Gu Fei said coolly, "She doesn’t work at the shop anymore."

Mr. Xu’s brow furrowed. "Not working here anymore? Then where is she now?"

He shot Gu Fei a sideways glance. "I heard her parents are dead and that she’s living with you. Tell me where, and I’ll go find her."

Gu Fei smiled. "And why are you looking for her, sir?"

Mr. Xu said impatiently, "I want to ask her to her face why she refused the marriage proposal."

Gu Fei sneered, "To be a concubine, you mean. What marriage proposal?"

Mr. Xu stared at Gu Fei. "What do you mean? Don’t tell me she expects to be the main wife?"

"She’s an orphan! Making her a concubine is already doing her a great honor!"

’If she weren’t so good-looking, he wouldn’t have dignified her with this offer, much less hired a matchmaker to propose.’

Gu Fei wanted nothing more than to kick Mr. Xu out. She held back, took a deep breath, and said, "Mr. Xu, you’ve misunderstood. It’s not that she has any ideas about being a main wife. The fact is, she’s already betrothed to someone else."

Mr. Xu’s expression changed. "Don’t be ridiculous. It’s only been a few days. The last time the matchmaker came, she didn’t say anything about Lan Zhi being promised to someone!"

Gu Fei explained patiently, "The engagement just happened these past few days. The match was arranged a while ago, and we just finalized it."

Mr. Xu sneered. "Don’t try to fool me. It’s obvious Lan Zhi has feelings for me."

He glared at Gu Fei. "Lan Zhi is staying with you now. Is it your family that’s stopping her from marrying me?"

Just as he said that, who should appear at the back door but Lan Zhi herself.

Lan Zhi had a habit of walking with her head down, so she didn’t see Mr. Xu as she drew closer and closer.

Gu Fei put a hand to her forehead. It was too late to warn her; Mr. Xu had already spotted Lan Zhi.

Walking with her head down, Lan Zhi suddenly noticed a pair of black men’s boots in her path. She looked up right into the face of Mr. Xu.

Mr. Xu’s eyes lit up with delight. "So you really are here. You’ve given me quite the search."

Startled, Lan Zhi covered her face with her sleeve and immediately turned to leave.

Having finally found Lan Zhi, Mr. Xu wasn’t about to let her escape. "Miss Lan Zhi!" he called out, lunging forward to grab her.

Just as Mr. Xu was about to grab Lan Zhi, Gu Fei shot out from behind the counter, blocking his path. "Mr. Xu, show some respect."

Lan Zhi was scared out of her wits. Seeing Gu Fei block Mr. Xu, she turned and fled toward the back courtyard.

Seeing Lan Zhi lift her skirts and scurry away, about to disappear into the courtyard, Mr. Xu grew frantic. He shoved Gu Fei hard and yelled, "Get out of my way!"
