The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 49: Kira’s Kinetic Dance

"Not a god, Lyla," Ren said quietly, turning to look at his exhausted, magnificent Vanguard. "Just an equation with a structural flaw."

But as Ren watched the dark, purple fluid pooling beneath the crushed mountain of bone, his mathematically trained mind registered a catastrophic anomaly. The fluid wasn't soaking into the earth. It was actively bubbling.

The young physicist stepped to the very edge of their ten-foot-wide stone platform, peering down through the settling dust.

"Master Ren?" Elara asked, her Statistical Probability Mapping suddenly spiking with a barrage of erratic, terrifying new data points. "The ambient barometric pressure is shifting. The biological mass of the fallen Avatar is... evaporating."

"It isn't evaporating," Ren stated, his blood running cold as he pulled his quartz goggles back over his eyes. "It is sublimating. Going directly from a solid and liquid state into a gas."

Down in the ruined courtyard, the towering corpse of the Avatar hissed. Millions of gallons of the dark, purple fluid flash-boiled at room temperature. A thick, luminous violet fog erupted from the carcass, expanding outward at an alarming rate, swallowing the shattered courtyard and rolling over the fleeing beasts of the horde.

The moment the purple fog touched the retreating monsters, their panicked shrieks abruptly stopped.

The retreating horde froze in their tracks. As they inhaled the hyper-concentrated, aerosolized mutagen, their biological structures underwent a violent, instantaneous forced evolution. Their musculature audibly tore and expanded, doubling their physical mass in seconds. Thick, jagged bone-spurs erupted from their spines. Their panicked eyes shifted back into the fanatical, synchronized purple glow of the Hive-Mind.

The Avatar hadn't just been a commander. It had been a Trojan Horse—a biological dirty bomb designed to deploy a localized, hyper-dense mutagen upon its death.

The tens of thousands of beasts that had been fleeing suddenly spun around in perfect, terrifying unison. They locked their glowing eyes onto the solitary stone needle where the Vanguard stood.

"They aren't running away anymore," Lyla swallowed hard, her grip tightening on her hammer as the newly mutated, hulking monstrosities charged back toward their spire.

"The mRNA inhibitor we injected will protect us from the spores," Ren calculated rapidly, watching the toxic purple fog rise toward their elevated position. "But it will not protect us from the physical kinetic mass of fifty thousand hyper-mutated beasts. Elara, can the spire withstand a synchronized blunt-force impact of this magnitude?"

Elara didn't even need to touch the stone. Her eyes flared gold. "Negative, Master Ren. The localized density of the new horde has increased by two hundred percent. If they strike the base simultaneously, the compressive load will shatter the bedrock anchoring us. The needle will snap."

Ren looked at the tidal wave of empowered nightmares closing in on them. A physical barrier wouldn't work. Blunt force wouldn't work fast enough.

"Then we do not use physical force," Ren said, turning to the thirteen-year-old fox-kin. "Kira. We need to ionize the atmosphere. We need a localized dielectric breakdown."

Kira had just finished catching her breath. Her silver fur was still flat, her energy reserves heavily depleted from sending the lethal voltage into the Avatar's spine. But at Ren's command, she stood up perfectly straight, her amber eyes locking onto his.

"I'm out of juice, Master Ren," Kira admitted, her ears drooping slightly in frustration. "I can run, but I don't have enough static charge left to fry fifty thousand beasts."

"I don't want you to fry them, Kira. I want you to tag them," Ren explained, his hands moving rapidly as he sketched an electrical diagram in the dust on the stone platform. "The dielectric breakdown of air—the point at which standard air becomes conductive to electricity—requires an immense electric field. Approximately volts per meter."

Ren looked out at the charging horde.

"But if you bridge the gaps with conductive material, the required voltage drops exponentially," Ren smiled, a dangerous, brilliant light in his dark eyes. "I want you to drop into the horde. Do not use your daggers. Use your superconducting nervous system to plant a microscopic, localized static charge onto the fur and scales of every single beast in that courtyard. Turn them into walking capacitors."

Kira’s ears perked up, her mind grasping the physics. "I make them hold the charge for me?"

"Exactly," Ren nodded. "Spread the voltage. Build a massive, invisible grid of static nodes. Once the circuit is complete, you return here, and we release the master spark. The electricity will forcefully jump from beast to beast, seeking the path of least resistance, chaining through the entire horde."

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Kira grinned, her fangs gleaming. She stepped to the edge of the eighty-nine-degree slope.

She didn't ignite her plasma tunnel; she needed to conserve her mana. Instead, she engaged her pure, physical Agility.

Kira dove off the towering stone needle, entering a terrifying freefall toward the sea of monsters below. A split second before impact, she angled her boots, hitting the slick, frictionless slope of the pyramid's base and gracefully translating her downward momentum into explosive lateral velocity.

She hit the horde like a silver pinball.

She didn't swing her blades. She simply ran. She became a blinding streak of silver darting through the mass of hyper-mutated beasts. Every time her boots, her hands, or her swishing tail grazed a monster, she deposited a tiny, invisible parcel of electrostatic mana onto their biological armor.

