Chapter 37: What Remained
Claude opened his eyes a fraction. Pain hit him at once. His back felt like it had been cracked open. One hand hung useless as the bones shifted wrong under the skin.
Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap!...
Rain fell hard on his face and soaked through what was left of his clothes. He tried to push himself up but his arms gave out. He stayed on the wet ground.
"Amon," he called. The name came out rough, but no answer. He raised his voice. "Amon!"
Still nothing. In other times Amon would have stood nearby, half-smiling, ready with some comment. Scolding him to stand up Numbstick.
That presence...it was gone. The space around Claude held only rain and the bodies of the fallen angels scattered across the field. Wings lay broken. Armor was split. Swords and spears stuck out of the mud at odd angles. The air smelled of blood and ozone.
She stepped into view. Silver-purple hair that had once been dark purple. Her face looked younger than the last time he had seen it, the lines of age pulled back. It was her, she stopped a few paces away and held out her hand.
Claude looked at it and did not take it. He set his good hand against the ground and forced himself up. The movement dragged a sound out of him. He stood bent, breathing through his teeth.
"What...happened?" he asked.
Silence answered first. Then Liliana said, "It’s over."
Claude’s eyes tightened. "What do you mean?"
She did not expand. The words hung there.
"What do you mean!"
Before she could speak, a notification formed in the air in front of him. It formed in front of her as well. The same message appeared across distances that had no shared sky.
In a Mexican town, Cheering sat with a group of demigods who spoke among themselves in Spanish. The notification cut through their talk. Watching it, Cheering’s hands stayed folded. His eyes turning serious.
He stared at the glowing text
" Did i already missed the moment... The moment when i should have been present."
" Yeeesssss...." Judas cried somewhere far from any road. The notification reached him mid-sob and stopped the sound for a second.
Michael saw it in heaven and went still.
Lucifer saw it and tilted his head.
Far away, A man, pushing his long staff inside a moaning girl stopped midway,
"Babe, what happened?"
He simply pushed the woman away without explanation when the text burned into the air above the bed.
In the second world, someone sleeping against the roots of a Yggdrasil tree woke to the same light. She sat up, surprised that the guardian everyone called invincible had finally fallen.
"What is happening in the first world...?"
The message repeated through the seven human realms, the seven heavens, the seven hells, and outward until the entire structure of the universe carried the same plain statement:
[Amon the Golden Guardian has been locked.]
[The locked doors he guarded have been opened.]
Claude read it twice. The meaning settled in... Slowly. He turned from Liliana and walked toward the nearest fallen angel. The body still wore its sword. Claude slowly pulled the samurai blade free as rain ran down the steel.
Liliana called after him. "You’re free as well." He kept walking. She raised her voice. "Leave the sword, The fight is unnecessary now." Claude did not look back. He set the point of the sword against his own chest, just left of center, and drove it in.
Pain flared, then... nothing.
He opened his eyes again. Same rain. Same broken hand. Same ache in his back. Liliana stood in the same place. The notification had not yet appeared.
He was in the same time. He was exactly where he had been. He forced himself up faster, ignored her offered hand, and went for the sword again. The blade entered his heart the same way, again, Darkness took him.
He woke a third time. The sequence held. Rain. Pain. Liliana’s younger face. The silence before the notification. He understood then that he was not waking early enough.
Every death returned him to the same fixed point after the battle, never before it.
In broken rage, He turned on Liliana with the sword raised, ready to cut her down if that would change the pattern.
"It’s because of you...you, you who went against the one who saved you..."
She didn’t reply, moving first. Her hands clamped around his skull. Heat poured from her palms. Enchantments burned into the skin of his head, matching the ones that protected her own memories.
The fire sealed against tampering. At the same time the seals unlocked every barrier he had placed inside himself. Recent erasures returned first. Then older ones.
Then the layers beneath those. Every cut he had made in his own history flooded back in a single rush. He saw what he had done, what he had chosen to forget, and the reasons that no longer felt distant.
Liliana released him. "Thank me later," she said. Then she vanished.
Claude stood alone in the rain with the full weight of his restored memories and the still-open notification floating in the air.
The rain kept falling. He did not move for a long time. The sword hung loose in his good hand. Water ran down his face and mixed with whatever else was there.
Claude dropped the sword. It sank into the mud. He turned and walked away from the field without looking back.

In the space between heaven and the place Liliana kept as her own, Michael’s voice reached her through their established link. He laughed once, short and satisfied.
"Bring the locked guardian here," he said. "I can change your species if you want. To an Angel. Soul-bound. Whatever form keeps you useful. Just deliver him."
Lucifer arrived without announcement, standing in the corner of her castle like a shadow that had decided to take shape. "Hell already holds the son," he said. "The guardian comes with me."
Michael’s tone hardened. "Our deal was clear. Amon belongs to heaven, he was born here. Hell keeps what it already has."
Liliana looked between the two connections. "What... son?"
Michael answered without warmth. "None of your concern. The pact holds. So bring him to me...."
She turned her attention to the figure lying still nearby. Amon, locked and quiet, breathing but unreachable. Thoughts moved through her in order. Everything he had done. Every door he had stood in front of. The possibility that the entire pattern existed for a child he had never been told about.
Lucifer spoke again, almost casual. "Don’t worry. He never knew. Nyima carried the pregnancy without telling him. The boy was born outside his knowledge."
The words settled. Liliana did not answer either of them. She raised one hand and shattered both links at once.
The medium that carried Michael’s voice and Lucifer’s presence cracked and fell apart. The castle went silent except for the faint sound of rain against distant windows.
In the corner that Lucifer had occupied, Baal remained. He had been there the entire time, watching without speaking.
"Time to conclude our deal, missy."
