The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 39: The Aerodynamics of a Lightning Fox

BOOM.

The massive, ear-shattering crack of displaced air echoed across the Valerius courtyard, rattling the reinforced glass of the manor windows. A localized shockwave ripped through the grass, tearing the blades from their roots and launching a cloud of topsoil into the air.

Inside the manor, Elara sighed, carefully re-aligning a silver candlestick that had vibrated exactly two millimeters off its geometric center.

Outside, Kira skidded to a halt, her boots tearing deep trenches into the dirt. At thirteen years old, the fox-kin was taller, her athletic build perfectly suited for her Mythic-class speed. She wore her black, non-Newtonian combat suit, and the midnight blue ribbon Ren had woven for her was tied securely in her silver hair.

She looked back at the ruined courtyard, her amber eyes filled with frustration.

Ren sat on the edge of the stone fountain, his slate tablet in hand. He was fully recovered from his burnout a few months prior, his mind sharp and focused.

"Velocity: Mach 1.1," Ren read from the slate, looking up. "A respectable speed, Kira. However, your acoustic wake is catastrophic. You just shattered three terracotta pots and gave Martha a mild heart palpitation in the kitchen."

Kira’s ears drooped flat against her head. "I know, Master Ren. I'm sorry. But if I try to go faster, the air feels... hard. Like I'm running into a solid wall of water. And when I push through it, I explode."

Ren stood up, brushing off his white coat. He walked over to the epicenter of the destroyed grass.

"You are experiencing the Prandtl-Glauert singularity," Ren explained, his physicist persona slipping into its comfortable, academic cadence. "As you approach the speed of sound, the air molecules in front of you cannot get out of the way fast enough. They compress. They form a localized wall of high-pressure density."

Ren drew a diagram in the dirt with a stick. He drew a stick figure of Kira, surrounded by tightly packed semi-circles representing sound waves.

"When you exceed the speed of sound—roughly seven hundred and sixty miles per hour—you outrun your own pressure waves," Ren lectured, pointing to the drawing. "The waves combine into a single, massive shockwave. A sonic boom. The formula for aerodynamic drag is [F_D]=1/2 ρv^2 [C_D] A "

Ren tapped the variable.

"Because velocity is squared, the air resistance increases exponentially," Ren continued. "Your physical muscles are strong enough to push through it, Kira. But your kinetic energy is violently transferring into the environment. If the Hive-Mind returns, you cannot be a stealth assassin if every step you take sounds like a cannon firing."

Kira kicked the dirt miserably. "So I’m just... stuck? I can't get any faster without breaking the barony?"

"Standard biological units are stuck," Ren smiled, a dangerous, brilliant gleam in his dark eyes. "But you are not standard. You are a bio-electrical generator. We are going to use plasma physics to completely bypass atmospheric friction."

Kira perked up, her silver tail swishing. "Plasma physics?"

"Plasma is the fourth state of matter," Ren said, gesturing to the midnight blue ribbon in her hair. "Right now, your ribbon safely dissipates your excess static charge. But what if, instead of bleeding it backward, you focus it forward?"

Ren walked back to the stone fountain and picked up a heavy, solid iron spear used by the guards.

"If you project a highly concentrated, high-voltage electromagnetic cone directly in front of your body as you run," Ren explained, tossing the spear into the air, "the electricity will violently strip the electrons from the air molecules ahead of you."

He caught the spear.

"You will ionize the air, turning it into plasma," Ren stated. "Plasma reacts to magnetic fields. Your bio-magnetic aura will physically repel the superheated plasma outward, creating a microscopic, frictionless vacuum tunnel. You won't be running through the air anymore, Kira. You will be running inside a frictionless void of your own creation."

Kira’s amber eyes widened to the size of dinner plates. "A lightning tunnel..."

"Exactly," Ren nodded. "No air resistance means no aerodynamic drag. No drag means no sonic boom. You will break the sound barrier in absolute silence."

Kira looked at her hands. The thought of running faster than she ever had, without the painful, crushing pressure of the sound barrier, was intoxicating.

"Okay," Kira breathed, her expression hardening into absolute focus. "How do I do it?"

Ren walked over and tapped the center of her forehead. "Do not fight the air. Command it. Push your mana into your nervous system, visualize the cone, and run."

