming would show up, and sure enough, he did!
So soon.
But she still trusted Xu Jiaxin. It probably wasn’t Jiaxin who told him.
However, with her carefree personality, she had likely let something slip, and Xu Jiaming had caught on.
"It seems Zhaozhao isn’t happy to see me." Xu Jiaming’s gaze swept over every inch of Su Zhaozhao’s pretty face, and he let out a sigh. "Zhaozhao, your reaction is truly disappointing."
"If you’re so disappointed, then go back. Besides, your sister should have told you that I’m married, right?"
"I know," Xu Jiaming said, raising the items in his hand.
"That’s why I came to bring you a wedding gift."
Su Zhaozhao looked at the boxes he was carrying. They all looked like they were from high-end brands. Her eyes narrowed. "You really shouldn’t have..."
"You’re getting married, Zhaozhao. Of course I have to congratulate you."
"Zhaozhao, who is it?"
Li Chunhong asked as she walked out of the house.
She was a little surprised to see a strange young man standing in front of Su Zhaozhao. She didn’t recognize him.
"Hello, Grandma." Xu Jiaming greeted her before Su Zhaozhao could make an introduction. "I’m Jiaxin’s older brother, and a friend of Zhaozhao’s."
Su Zhaozhao: "..."
’Why is he calling her Grandma too!’
Su Zhaozhao shot a glare at Xu Jiaming. "Don’t just call her whatever you want."
"Zhaozhao has so many friends! Come on in and have some tea, young man," Li Chunhong had already said.
There was nothing Su Zhaozhao could do. She could only watch as Li Chunhong walked over to talk to Xu Jiaming.
And Xu Jiaming, for his part, was very poised and well-spoken when he answered Li Chunhong. He was a smooth talker.
"Grandma, you said you’re sixty-five this year? Oh my goodness! I never would have guessed. You look like you’re in your early fifties. You’ve taken such good care of yourself."
"Oh, stop. You’re quite the sweet-talker, young man. I don’t feel particularly young," Li Chunhong said with a chuckle.
You could tell that even though she didn’t entirely believe his words, she was clearly delighted by his flattery.
Su Zhaozhao: "..."
When Xu Jiaming met Xu Yingmin, he exchanged another round of pleasantries and presented his gifts.
"This is for you. It was a last-minute visit, so I didn’t bring much."
"You’re too kind, child," Li Chunhong said, waving her hand dismissively.
"Not at all. I heard from Jiaxin that she came over for dinner but didn’t bring a gift, so I couldn’t be so impolite. Jiaxin also mentioned that your cooking is amazing, Grandma."
"Well, in that case, why don’t you stay for dinner tonight?"
"Alright, then I won’t be shy."
"Don’t be, don’t be."
Su Zhaozhao: "..."
She could only watch as Xu Jiaming, with just a few well-chosen words, had her grandparents wrapped around his little finger.
And there was nothing she could do about it.
’You have to admit, Xu Jiaming is really something else.’
"Zhaozhao, it seems you have quite a few friends. That puts my mind at ease," Li Chunhong said, looking at Su Zhaozhao.
She had been worried that after everything Su Zhaozhao had been through, she would change, that her personality might sour and she wouldn’t make friends.
But now, it seemed she had been overthinking things.
Su Zhaozhao was still quite cheerful. ’This girl... did she raise herself this well all these years?’
She knew that Su Dashan and Zhang Fengxia most likely never bothered with Su Zhaozhao’s upbringing. It was a blessing they even gave her enough food to eat.
She felt very relieved.
"Yeah, they’re alright," Su Zhaozhao said with a forced smile.
’Seriously, this Xu Jiaming is exactly like he was described in the novel—the manipulative, sinister type who’s always lurking in the shadows, spying on others.’
’The only difference is, in the novel, he was supposed to be obsessed with the female lead, but now it’s me!’
Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but wonder, ’Will Xu Jiaming still fall for Gu Qingran in the future?’
’Honestly, I doubt it.’
’Gu Qingran isn’t the same female lead from the novel anymore. She’s become very strange. Xu Jiaming probably won’t follow the plot either...’
’Doesn’t that mean he’s going to be stuck on me now?’
’Absolutely not!’
They chatted for a while before Li Chunhong announced she was going out to buy groceries. Su Zhaozhao quickly said she would go with her.
Xu Jiaming suddenly said, "I’ve never been to a wet market in Jiang City. May I go with you?"
"Of course, you can, but the market is crowded and has a lot of strong smells. Are you sure you want to come along?" Li Chunhong asked, a little concerned.
"I’m sure."
And so, the three of them went to the market together.
On the way, Su Zhaozhao stuck close to Li Chunhong. Xu Jiaming walked beside her, but she ignored him.
When Li Chunhong went to pick out vegetables, Xu Jiaming finally said to Su Zhaozhao, "Are you that scared of me? Relax. You’re married now. What could I possibly do?"
Su Zhaozhao turned to look at Xu Jiaming. "Really?"
Xu Jiaming nodded. "Of course. Besides, Xie Huaizheng already taught me a lesson. If you ask me, your man might seem nice, but he’s not necessarily better than I am. He even stoops to using underhanded tactics. I was the one who saved you, yet he repaid my kindness with malice."
As he said this, Xu Jiaming couldn’t help but sigh, as if he were the one who had been terribly wronged.
"Stop trying to drive a wedge between us," Su Zhaozhao said, looking at him. "I think Huai Zheng is very measured in his actions. He keeps things separate."
Xu Jiaming was surprised that Su Zhaozhao knew about that.
Back then, Xie Huaizheng had someone mess with his family’s business. But then, just when he was overwhelmed and at his wit’s end, Xie Huaizheng sent a huge deal his way, helping him overcome the crisis and double his revenue.
But Xu Jiaming just thought Xie Huaizheng was insane.
He felt no gratitude toward Xie Huaizheng for it.
Xie Huaizheng had just used that opportunity to marry Su Zhaozhao as quickly as possible.
They were married, so now there was nothing he could do.
’But, Xie Huaizheng is a soldier...’
Xu Jiaming couldn’t help but ask, "Zhaozhao, where’s Xie Huaizheng? He didn’t come back with you?"
Su Zhaozhao glanced at him but didn’t answer.
’As if I’d tell him what Xie Huaizheng is doing.’
’Whatever it is, it’s none of his business.’
But even though she said nothing, Xu Jiaming was smart and guessed it in an instant.
"Hmm, he’s out on a mission, isn’t he?"
Su Zhaozhao looked at Xu Jiaming in surprise.
"Don’t look at me like that. Knowing his personality, there’s no way he would have let you travel so far by yourself."
