Chapter 14: The Song That Broke the Room
The corner of Professor Blackwood’s mouth curved in a way no one could quite read. She cleared her throat, and her cold, clear voice rang through the silent lecture hall.
“Tessa Vale.”
With that death sentence of a roll call, every eye in the lecture hall snapped toward the girl in the corner, who had instantly gone as stiff as a stone statue.
That included the cool figure standing by the back door.
Seraphina Frost.
Boom.
Tessa’s mind went blank, as if someone had dropped a depth charge into it. Her blood seemed to freeze in an instant. Her limbs went cold, and all she could hear was the violent pounding of her own heart, loud as a drum.
It was over.
It was really over.
Inside her mind, she was screaming in despair at a million times per second.
System! System, save me! Your queen is in danger!
The flashy chibi devil UI slowly popped into her mind, swaying its stick-figure little waist while that syrupy mature voice sounded again.
[Ding! Hehe. Detected that my dear Host is about to face the highest judgment of social death. Would you like to use the newly obtained [Voice of Heaven] Temporary Trial Card immediately?]
[Friendly reminder: Once used, you will possess a heavenly singing voice for ten minutes. Use that moist little throat of yours to conquer every hungry ear in this room.]
Use it! Now! Immediately!
Tessa screamed in her heart.
Under hundreds of gazes, Tessa felt like a prisoner being marched to public execution. Her legs no longer felt like they belonged to her. Weak and unsteady, she stood up from her seat step by step and walked toward the stage.
Today, she had been forced into a pure white dress with a very fitted cut.
The dress outlined every breathtaking curve of her body. Beneath that tiny waist was a sudden, full curve that made the boys in the room go dry-mouthed with every step she took. It felt as if each footfall landed directly on their hearts.
At last, she stood on the stage in front of Professor Blackwood.
Professor Blackwood pushed up her glasses and looked Tessa over from head to toe with an extremely sharp gaze. Her voice was cold when she spoke.
“Miss Vale, I reviewed your admissions file. Your entrance score for the major was ranked first. Now, let me see your ability. Let me see whether beneath that beautiful exterior lies a heavenly voice, or… disappointing noise.”
“Sing something a cappella. Your choice.”
Tessa took a deep breath and silently thought, Activate the trial card.
[Ding! [Voice of Heaven] Temporary Trial Card activated. Remaining time: 9 minutes, 59 seconds. Please display your charm to the fullest, Host.]
A strange sensation rushed through her entire body. It felt as if her throat had been remade by invisible divine hands, filling it with power and technique she had never possessed before.
Then, in the very next second, she fell into a despair a hundred times deeper than before.
This stupid card had only given her world-class technique and perfect vocal control. But her mind did not contain a single song from this world.
What could she sing?
She only knew songs from the world she had come from.
System, you useless scammer! You tricked me!
Tessa roared inwardly again.
You gave me the best driver in the world but no software library. What am I supposed to sing? Happy New Year? A wedding song?
The system giggled in her head, its voice so smug it was practically dripping.
[Oh my, dear Host. Don’t be so rigid. Wouldn’t it be more interesting to give these sheltered mortals a tiny cultural shock from another world?]
[Think about it. A song that has never appeared in this world, an “original” that belongs only to you. How much high-purity “Amazement” and “Adoration” could that earn you? This is a great deal, dear.]
The system’s temptation was like a devil’s whisper, and Tessa’s heart suddenly stirred.
She lifted her eyes and looked toward the audience. Some people were curious. Some were expectant. Some were waiting to watch her fail. Finally, her gaze passed through the crowd and landed on Seraphina, who stood quietly by the back door with gentle eyes.
Right.
Her.
No matter what the reason was, this upperclassman had been the first person in this strange world to let Tessa feel a complicated kind of warmth.
Then she would sing for her.
Tessa hardened her heart and made her choice.
She would sing the song she had looped countless times before crossing worlds, the one almost carved into her soul.
[Alaska Bay].
She slowly closed her eyes and pressed down all her nerves, fear, and insecurity.
When she opened them again, those watery amber eyes held only endless loneliness, confusion, and a hidden trace of attachment even she had not noticed.
She did not look at anyone else.
She only gazed from afar in Seraphina’s direction, as if the entire world had narrowed down to the two of them.
She decided to pour every emotion she had carried since arriving in this world into this song.
No accompaniment.
No microphone.
In the silence where even a falling pin could be heard, her red lips parted slightly.
Her voice flowed out, ethereal, pure, and touched with a fragile heartbreak, like a stream under moonlight.
“God above…”
It was only three words.
A soft opening, carrying both prayer and a sigh.
Yet that voice, almost too divine to belong to the human world, seized every throat in the room like an invisible hand.
The entire hall went dead silent.
Everyone’s face froze in disbelief, as if they had seen something impossible.
That… was Tessa’s voice?
The sound seemed almost tangible. Like the finest, smoothest silk, it brushed gently over everyone’s skin, raising goosebumps they could not control.
The song continued to flow, carrying a suppressed hurt and unwillingness.
“Can’t you see how much I love her…”
“Why would you tear apart…”
“Two people who clearly love each other…”
Line after line cut through the sugar coating called ambiguity like sharp knives, revealing the bleeding sincerity beneath.