Tag. Tag. Tag.

She wove through snapping jaws, slid under sweeping claws, and vaulted over the backs of towering dire-bears. She was untouchable, her reflexes perfectly synced to her zero-latency nervous system. She was moving at Mach 1.5, leaving a trail of highly charged, completely oblivious monsters in her wake.

"She is establishing the grid," Elara reported from the top of the spire, watching the invisible matrix of electrical nodes map out in her probability vision. "Coverage is at forty percent. Sixty percent. Eighty percent."

Down in the courtyard, the beasts ignored the tiny static shocks. They were blindly focused on the stone spire, rushing forward to crush it. They piled against the base, their massive, mutated claws digging into the bedrock, preparing to push.

"Coverage at one hundred percent!" Elara shouted. "Grid is primed!"

"Kira, extract!" Ren yelled into the acoustic tube.

Down in the sea of monsters, Kira kicked off the snout of a massive arachnid, launching herself straight up the sheer, vertical face of Elara's stone needle. She ran vertically up the rock face, defying gravity purely through supersonic momentum, and vaulted over the edge, landing heavily on the platform beside Ren.

She collapsed onto her knees, panting, completely drained. "Grid... planted... Master Ren."

"Flawless," Ren praised, stepping to the edge of the platform and looking down at the fifty thousand beasts writhing at the base of their spire.

He didn't have Kira's Mythic-tier electrical generation. But he had a fourteen-year-old boy's mana capacity and a physicist's understanding of voltage.

Ren held out his right hand, pointing his index finger down at the horde.

To trigger the cascade, I only need to overcome the initial resistance of the air between my finger and the first node, Ren calculated.

He channeled his mana, condensing it entirely into a single, high-voltage spark at the tip of his finger. The air snapped and popped as the electrical potential difference spiked.

"Dielectric breakdown achieved," Ren whispered.

He released the spark.

A single, thin bolt of blue lightning shot down from the spire, striking the nearest dire-wolf Kira had tagged.

The effect was instantaneous and globally catastrophic to the horde.

The dire-wolf’s body couldn't contain the charge. The electricity violently sought the nearest path to ground, but the ground was covered in highly conductive, static-charged monsters. The bolt of lightning leapt from the wolf to the beast next to it, then to the next, and the next.

It wasn't a single strike. It was a self-sustaining, geometric explosion of chained electricity.

A blinding, inescapable web of pure blue lightning ripped through the Valerius courtyard. The air screamed as millions of volts cascaded through the localized capacitors Kira had planted. The sheer thermal energy of the arcing electricity instantly ignited the volatile, purple mutagenic fog hovering over the beasts, flash-burning the toxic spores out of the atmosphere in a brilliant violet flash.

The hyper-mutated monsters didn't even have time to shriek. The massive electrical current bypassed their thick, newly formed bone armor and surged directly through their hearts and nervous systems, instantly short-circuiting their biological functions.

From the top of the spire, Ren, Elara, Kira, and Lyla watched as a localized, ground-level lightning storm completely engulfed the estate.

It lasted for three agonizing, blinding seconds.

Then, the lightning snapped out of existence.

The deafening roar of the horde was gone. The only sound remaining was the gentle, crackling sizzle of fifty thousand scorched, lifeless bodies collapsing simultaneously into the dirt.

The Valerius courtyard was utterly silent, carpeted in a thick layer of smoking, electrocuted monsters.

Kira looked over the edge of the platform, her jaw hanging open. She looked at her hands, then up at Ren. "I... I did that?"

"We did that, Kira," Ren corrected, offering her a tired but fiercely proud smile. "Your speed, my voltage, and the inescapable laws of conductivity."

Elara let out a long, shaky breath, her golden eyes fading back to their warm brown as her mapping software finally powered down to rest. "The immediate perimeter is clear. The mutagenic fog has been thermally neutralized. Structural integrity of the spire is stable."

Ren pulled his carbon-stone pocket watch from his vest. The tiny gears hummed flawlessly.

"The Vanguard Swarm is destroyed. The Avatar is dead. The atmospheric spores are burned," Ren stated, clicking the watch shut. He looked out over the smoldering ruins of the courtyard toward the blackened, silent edge of the Dark Woods.

For a moment, he allowed himself to believe the mathematics had finally balanced in their favor.

But as the young scientist scanned the horizon, a new, distinct vibration echoed through the soles of his boots. It wasn't the frantic, chaotic scrambling of a biological horde. It was a slow, rhythmic, impossibly heavy thud.

THUD... THUD... THUD...

"Master Ren," Lyla said, her deep voice unusually tight. The massive cow-kin was staring into the smoke at the edge of the forest, her incredible physical strength instinctively recognizing a kinetic output that rivaled her own. "Something else is coming. And it isn't running."

Ren’s eyes narrowed, his physicist mind instantly calculating the mass required to generate seismic waves of that amplitude from a walking pace.

"The Hive-Mind doesn't just breed flesh, Lyla," Ren said coldly, watching massive, perfectly geometric silhouettes emerge from the smoke. "It breeds armor. Prepare the pneumatic press protocols. It is time for the heavy siege."
