My Dao to Eternity — Chapter 127

Chapter 127: The Ward That Went Quiet

Li Fan rejoined the southern road two hours after leaving the crevice, judging the risk of the crowd's attention lower than the risk of losing the road entirely in unfamiliar hill country after dark.

The current of refugees had thickened rather than thinned in his absence. Whole households moved together now, some driving carts piled high enough that the axles groaned with every rut, others carrying what they could on their own backs the way he was. He recognized a handful of faces from Myriad Craft City's better streets among them — not merchants or craftsmen this time, but the loose robes and jade tokens of outer sect families, people who six days ago would not have walked this road at all without an escort. Now they walked it the same as everyone else, dust on their hems, children carried on hips instead of servants' backs.

Nobody spoke much. The road itself had gone quiet in a way that had nothing to do with distance from the fighting, a silence made of too many people carrying too much fear to spend any of it on conversation.