Everyone was stunned.
This was a song none of them had ever heard before. The beautiful, sorrowful melody, the lyrics that struck straight into the soul, and that voice that seemed capable of cleansing the heart shattered everyone’s defenses in an instant.
Many students had already subconsciously decided that this had to be Tessa’s original song. Several students sitting in the back no longer cared about Professor Blackwood’s authority. With trembling hands, they quietly raised their phones and started recording, ready to upload this miracle-like moment online as soon as possible.
On the stage, Professor Blackwood, famous for her strictness and brutal tongue, lost her composure in class for the first time.
At some point, she had taken off her glasses. Her eyes, usually sharp with judgment and criticism, were now faintly red. When she looked at Tessa, there was only deep, inescapable shock and disbelief.
At the back door of the classroom, Seraphina’s body had gone completely stiff.
She had been struck clean through.
To her, this unknown love song, filled with endless sorrow and longing, was no ordinary song at all.
This was Tessa confessing to her in a hidden, intense, unbearably emotional way.
Confessing the love she could not say aloud because of identity, because of gender, because of that forceful Riley Summers, because of all the things standing between them.
“God above, can’t you see how much I love her.”
That was Tessa silently crying out to her. The one she loved was me.
“Why would you tear apart two people who clearly love each other.”
That was Tessa accusing fate. Accusing the unfairness of heaven. Accusing Riley Summers’s interference. Accusing everything that stood between them.
She thinks we are “two people who love each other.”
Every word of the lyrics became a burning brand, searing itself deep into Seraphina’s heart. Her powerful ability to convince herself reached a height it had never reached before, and the flames called tender care and possessiveness began to grow and burn wildly inside her.
Tessa was completely immersed in the emotions of the song.
Her slightly parted, full red lips. Her long, pale neck trembling faintly as she sang. The breathtaking curves of her chest rising and falling with every invested breath.
All of it, in everyone’s eyes, formed a picture of ultimate temptation, yet somehow sacred and untouchable.
“…I’m still thinking of her…”
When the final note fell, carrying endless longing and resolve, Tessa had fully fallen into the song’s despair. In her beautiful amber eyes, a crystal tear finally could not hold on any longer. It slid slowly down her flawless pale cheek.
Tap.
The tear landed on the podium and shattered into a tiny splash of light.
The sound was soft, but it seemed to fall into the heart of every person in the room.
After more than ten seconds of dead silence, someone began to clap.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
Then the entire classroom erupted into thunderous applause that refused to die down.
Many emotional girls already had red eyes, deeply infected by the fierce emotion in Tessa’s singing.
Ring!
At that exact moment, the bell rang.
The applause did not stop. Instead, it grew even louder.
Tessa was still lost in the aftershock of the song and had not come back to herself. In the next second, excited classmates surged around her like a tide.
“Goddess! What’s the name of that song? Did you write it yourself? It was so good!”
“Tessa, add me on the campus chat app, please! I’m obsessed with you! I’d run into a wall for you!”
“Ahhh, my ears are pregnant! Tessa, my wife, look at me!”
Just as Tessa was about to be squeezed flat and suffocated by the enthusiastic crowd, a cool, gentle voice rang out, carrying a powerful presence that made everyone instinctively pause.
“Everyone, please make room.”
It was Seraphina.
A flawless, gentle smile rested on her face, but her eyes carried an authority that allowed no refusal. She simply stood there, and a path naturally opened for Tessa, who was trapped at the center of the crowd.
“She used a great deal of energy just now and isn’t feeling well. She needs to rest immediately.”
Seraphina walked to Tessa. Under countless gazes filled with envy, jealousy, and resentment, she naturally took Tessa’s small, cold hand, chilled from nerves, and led her out of the chaotic circle.
She did not take Tessa back to her seat.
Instead, she held her hand and led her out of the classroom, all the way to a quiet, empty stairwell.
There, Seraphina released her hand and took a silk handkerchief from her pocket. It was embroidered with gardenias and clearly expensive at a glance. With unbelievable gentleness, she wiped away the tear tracks on Tessa’s face little by little.
Her warm fingertip, whether by accident or not, brushed over Tessa’s soft lips, the same lips that had opened and closed so many times while singing.
The ambiguous touch made Tessa’s heart skip a beat.
Seraphina gazed deeply at her. In the depths of those gentle eyes, there seemed to be a surging sea. She stood very close, close enough that Tessa could clearly smell the cool gardenia scent on her.
Then Seraphina lowered her head and asked beside Tessa’s ear in a low, slightly hoarse voice that carried a startling possessiveness.
“Tessa, that song just now… who were you singing it for?”
Tessa’s scalp prickled under that gaze, as if Seraphina might swallow her whole. She shrank back uncontrollably and stammered, “I… I was just… just singing whatever came to mind…”
Oh my God. Please stop imagining things. If you keep looking at me like that, I’m going to get eaten alive right here.
Seraphina did not press further after hearing her answer.
She only looked at Tessa quietly, watching her flustered, frightened-deer eyes.
Then, suddenly, she smiled.
It was a meaningful smile, filled with overwhelming indulgence and the absolute confidence of someone who had already decided she would win.
