Chapter 198: The Family’s Sympathy
Su Zhaozhao was a bit stunned, looking at so many people.
Apparently, she hadn’t expected so many people to show up at once.
She had thought they all lived separately. After all, she hadn’t seen this many people when she first arrived.
Li Chunhong took Su Zhaozhao’s hand and led her over to them. "Zhaozhao, come. This is your eldest uncle and aunt."
Su Zhaozhao greeted them as she was told.
"This is your younger uncle and aunt. And these are your cousins."
Su Zhaozhao politely greeted them all as well.
Her eldest uncle, Xu Zhenguo, walked up to Su Zhaozhao and looked her up and down. "Girl, we haven’t been in touch for so many years. Why have you come back this time?"
They hadn’t seen Su Zhaozhao in a very, very long time.
The last time they had met was at her mother’s funeral.
After that, he had sometimes wanted to go see Su Zhaozhao, but Su Dashan always stopped them from meeting.
Plus, after the heartless things Su Zhaozhao had said before, they could only hold back and stop trying to see her.
In the blink of an eye, so many years had passed. The little girl from back then had blossomed into a lovely young woman.
Standing beside them, Xu Ziyang immediately piped up, "She must be here because she wants something from us!"
Although he didn’t hate Su Zhaozhao as much as he had at first, that didn’t mean he had accepted her.
Hmph! ’If this is going to cause trouble for me and my family, I’ll definitely shut it down.’
When Xu Zhenguo heard Xu Ziyang, he scolded him, "That’s rude. No one was asking you. Why are you butting in?"
He could tell that Xu Ziyang really disliked Su Zhaozhao, but no matter what, she was still his niece.
Back then, her rejection of them was due to the influence of adults. How could a child be blamed for that?
Besides, this time, he had taken a liking to Su Zhaozhao from the moment he saw her.
However, only Xu Zhenguo seemed to like Su Zhaozhao. His younger brother, Xu Yiheng, remained silent, merely staring at her quietly from the side.
Su Zhaozhao could, of course, sense the emotions in the gazes around her: some were kind and welcoming, some were angry and disgusted, and some were just silent, appraising stares.
But she had already prepared for the worst before coming. As it stood, reality didn’t seem as bad as she had imagined.
"Actually, you’re right. I did come here because there’s something I need to trouble you with."
"See? I knew it. She’s up to no good. Why would she ever think of us unless it was for something bad?" Xu Ziyang snorted, looking as if he’d guessed correctly.
Su Zhaozhao hadn’t expected to have to lay her cards on the table so soon, but she figured this was probably the only way to lower their guard.
"It’s like this. I’ve decided to sever ties with my father. He and his wife tried to sell me for a large sum of money. When I refused, I had them sent to the Public Security Bureau. But I’m worried that after he gets out, he’ll use our father-daughter relationship to emotionally blackmail me. So, I want to transfer my household registration to be under Grandpa and Grandma’s. Then I’ll go to the Public Security Bureau to have it notarized and officially sever our father-daughter relationship."
That way, Su Dashan would have no way to hold anything over her, neither morally nor legally.
The latter part was rather easy, since they had indeed harmed her. But the former—transferring her registration—required the consent of her grandparents and even the family members standing right in front of her.
The sarcastic words Xu Ziyang had been about to say to Su Zhaozhao died on his lips.
"You’re saying you want to sever ties with your dad?"
He had originally thought that perhaps Su Zhaozhao’s father was short on money and had sent her to their home to beg for it. He never imagined she wanted to cut ties with him.
Su Zhaozhao nodded. "Yes. If they hadn’t been so completely ruthless, I wouldn’t have made this decision."
As she said this, her gaze fell, and she looked utterly pitiful.
Combined with her naturally delicate appearance, she looked as if she had been bullied for many years.
Li Chunhong’s heart ached as she wrapped an arm around Su Zhaozhao’s shoulders. "Zhaozhao, you’ve truly suffered all these years."
’It must be,’ Li Chunhong thought, ’that after Su Zhaozhao’s father married a stepmother, her life became difficult.’
It was just that back then, whenever they asked about Su Zhaozhao, Su Dashan would brush them off, saying she was doing well at home and preventing them from meeting her.
And since they knew that Su Zhaozhao had a good relationship with her father, they eventually stopped asking so much.
But looking at Su Zhaozhao now, she had most likely been suffering all those years.
Seeing Su Zhaozhao’s pitiful state, Xu Ziyang opened his mouth, wanting to say something like, "Serves you right," but the words wouldn’t come out.
’Indeed,’ he thought. ’This cousin of mine may be detestable, but she’s also quite pathetic.’
’She lost her mother, had to survive under a stepmother, and is so pretty she must be coveted by countless men. And on top of all that, her own father tried to sell her.’
"That bastard Su Dashan!" Xu Zhenguo couldn’t help but roar, his fists clenched.
"Zhaozhao, are you saying that guy is still in jail?"
Su Zhaozhao nodded. It seemed there hadn’t been a formal sentencing yet. They were being held in a detention center, and she didn’t know how long the sentence would be.
But no matter the length of the sentence, they would get out sooner or later. She couldn’t bear the thought of them coming to disturb her life again.
"Good. It’s good that he’s locked up. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself from rushing over and beating him up!"
Li Chunhong gently stroked Su Zhaozhao’s head. "Zhaozhao, you poor child. Ai, you should have told your grandpa and grandma sooner."
"Exactly. You didn’t contact us all these years. We had no idea what your situation was."
Su Zhaozhao had a suffering she couldn’t put into words.
The original owner of this body would never have contacted them in her entire life, because that’s how her mother had raised her.
But this Su Zhaozhao was different. She had sorted through the original owner’s memories and realized that the relatives on her mother’s side weren’t bad people.
Plus, in her dreams, she saw that the original owner’s maternal grandparents looked exactly like her own grandparents from her past life.
That natural sense of kinship made Su Zhaozhao unable to stop herself from seeking them out.
Even knowing she would be scolded, she had shamelessly come anyway.
Thank goodness she had come.
"It’s okay. From now on, you’ll know," Su Zhaozhao said. "I’m the one who should be sorry. I haven’t contacted you all these years."
"Alright, that’s enough of that. Let’s eat. Zhaozhao, you don’t have to keep apologizing. This isn’t your fault," Xu Yingmin said. ’This girl has been apologizing ever since she arrived,’ he thought.
Even Xu Ziyang, who had been mocking Su Zhaozhao just moments before, chimed in, "Yeah, let’s eat, let’s eat! I’m starving."
He had mocked Su Zhaozhao too much earlier to back down so easily, so he could only say a few words to smooth things over.
They set up a large round table in the courtyard, and soon it was filled with dishes.
The feast had been prepared by Li Chunhong and the two aunts.
One of the aunts sat next to Su Zhaozhao and put some food on her plate. "Zhaozhao, eat more. Look how thin you are."