Kira nodded. She walked to the far end of the courtyard, giving herself a hundred yards of runway.

She dropped into a low sprinter's stance.

She closed her eyes. For the last thirteen years, she had relied on her physical muscles. Now, she tapped into the raw, Mythic-tier magic pooling in her core. She didn't let the electricity wildly spark off her fur. She forced it to obey.

Visualize the cone, Kira commanded herself.

A sharp, high-pitched whine began to emanate from her body. It wasn't the sound of friction; it was the sound of highly concentrated voltage. A brilliant, blinding blue light began to pool directly in front of her nose, forming a glowing, translucent cone of pure electromagnetic energy.

The air around the cone began to ripple and distort, turning a faint, violet hue as the oxygen molecules were violently ionized into plasma.

Ren watched, his high Intelligence stat reading the staggering energy output.

Kira opened her eyes. They weren't just amber anymore; they were glowing with a terrifying, luminescent blue lightning.

Kira vanished.

There was no sonic boom. There was no cloud of dust. There was no crater in the dirt.

There was only a localized flash of violet light, and the completely silent, instantaneous displacement of space.

Kira didn't just break Mach 1. Without the crushing limitation of aerodynamic drag, her Mythic-class muscles operated at their true maximum capacity.

Mach 1.5. Mach 2.0. Mach 2.4.

She was a silent, violet ghost. She ran a massive, mile-long arc around the entire perimeter of the estate, carving a frictionless path through the air. The only evidence she had moved was a faint, lingering smell of ozone and the gentle rustle of leaves as the displaced air slowly rushed back in to fill the vacuum tunnel she left behind.

In exactly one-point-eight seconds, she reappeared directly in front of Ren, skidding to a completely silent halt.

But she looked different.

The intense, sustained bio-electrical output had forced her Mythic class to undergo a biological evolution. Her silver hair now had permanent, brilliant streaks of midnight blue running through it. Her fox ears were slightly longer, more aerodynamic, and her magnificent tail sparked with a faint, ever-present, harmless blue aura.

A system prompt—an invisible notification that only those with World-Class magical potential could feel—echoed in her soul.

Kira stood there, panting lightly, looking down at her hands. The air around her was shimmering. She felt incredibly light. She felt invincible.

She looked up at Ren.

"I didn't make a sound," Kira whispered, her voice trembling with awe.

"You achieved Mach 2.4," Ren praised, an incredibly proud smile spreading across his face. "You are now officially faster than a royal crossbow bolt, and twice as deadly. Flawless execution, Kira."

Kira’s heart soared. The intense, overwhelming affection she held for her master flared brilliantly.

Without thinking, she launched herself at him.

At Mach 2.4, a standard human would have been violently pulverized by the impact of a hugging projectile. But Kira’s non-Newtonian suit absorbed her own kinetic output, and her micro-kinetic control allowed her to shed all of her forward momentum in a fraction of a millisecond.

She hit Ren with the exact force of a gentle, affectionate breeze, wrapping her arms around his neck and lifting him completely off his feet, spinning him in a joyful circle.

"I did it! I did it, Master Ren!" Kira laughed, nuzzling her face against his cheek.

"You did, Kira. Put me down, please, I am getting dizzy," Ren laughed, gently patting her back.

Kira set him down, though she kept her arms securely wrapped around his waist, beaming with pure, unadulterated happiness.

From the manor steps, Elara and Lyla watched the display.

Lyla was holding a massive tray of fresh bread, a wide smile on her face. "Kira looks so pretty with the blue hair! I want to learn how to do that!"

"Unless you wish to physically ionize yourself, Lyla, I suggest you stick to kinetic mass," Elara noted dryly.

Elara’s Statistical Probability Mapping was actively tracking Kira’s new top speed. The Head Maid felt a deep, profound sense of satisfaction. With Lyla’s impenetrable defense, Kira’s supersonic stealth, and Ren’s absolute genius, the Vanguard was becoming exactly what it was meant to be.

Let the Crown send their spies, Elara thought coldly, adjusting her pristine white apron. Let the Hive-Mind breed its monsters. They have absolutely no idea what is waiting for them in the borderlands
